Jersey City Mayor and Hudson County Democratic Chairman Jerramiah Healy and Assemblyman/Union City Mayor Brian Stack have agreed upon a peace treaty that seems to unite a party that was deeply divided just a few months ago.
Healy went to Union City yesterday for a one-on-one meeting with Stack, who won the Democratic State Senate nomination in the 33rd district with 75% of the vote against a candidate backed by the HCDO. Healy, who didn't want war in the first place, and Stack have agreed to avoid contested primaries in June 2008.
That means freshman Congressman Albio Sires can seek re-election with the support of both Healy and Stack, making him the strong favorite to win re-election to a second term.
Healy will support the re-election of two Hudson County Freeholders who are aligned with Stack: Maurice Fitzgibbons of Hoboken and Tilo Rivas of Union City. Jose Munoz, who won the Democratic Freeholder primary for an unexpired term running on Stack's line this year (and is certain to win the General Election) will also enjoy HCDO support next year.
The deal means that Healy won't have to help fund an expensive primary in 2008, allowing him to keep his warchest for his 2009 re-election campaign. Specifically not included in the deal was a Special Election for Hoboken City Council next month between Christopher Campos and Dawn Zimmer. Zimmer had ousted Campos by a handful of votes last May, but by mutual consent amidst a series of irregularities, a Superior Court Judge ruled that the election should be done over. Campos is allied with Stack, and Zimmer has annoyed some HCDO insiders in recent months.

I'm sorry Sal..
Proof that money and power really can force a political make up.

boo!
peace treaties are no fun.
civil wars in Hudson County are fun.
Interesting news
Smart move on Stack's part. Considering his hundreds of thousands of debt from the primary, his faction could ill-afford to finance another bruising primary.
If Healy got Sacco to go along with this plan, it further solidifies Healy's influence over the HCDO and promises an easy reelection in 09.
Maurice Fitzgibbons and Chris Campos can't really be called Stack guys post-treaty, since they are pretty friendly with the HCDO and Healy camps as well.
Why the heck
doesn't the Political Insider have this in the Jersey Journal yet? I didn't realize how Wally was so far ahead of him.
Does this mean that Brian is
Does this mean that Brian is going to support Barack Obama as the majority of the machine is? If Obama wins Hudson, that could be a huge coup for him.

Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows, eh?
I wonder which one is on top?
In any event; Hudson County will be the poorer.
Let us hope and pray that the era of kleptocratic machine politics is coming to an end in NJ....and that applies to BOTH "parties".
The truth is relatively simple; we will either clean up our political/economic systems or America will become the functional equivalent of a third world country.

Where in this article does it mention Sal Vega`s name?
it doesn't but I'm sure he's
it doesn't but I'm sure he's happy that his former backers at the HCDO are supporting Brian Stack.
According to todays Jersey Journal Political Insider
If a deal is made "EVERY SINGLE INCUMBENT ELECTED OFFICIAL WOULD BE ALLOWED TO KEEP THEIR SEAT WITH OUT A CHALLENGE". It also mentions in the Insider that "No deal has been made.. Yet".
Wally edge obviously knows something that A. Torres does not know. They will most likely make peace sooner or later.... Vega chose not to run for re election as Assemblyman.. He will most likely not have a problem keeping his seat as West New York Mayor.
Lets see what Mayor Sacco has to say about all of this
Although though I am sure that Healy spoke to Sacco before this little powwow.. Senator/ Mayor Sacco has a HUGE say in what goes down.. Some even say that, behind the scenes.. He is the real boss of the HCDO.. Nothing will go down until Mayor Sacco gives his OK.
