Andrews' Deception on Iraq Continues
Once Again, Tells Public One Thing But Does Another
In a story in today's Philadelphia Inquirer, Congressman Rob Andrews said his opposition to the Iraq war began in the summer of 2004. But in November 2005 - more than a year later - Andrews was on record clearly supporting Bush's war.
But now Andrews is masking his role in the war. From today's Inquirer:
"Andrews recalled that his opposition began in the summer of 2004 when he spoke to the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce and was 'very critical' of the war."
But Andrews' claim now defies the facts. Andrews continued defending the Iraq War and parroting Bush talking points as late as November 2005, telling the Gannett News Service:
"[The Iraq War] removed a risk the country could not afford to bear. The fact of the matter is Saddam had the capability to produce biological and chemical weapons. Waiting would not have worked." ["Andrews touts moderate track record in bid for Senate," Gannett News Service, November 10, 2005, by Ledyard King.]
Rob Andrews co-authored George Bush's war resolution and helped to lead the Bush effort ensure it had the Democratic votes it needed to pass both houses of Congress. Congressman Andrews then joined the President at the White House as he signed the bill and spent year after year cheerleading the war while Senator Lautenberg was leading the fight in the Senate to bring our troops home.
As the Star Ledger explained on April 4th:
"[Andrews] began distancing himself from President Bush's war policy in the fall of 2005 as public support began to deteriorate… Andrews' shift on Iraq came as he was lobbying to be appointed to the Senate seat left vacant after Jon Corzine's election as governor."
