Poll hours set by law, but voters on line by 8 p.m. can vote
By Max Pizarro, PolitickerNJ.com ReporterThe Secretary of State cannot change the voting hours on Election Day to accommodate new voters, Department of State spokeswoman Susan Evans said in response to a request by U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-Newark).
Payne wants the polls open for an additional hour on Election Day, and this week fired off a letter to Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells making the request.
It won't happen.
"The hours are set by law, and the Secretary of State does not have the discretion to alter them," Evans said. "The law says the polls are open from 6 to 8 p.m., and anyone standing in line by 8 p.m. will be able to vote."
Evans said the department encourages people to vote during off-peak hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to avoid lines.
