MINNEAPOLIS - McCain as military protector provided the solemn motif former New York Gov. George Pataki used this morning to finally prompt a standing ovation from his New Jersey audience.
"There are no finer people in our country than those who put on the uniform for our country," said Pataki, and a pattering of hands started that grew steadily as the former governor added of McCain, "I pray he spends the next four years protecting our country."
Hitting another responsive chord in the crowd, Pataki told a story about a reporter - and there were some groans as he provided the setup - who asked him if the massive loss of oil in the Gulf as a consequence of Hurricane Gustav were not sufficient proof that America shouldn’t drill.
More groans.
"Sen. McCain knows we have to diversify," Pataki cried over the sudden upsurge of hand claps at the mention of the presidential candidate’s name. "We can’t have all our eggs in one basket!"
Introduced earlier by State Republican Chairman Tom Wilson as the man who turned New York "into the shining, golden city that it became," the former governor wound down his short speech by again hitting the warrior theme.
"Sen. McCain understands that we have to stand with our soldiers so that those who attacked us never have a chance to do it again," Pataki said.
The delegates came out of their seats.

“We will work harder and smarter to protect consumers, to preserve civil rights, to effectively regulate the alcoholic beverage industry, to ensure that the integrity of New Jersey’s casino gaming industry continues, to keep drives, passengers and pedestrians safe on our streets, to assist victims of crimes, and to remember always the importance of juvenile justice on issues affecting the state." -- Attorney General-designate Paula Dow, at her Senate confirmation hearing.

McCain Weakens Country
The first real decision he made potentially weakened our security and might put our country in danger.
His pick for a Vice-President was based , not on National security priorities, but on politics.
Should something happen to McCain, if he is elected, then Palin will step into a position that is completely over her head.
How dare McCain put us all in jeopardy by picking someone as unqualified as Palin!
I thought he had more sense but he showed his true colors.
This is too dangerous a world to have Palin a heartbeat away .
wow..
Watching liberals smear Palin's family and then basically dig John McCain's grave is funny...
And I thought Karl Rove was bad...
George who?
Does anyone even know who he is anymore? Or care?
Umm, what speech? what convention?
Between Gustav and Palin, McCain's campaign and convention took a one-two knock out punch. Ah delicious justice! Thank you God.
