Newark, NJ - The New Jersey Immigration Policy Network objects to a recent campaign flyer that was distributed in Burlington County, New Jersey in October 2007. The flyer makes an inappropriate portrayal of immigrants and perpetrates the “big lie” that immigrants are criminals or terrorists. Whatever the intention of the ad, it can fairly be described as anti-immigrant. The ad does not elicit a discussion regarding public policy, but is designed rather to draw parallels between criminal activities and immigrants.
This “big lie” (that immigrants are more likely to be engaged in criminal activity) has been continually refuted by criminologists and security experts throughout the United States. We have and will continue to request that the ad be withdrawn. The ad contains inaccurate statements, innuendos, and portrayals that do not comport with legitimate discourse. It does not forward reasoned discussion, but rather attempts to create fear and darkness. The flyer in general crosses the line from public policy discourse into rhetoric and portrayals that are “over the top.”
