CHRISTIE EMBRACES ROMNEY, CONTINUES TO SHOW
HE IS WRONG WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

(TRENTON) - Today, Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie is welcoming former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to New Jersey, openly embracing a right-wing conservative who opposes stem cell research, vowed to veto an expansion of children’s health care, and called for the removal of health care coverage mandates in Massachusetts.

“Chris Christie’s embrace of right-wing conservative Mitt Romney shows how he just doesn’t share New Jersey’s values,” Democratic State Committee Chairman Joseph Cryan said. “Like Romney, Christie supports a constitutional amendment to ban abortion, opposes lifesaving stem cell research, and would give the insurance companies free rein to drop coverage for critical procedures like mammograms and autism treatments -- the same position as the health insurance companies that have pumped over $100,000 into his campaign. He continues to show that he is extremely wrong when it matters most to New Jersey.”

Background:

Romney Called For Massachusetts To Remove Coverage Mandates. Romney wrote, “The Massachusetts plan costs the state more than expected, largely because the legislature has been unwilling to further reduce state payments to hospitals for free care. The costs should be brought in line by eliminating these payments, by requiring sustainable copremiums and by removing coverage mandates (for example, every policy is now required to include unlimited in vitro fertilization procedures).” [Romney Op-Ed, Newsweek, 5/2/09]

Romney Said A Public Option Would Lead To “Lobbyist-Inspired Coverage Mandates.” Romney wrote, “With more than 1,300 health insurance companies, a federal government insurance company isn't necessary. It would inevitably lead to massive taxpayer subsidies, to lobbyist-inspired coverage mandates and to the liberals' dream: a European-style single-payer system.” [Romney Op-Ed, USA Today, 7/30/09]
