The delegate district that is a fusion of the 28th and 29th legislative districts, and which includes Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield, Hillside, Irvington, went for Sen. Barack Obama over Sen. Hillary Clinton by a margin of 54% to 46%, according to Essex County Clerk Christopher Durkin.
But with 99% of the votes counted, Durkin also noted that the City of Newark split its delegate districts evenly between Clinton and Obama.
"Obama won in the West and the South wards, but the East and North wards held their own." said Durkin, who said a whopping 75% of elligible voters in the district voted in Tuesday's primary election.
"It makes me sad," said Newark City Council President Mildred Crump, an Obama delegate candidate. "It underscores the sense that our city is still divided."
Obama won in suburban West Orange - Senate President and former Gov. Richard Codey's town, Maplewood, Orange and in East Orange (by a 3-1 margin), the clerk added.
