The New York Times used their editorial page to call on New Jersey Republican to find a moderate to run against Frank Lautenberg for the United States Senate.
New Jersey Democrats have not lost a race for the United States Senate since 1972, when Clifford Case defeated Paul Krebs. Massachusetts also voted for their last GOP Senator that year. Only two states have a better Democratic streak: Hawaii, which has not sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate since Hiram Fong won re-election in 1970, and West Virginia, where William Chapman Revercomb won in 1952.
New Jersey has gone longer than any other state without a Republican winning a statewide election; the last GOP candidate to carry New Jersey was Christine Todd Whitman in 1997. Since that election, each of the 49 other states have elected at least one Republican statewide. If this statistic were to be limited to only races for Governor and the United States Senate, New Jersey would rank 47th -- behind Delaware (1994), Washington (1994) and West Virginia (1996).
And it's interesting to note that despite the New Jersey Democratic streak, it's been fourteen years since a Democratic incumbent won re-election.

NY Times
The New York Times doesn't have much credibility anymore with Republicans (or most people for that matter), especially their editorial page.
And whatever credibilty they have outside of Republicans they keep damaging with smear stories on John McCain and reporters asking questions on non-important topics that nobody cares about anymore.
So did the APP
That's funny, the Asbury Park press editorial page called for the same thing today.
Wouldn't Surprise Me One Bit
It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see some of these Country Club Republicans, (i.e. = RINO's), use that article and the New York Times paper as a rallying cry to find a moderate to run; like that's the winning formula:
See Forrester - 2005 and Kean, Jr. - 2006
They'd use the APP
They'd use the APP editorial, which basically says the same thing as the NY Times, except they still have credibility (and can swing elections).
Of course the ultra liberals will yell and scream about the APP "bias" and their endorsing of almost all Republicans last year..but they never mention the county races, where I think it's been at least two straight years where APP has endorsed all Democrats.
NY Times War Against Conservatives
This is just another example of the NY Times war against conservatives. Their agenda is to move the GOP towards Nelson Rockefeller and the country club set and away from the principles of Ronald Reagan. As for the APP, they have always been more Country Club than Reagan.
Rule of thumb
You can never go wrong doing the exact opposite of what newspaper editorials, and especially New York Times and Star-Ledger editorials, suggest.
Nothing scares the New York Times more than the possibility that a conservative candidate will beat Frank Lautenberg, because then their failed theory that the only kind of Republican who can win is a liberal goes out the window.
The Times knows that liberal "moderate Republicans" are weaker general election candidates than conservative Republicans. The New York Times is going to endorse Frank Lautenberg this fall, and clearly wants the weakest possible Republican candidate. This is the same reason the Times endorsed John McCain for the Republican Presidential nomination. Anyone who thinks McCain will win the Times endorsement this fall is a fool.
Something novel - NYT endorses liberals!
Why would any Republican pay any attention to a liberal newspaper from the New York City? They have been already successful in dupping conservatives around the country by publishing a story about McCain, which was interpreted as an attack on McCain. They just endorsed him for the President in NY. Talking abut loose screws at the NYT.
