Newly sworn in Senator Joe Pennacchio, (R-26), issued the following statement today in response to Governor John Corzine’s State of the State message.
“I have said it once and I will say it again New Jersey is not for sale. The Governor’s scheme to sale our toll roads is the biggest borrowing plan in state probably national history. In the name of so-called fiscal responsibility this administration is seeking to borrow more than the total existing state debt. This is wrong for New Jersey; it will slow economic growth in this state and make this state more unaffordable for middle class families and seniors.
“Possibly the worst element of this plan is the governor’s intention to create another toll road engineered to pick the pockets of Middlesex County motorists. His objective in adding tolls on route 440 is clear to fill state coffers with the hard earned dollars of working men and women throughout Central Jersey. Additionally, retailers throughout Middlesex County will face a twofold hit. As the new tolls force the costs of goods and services up throughout the County, retail customers will be less likely to cross state lines because of the tolls.
“The Governor’s massive toll hike will push cars and trucks onto already over-burdened local roads, increasing congestion, truck traffic and air pollution in our communities and ruining the quality of life in many neighborhoods.”
