In response to Governor Jon Corzine’s proposed $812 million in budget cuts which he announced today, Assemblyman Scott Rumana and Assemblyman David Russo, both R-Passaic, Bergen and Essex, issued the following statement:
“New Jersey faced an economic crisis much earlier than the Wall Street meltdown and arrival of the national recession,” stated Rumana. “It was self-inflicted by years of fiscal mismanagement, misplaced priorities and unchecked waste and abuse in state government. Now that the bottom has fallen out and very real and very painful cuts must be made, the governor is using the national recession as a scapegoat. While the recession may be exacerbating New Jersey’s fiscal mess, it not the cause. Years of chronic tax, spend and borrow policies by this governor and the ruling party is. Unfortunately, it’s our middle class families and business owners who have been and will continue to pay the price.” “In just seven years state spending has climbed by $11 billion, state debt has ballooned to more than $40 billion and New Jersey taxpayers have had to endure 103 new or increased taxes,” said Russo. “During that time, Assembly Republicans warned of the impending consequences of such irresponsible behavior and lack of leadership. It appears the day of reckoning is at hand. Had this administration heeded our warnings, we could have begun the process to of getting this state back on track to fiscal health. Instead, Governor Corzine continued to play reactive politics resulting in much pain to our middle class families and those most in need.”####
