Melonie Marano to Run for Somerset County Freeholder

Melonie Marano, a township committeewoman from Green Brook, will seek the Democratic nomination for Somerset County Freeholder. “With the all-Republican Freeholder Board imposing tax increases of 35% over the past five years, I think it’s time for Somerset County taxpayers to elect someone with a fresh fiscal perspective on county government -- an experienced public official who is not afraid to ask tough questions and insist on accountability, Marano said. “I have done so in Green Brook, and it’s working to better our community, and I’m ready to do so for Somerset County.

Elia Pelios, Chairman of the Somerset County Democratic Organization, said “Melonie understands what it takes to run, win and serve in a predominantly Republican area. She is an excellent candidate and will be an effective, independent voice on the Board of Freeholders at a time when two-party representation is urgently needed.

Marano, the first Democrat elected to the Green Brook Township Committee since 1987, is now serving her second term. She is a full-time township committeewoman with a background in accounting and sales. Since 2004, she has served on the Green Brook Environmental Commission, Cultural Heritage and Historic Preservation Committee, Flood Control Commission, and is the liaison to the municipal court. Melonie is the founder and chair of Green Brook Volunteer Day.

Among her many volunteer activities, Mrs. Marano is a long time Girl Scout leader and member of the Sierra Club, on the board of Somerset Treatment Services, Chair of the Green Brook Democratic Committee, a member of the Women’s Political Caucus and the Somerset County Federation of Democratic Women. She is a graduate of Leadership Somerset, class of 2005.
