For Republicans who think that GOP State Chairman Tom Wilson’s support of presidential candidate John McCain will not impede his bid for re-election in June, note his opposition to legislation that moves the New Jersey presidential primary up three weeks -- from February 26 to February 5. Wilson told the Star-Ledger "It's an attempt to make New Jersey more relevant, but I'm not sure we're accomplishing that. I'd rather take the risk on being relevant later."
Thirteen of the state’s 21 Republican County Chairmen have endorsed Rudy Giuliani, who has amassed a huge organizational advantage in New Jersey and maintains a big lead in independent polls. The Giuliani forces want the early primary, with the hope that their candidate can score an early primary victory. The McCain campaign, sensing that New Jersey has become a Giuliani state, would prefer a later primary -- maybe even in June.
