Holt defends 'aye' vote on healthcare reform

WEST WINDSOR - At a town hall meeting tonight in front of a crowd of supporters, detractors and agitators, U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-Hopewell Twp.) defended his decision to vote in favor of healthcare reform legislation that Saturday passed in the House by a margin of 220-215.

"The healthcare bill that passed requires standards of private employers, improves Medicare, and adds assistance healthcare coverage for almost all Americans," Holt, one of seven Democratic congressmen from New Jersey to vote in favor of the legislation, standing onstage in the Grover Middle School.

All five Republican congressmen from New Jersey voted against the bill, along with U.S. Rep. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill), the lone Democrat to cut from his party on the controversial bill.

"I'm very committed to a public option - a publicly administered government operated insurance policy - in addition to preserving an array of policies that currently exist," said Holt, who next year faces a challenge from GOP Fair Haven Mayor Mike Halfacre, who opposes a public option.

Some baseball-capped would-be unrulies tried to boo Holt down early when he said "we need healthcare reform," at which point the congressman said, "If you start blurting out like a third grader I will ask you to leave."

If half the crowd arrived with the intent to groan every time Holt uttered the words "public option," and a few scattered persons could be glimpsed mouthing the word "socialism," most of the questions from Holt's opponents came in a civil if agitated tone.

"You were one of 75 congressmen to vote for the continued funding of that organization (Acorn)," said David Hitchcock, who wanted to know why.

Holt said Congress shall not pass a bill of attainder, which he believed the amendment pulling the plug on Acorn funding was, attached to a student aid bill with the specific intent of targeting and punishing the community organizing group.

He said the evidence offered as damning in Acorn's case came off of Youtube and wasn't sufficient, in his estimation.

"We must not have in this country trial by Twitter," said Holt.

Gov't Healthcare? No Thanks!

Rush, pediatricians in your district and all over the state cannot get flu vaccines (regular and H1N1) to give to children. According my pediatrician, the NJ Dept. of Health has a computer problem that wil lset the arrival of vaccines back another 2-3 weeks beyond what they've been set back thus far.

Meanwhile there are 300 doses of vaccine in Gitmo, an isolated base filled with prisoners who will likely never be exposed to the flu.

Further, the most corrupt college or university in the state over the last decade has been the University of Medicine and Dentistry.

The gov't cannot manage a simple flu vaccine program or a medical school, so how the heck do you expect us to trust you to run the entire medical industry?

Time to clean house

Anyone that advanced Marxism by voting for the healthcare bill or cap & trade needs to removed from Congress.

Holt is offensive

Congressman Holt is living in la la land. He hasn't even had the decency to respond to correspondence sent him, and to his staff.

All I received was an email boasting how he voted for the PelosiCare bill.

Well, my answer is simple. I'm joining a taxpayers revolt and voting to throw all the bums out.

Mike Halfacre for Congress! He'll listen to the people!

11/13/09 9:21 am

yeah, Let Enron run our Healthcare industry

ignore them, Rush. you did great! the Hannity dotheads and their families deserve the health care policies they have now. It's all okay until they get a catastrophic illness and the insurance company denies coverage. Rush, you care about the families that file bankruptcy because of ill surmountable health care bills or people who don't have any coverage now. the Dems who didn't vote for the plan are not exactly profiles in courage (good luck in their statewide races). The Limbaughs that are health care disasters waiting to happen, will all soon find out what inadequate health care coverage really means. Go get em Rush!

Holt the constitutional DOLT

Where the hell does it say  in our constitution that we are going to fine and jail Americans for not accepting Marxist healthcare ?

11/13/09 10:02 am

Hamilton Junkie

You dont get it...I am a Dem but also a business owner. I am telling you we can't afford this. I have 800 people working for me and the only way I will be able to afford to pay for these benefits is by reducing salaries of employees and layoffs. It is poison for this economy.

11/13/09 10:20 am

Joe/broy and marxism nonsense

Manage a simple flu vaccine program...has it escaped you that the private sector companies that are making the h1n1 vaccine are having an equally difficult time producing the vaccine...science as you know (maybe) takes time, vaccines are not just ordered by the govt and poof they are there.

The Constitution does not impact on this, Congress has the right to pass legislation for the people, they have properly excercised their Constitutional authority. Sarah Palin's blog is not ripe constitutional scholarship.

The rather armchair analysis of Marxism that is vomited by punditry on the right is far from accurate. Marxisim is pure and simple political philosophy, while its practicle implications are obviously flawed, it is not evil. Should the voice of the people, through our representatives in congress be heard and the government respond with new national healthcare it isnt Marxist, there are any number of national government programs. Furthermore, if you have insurance or pay your bills you already pay for everyone's healthcare. This is a good bill, and a much needed reform. Healthcare should not be a benefit to those who are able to get access. Companies should not be permitted to profit on the pain and suffering of others. There are somethings that even in this nation, a capitalist nation, that should be prioritized over money and profit.

southernDem

no. you don't get it. people need health care to survive. this should not be a country of the haves and have nots. maybe you don't have anyone in your family who suffers from lack of health care. maybe you don't care. at least Obama and real Dems like Rush are trying to do something about that. Obstructionists like yourself and the Palin-pinheads are not part of the solution. you don't want single payer - fine. it will be a bigger shame if nothing gets accomplished, which I am sure you would rather have happen. enjoy the holidays smug in your church pew southernbro.

Gov't run health care working in UK

I enjoyed reading Joe's comments - but thought he might be interested in this. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/12/eveningnews/main5633412.shtml?... This is a report from last nights CBS Evening News. In the UK, there are no lines for H1N1 vaccines, and because of the "nationalization" of their health care system, the most at-risk people were the first to get the vaccine. This is because their health care system is able to identify every person and their level of risk. As a result, swine flu cases are dramatically dropping and there are less deaths in the UK than in the US. Granted, UK flu vaccine makers can make more vaccine because they are allowed to use an additive which is not used in the US. However, this is an example of where government's ability to provide good, quality care is resulting in decreased outbreaks and deaths.

SJ Blue ignorant diatribe

SJ Blue this Republic was not built on mandates. It was built on Freedom. You and your fellow democrats have distroyed the work ethic and the rugged individuality of the American Spirit. America produces NOTHING anymore except debt. You have legislated, and Litigated American Family business out of business. Call Marxism what it is, We all know for sure that it AINT THE AMERICAN WAY.

11/13/09 12:41 pm

SJ Blue

why should Americans be forced to swallow an Acorn with a nut attached. ?

11/13/09 12:52 pm

The acorn with a nut attached

is over in China saying please please buy our debt, we are sorry for being Americans. What a sorry ass of a commander ? SJ Blue and his dreamers have no time for a strong America. They believe that money grows in Chinas Paddy Fields. As to the Constitution they still believe that the  welfare clause means that they can rob from their neighbor. These idiots believe that our founding fathers believed in

WELFARE rather than the welfare of the Republic. Yes Broy, you got it right Holt is a dolt

11/13/09 1:15 pm

Tort reform first

I know my democratic friends don't like hearing this but as long as doctors play defensive medicine nothing will change. I have no problem with universal coverage but until we can pay for it we should do something that doesn't cost money but will immediately save money.

11/13/09 1:27 pm

HamiltonJunkie you still dont get it

Americans need jobs. They need them now. You cant have healthcare if we do not produce. We can't produce if we have both a president and his party telling the World that America is no longer # 1.

11/13/09 1:50 pm

How come no one wants to comment on my post?

Is it too factual and intellectual for everyone to enjoy? I guess you would rather have petty ideological battles and partake in name calling than a real discussion of the issues.

Foggy Drew

The British national health system is a disaster. Wake up. Just ask Daniel Hannon MP about this. Even Ed Koch complained that under this 2000 pages of Legalistic Jibberish he would NOT have been allowed to have the policy he has that saved his life.

Suggest that you cop on and get the facts first about European health care before you write your unqualified comments

11/13/09 5:17 pm

I'll comment, DanielDrew

I'm a physician.  To suggest "gov't run health care [is] working in the UK" because they have administrated H1N1 vaccines in a timely manner is plainly an overstatement.  The government has often--not always--done a good job to regarding epidemiology.  But you make the mistake of broadening this small, recent success TO ALL OF HEALTH CARE.  That's too much, my friend.

Instead, a more accurate statement is, "The government can do a good job to contain epidemics/pandemics.  This speaks nothing about its ability for the rest of health care."

Rice is cheap in China.  China, therefore, has a good business climate.  Right?

Health reform from the government is certainly necessary.  The AMA supports this plan, which is good to hear.  But please don't look at other countries as good examples.

Hysterical

It's funny to watch two liberals trip over each other in defending gov't healthcare.

Junkie says there are enough vaccines in England to justify socialized medicine while SJ contends that it simply takes too long to make them.

You can't have it both ways, boys.

"You and your fellow democrats have distroyed the work ethic and the rugged individuality of the American Spirit"

You're kidding right? Democrats, middle class people, traditionally blue collar workers/defenders, the Americans not rich enough to find tax loopholes, the democrats that have passed federal stimulus to keep factories moving...Republicans use deficit spending, have no problem shipping jobs overseas because their rich biddies profit...business owners and capitalist elites made this country a zero-producer it wasnt the people working the jobs that have been lost.

Joe Im not tripping over anything lets ignore the simple and glaringly obvious fact that there are 240,000,000 more people in the United States vs. the UK, but you cannot ignore the science regarding H1N1 vaccines-furthermore the vaccine itself is not at all indicative of how effective govt run healthcare is...medicare works. I honestly and sincerely urge anyone challenging my interpretation of the Constitution to actually read it, read Madison's notes, read the federalist papers, read the Fabius letters, read the anti-federalist papers...what Glenn Beck, and Bill O'Reilly say about the Constitution is so far from accurate that it borders on crazy...again, I have no idea why everyone gets so hostile on these forums.

Still on that Morgenthau quote huh? Because he is the man to remember during the Great Depression. Any objective historian will admit that FDR saved the nation from total financial and political collapse.

""We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work!"
- FDR's Treasure Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, in 1939, on 8 years of New Deal spending as an attempt to end the Great Depression."

Hey Joe,

Get your history straight. Roosevelt wasn't even inaugurated until 1933, 6 years before your reference. Besides, it ended up costing alot more government spending to end the Great Depression; an international incident known as World War Two.

"It's funny to watch two liberals trip over each other in defending gov't healthcare.

Junkie says there are enough vaccines in England to justify socialized medicine while SJ contends that it simply takes too long to make them.

You can't have it both ways, boys"

And you're trying to have it three ways. You were the one who brought up the subject and SJ pointed out the irrelevancy of it to the bigger issue.

Stick to misreading history.

"SJ Blue this Republic was

"SJ Blue this Republic was not built on mandates. It was built on Freedom."

Whose freedom? Blacks? Women? Native Americans?

This country was built on slavery, ethnic cleansing, the relegation of women to second-class citizenship, the exploitation of cheap immigrant labor, as well as high protective tariffs to benefit the capitalist class at the expense of working class consumers.

"Where the hell does it say in our constitution that we are going to fine and jail Americans for not accepting Marxist healthcare ?

The same place it says you pay penalties and go to jail for not paying taxes, exemplified by the whiskey producers of western Pennsylvania in 1798.

Congressman Holt, Give'm Hell!

There already is a National Public Option for higher education. It is called the US DOE Federal Direct Loan Program and it worked flawlessly for me. There was no perverse incentive to send my account into default. There was no $35 late fee if my payment posted at 12:01 vs 12:00. And quite frankly, I appreciated sending my payment to Uncle Sam instead of Sallie Mae.

You can espouse conservative values here all you want but I dare any of you to tell me that you'd rather take a student loan for your kids from Citibank than Direct Loan for priciples sake.
