Another strategy wouldn't have changed the outcome, he acknowledges, but Charles Wowkanech, president of the New Jersey AFL-CIO, admitted today that the 11th hour influx of big rallies inhibited the Central Labor Council's ability to lock in on GOTV in the closing days of the gubernatorial campaign.
"I don't want this to come off as negative or critical of the campaign, which did a great job, but you can't have rallies three times a week," said Wowkanech, whose coordinated labor effort registered wins at the legislative level but watched Gov. Jon Corzine get unseated by Republican challenger Chris Christie.
"Our people were working every weekend, doing labor walks," said the labor leader, reflecting on the last two weeks of the campaign wherein the Corzine camp spread out a constellation of Democratic Party luminaries including President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton, the Kennedy family, etc.
"I'm not second guessing anyone, but trying to run our program and make all these events - two and three times a week - was tough."
Wowkanech, who estimates that the AFL-CIO and its statewide affiliates put over $1.5 million into the election, doesn't blame Corzine for losing, and points to national economic conditions when assessing the impact on 35% of construction tradesmen in New Jersey who have been unemployed for the last two to three months.
"I don't think there was a disconnect between Jon Corzine and the electorate," he said. "When people are out of work they don't act the way they ordinarily act. A lot of people stayed home. It was really a pocket book issue election. No matter how strong the message was, that was the climate. That's why we started so early (with our program), but there was nothing Jon Corzine could have done.
"We gave it our best shot," Wowkanech added. "We did very well with our labor candidates - there are a lot of positives from last Tuesday. We're going to reach out to Chris Christie. My view on this is we all knew this was going to be an extremely tough race."
Corzine ran in part on his record of securing Paid Family Leave, which Wowkanech championed and helped ramrod through the halls of the Statehouse to successful passage in the legislature.
"I think initially the Paid Family Leave message resonated but for me, at the end of the day, it became pocket book issues and economic anxiety," said the AFL-CIO president. "People wanted a change. There's too much unemployment."

Two "Families" in Labor
One thing CW did not touch on was the difficulty in getting Government Worker Unions to "turn around" their membership.
For the first 5 months of this year CWA in particular demonized Corzine on a weekly basis. That took a big toll on how state workers viewed Corzine. It also took a big toll on how many State workers, who by the way had the day off, came out to work for the campaign or even vote.
There is a big disconnect between Private sector unions (Building trades) and Public sector unions.
Wowkanech is by necessity a peacemaker. But it was noted by many how the workers who have the most to win,or lose, that is the CWA State Workers, sat this election out.
Wowkanech ,or someone else, needs to call some people on the carpet and fix this rift in the House of Labor.
Team Chris Christie
We worked our full time jobs, took care of our families and worked the campaign 24/7 AND DID NOT GET PAID AND USED ARE OWN MONEY FOR GAS AND PAID FOR OUR OWN BLACKBERRYS.THE UNION GUYS DID NOT WORK AND GOT FED AND WERE DRIVEN AROUND IN VANS AND GOT PAID TO PROTEST AND STAND AROUND.YOU GUYS ARE A BUNCH OF P###@@ys
The truth about union workers
In response to GOP Mercer's comments, I'd like to clarify exactly how union members campaign on labor to labor walks. I'm a proud member of the labor movement and the way I've seen it for the past years of VOLUNTEERING for labor to labor walks, most of US work full time, take care of our families and work the campaign on our own dime, don't get paid and use our own money for gas and phone calls. These are committed labor activists that campaign for what they believe is right and don't look for handouts.
It is one thing to be proud of what you do on the basis of your beliefs. You have to question what you stand for when you stand on a heap of insults aimed at other people's beliefs and practices. Don't hate unions and union workers just because they are union workers - let's dispel the myth of the lazy union worker who doesn't lift a finger if he/she isn't paid to do it. I'd like to introduce you to thousands of New Jersey union workers who are the backbone of their community and volunteer without compensation with their own dime on their own time.
Re: Two Families
You apparently weren't at the election day walks. CWA did more this election statewide than they've ever done, and put 1500 people on the streets on election day.
Anything else you'd like to make up out of thin air?
Unions
It is high time to outlaw public unions in this state. The concept of unions was to deal with industrialization and the manufacturing titans such as Henry Ford. In the public sphere the employer is the tax payer. It is outlandish that public employees can retire in their 40's and 50's with lifetime pensions and benefits at my expense. Suburban cops in towns such as Brick, Toms River , you name it are making six figures and retiring in their 40's this must stop. The hippies called cops pigs back in the 60's I call them pigs for wholly other reason. They can retire in their 40's but no pension till 65. Same for all the other useless public employees.
unions
People like Howard Roarke who wish to outlaw unions must be a communist or a nazi, because that is what the did when they took over in Europe. Just because he couldn't pass the civil service test for police officer he hates them and calls them names. what a jerk. Union people are like anyone else. these so called labor leaders can't tell them how to vote. they think for themselves. the vote in new jersey was not anti democrat of anti labor. it was anti corzine/weinberg.
I do not wish to outlaw all
I do not wish to outlaw all unions merely public employee unions. I never wanted to be a cop as I have a BA and an advaced degree and do well enough for myself, however I should not be responsible for paying a pension to someone whose greatest risk is burning his lips on hot coffee or chipping a tooth on a stale donut for the rest of his life. Enough of the union crybabies. Get a real job and let me know if you get a pension at 43.
Gotta be Joking
If CWA put 1500 people on the street then 1400 had to be in Mercer county.
In the 20 other counties CWA was no where to be found.
This "paper tiger" was exposed and now they have ZERO friends anywhere in Trenton.
Boo-Hoo
Wowkanech made his name by threatening people and using his organization to do his bidding. He gambled big and he LOST. I too, am not against labor unions, but as they say, "hogs get fed, pigs get eaten." Labor has run up the spending on the taxpayers and now they must suffer the consequences. Christie should take notice and banish labor to the back bench.
Taken to the cleaners
The CWA may have paid that many workers on Election Day but most took their checks and went home without doing a thing.
Once again, labor made huge promises and continue to blow smoke about their influence and efforts. But they couldn't even convince their own to support the "lesser of two evils."
Christofer Walkin...
in that you?
Re: Gotta be joking
You clearly don't have the first clue about labor's operation on Election Day. You should stop talking about things you clearly don't know the first thing about.
Wow-Kanek
This is what you get when you go from Charlie Marciante to Charlie the weasel Wowkanek. Marciante was a true labor leader but knew how to balance his agenda. Wowkanek is a sleazy politician who is no different than all the CWA's leaders put together. The want the membership money for their own bloated salaries. They could care less about the worker. Outlaw unions from being involved in elections the same way Casinos and their employees can't participate. Then let's see how they justify their existence.
Re: DASHMAN
I was there! CWA had very few workers and those who were there were only worried about getting their "street pay".
OVER 60,000 CWA STATE WORKERS WERE ON A PAID HOLIDAY !!!!
Less than 1 % worked on GOTV.
GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!
Government Jobs are Costly
In my town, there are 220 employees who were paid more than $17 million last year. Average salary is about $77,000. Taxpayers are making about $35,000 and the average family in town makes about $67,000 per year. So, if you work for the municipal govt, you make more than twice the average individual's salary and more than the average family's income. Something stinks here.
Re: firstamend
So you went to one staging location for one of multiple shifts and didn't see people readily identifiable as CWA and take that to mean no CWA showed up anywhere at any time around the state.
Air tight, buddy, air tight.
what?
Dashman - keep embellishing your groups participation in a effort that was largely a failure. If you didn't get the memo yet, your guy got slaughtered.
Have fun with the new guy. You reap what you sow.
