NEWARK - The crowd spilled out onto the pavement following the rally with President Barack Obama and just in case there was any doubt about why he was in town, a TV truck broadcasting flatscreen images of Gov. Jon Corzine in action started circling the arena blasting out the message, "Corzine, Corzine, Corzine."
The crowd, of course, was still talking about Obama.
"Awesome," said Assemblywoman L. Grace Spencer (D-Newark), who was positioned on the floor in front of the stage where the president spoke at the Prudential Center said in response to a PolitickerNJ.com question. "There is a humility to him - unmistakable. It's easy to see that he worked his way up the hard way."
"I'm writing a book called 'Obama Chicks,'" said Pam Jasper, a certified pilot, wearing a hat with "Obama Chicks" printed on it in pink letters.
But with less than 40 hours to go before Election Day, the president is delivering more than inspirational presence to Newark.
In an election in which Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine and GOP challenger Chris Christie are deadlocked in most polls, the city carries its own set of mechanical challenges sufficiently troubled to warrant overlay attention from the president's political arm, which has committed over 50 street people to Corzine's cause, in addition to money, according to sources.
At the heart of the city's voter-turnout challenge stands the Central Ward, where North Ward leader Steve Adubato, Freeholder Blonnie Watson and Mayor Cory Booker are all quietly positioning candidates to take control of that vital territory but which in the interim has no established political leader.
East Ward political veteran Joe Parlavecchio, a close ally of Adubato's, said he doesn't see the North poised for embarrassment in this election owing to an ongoing investigation into the organization by the state Attorney General's Office, which indicted five workers from state Sen. Teresa Ruiz's (D-Newark) 2007 campaign.
"Maybe they're not going to be as reliant on absentee ballots (the source of the investigation), but the machine is going to be working," Parlavecchio said.
West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice was with Obama back at the beginning of Obama's 2008 presidential run. His state senator father handles the West Ward, but the younger version has worked as a surrogate for Corzine and on Election Day will be rallying voters.
He says the closeness of the race heading into the finale gives him confidence.
"We don't want to see the president embarrassed, and if it's neck and neck as most of the polls say, I feel good about that, because then it's on me," said Rice. "Then I have to be out there getting out the vote and it's something I can control, and that is a good place to be. If we don't do it, I can blame myself.
"Jon Corzine's plan of action is the same as the president's in New Jersey and that is you invest in certain things - even in tough times - that are important, like education and urban renewal," added the councilman. "The solution for the State of New Jersey is not the last eight years that got us in this position. I thought the president was right on when he said, 'Stop complaining that we're not cleaning up the mess fast enough, get a mop.'"
Every voter at the rally was going to receive a robocall reminder about Corzine.
"The rally helps," said a Newark political operative, ready to get back to the mechanical side of an equation that on Sunday afternoon was all Obama inspiration.
Garden State Equality fires new broadside at Dems Smarting over the state Senate's refusal to pass marriage equality and disillusioned at the moment with the Democratic Party majority, Garden State Equality’s 85-member Board of Directors unanimously decided against giving financial contributions to political parties and their affiliated committees. ...
“We will work harder and smarter to protect consumers, to preserve civil rights, to effectively regulate the alcoholic beverage industry, to ensure that the integrity of New Jersey’s casino gaming industry continues, to keep drives, passengers and pedestrians safe on our streets, to assist victims of crimes, and to remember always the importance of juvenile justice on issues affecting the state." -- Attorney General-designate Paula Dow, at her Senate confirmation hearing.

Obama is Acorn
""Jon Corzine's plan of action is the same as the president's in New Jersey and that is you invest in certain things..."
Well we know he is talking about "walking around money", buying votes, by sprinkling around cold hard cash. Invest? I guess no one remembers that Corzine, the Wall Street insider, got fired from Goldman Sachs. Talk about getting a "mop"
".... troubled to warrant overlay attention from the president's political arm, which has committed over 50 street people..."
Doesn't Newark have enough of it's own "street people" ? When they say "mechanical side of the equation", they are really talking about buying votes, intimidating voters and preparing lawsuits.
Get ready NJ for four more years of grabbing your ankles.
Saving Face
It is clear that the DoubleDippinDems are trying to save face for the President, not the people of New Jersey. Its the party montra that proves that the only way that they feel that they are able to win is to use the Presidents star power, not the issues or the solutions, to inflate an electorate that concedes to a hypocracy of dishonest promise and welfare mentality.
The unfortunate problem with the Presidents message is that it leaves everyone to question his leadership ability to run the country if he holds political rallys based on finger pointing and slick slang words. Change is what is needed in NJ. The same change we thought we were getting for the country. It seems like business as usual.
Only the voters who are frustrated with the rah,rah I love you forever cheers will make the difference. Don't be discouraged, change will come on November 4. Every community that is tired of the current failure in leadership will rise up and crush the giant that is only using his power of one-shot influence to win his way to success.
Where are the jobs that they promised. Where is the opportunity to save your homes. Why is the education system in shambles. There is no respect for anyone who suppress the truth in the effort to give people a reason to invest in a failing administration. Enough with Corzine and the cronies that help to keep him in power.
Go Team Christie. All the way!!!
This isn't sbout Republicans vs. Democrats...
..it's about the average tax payer vs. the current administration.
It would be great if Corzine was really investing in things like education and urban renewl. However, statistics blatantly show that children aren't doing any better in school. What Corzine is really investing in is top executives in the education sector. That's what he means by "investing in education".
Corzine has hurt the education of Blacks and Hispanics.
How? By not supporting school vouchers for the parents who kids are forced to attend failing schools. By knew jerk support for the teachers union that continually supports unqualified teachers. By not giving greater support to Charter Schools that are performing better than the public schools.Minorities would be better off giving their support to Christie who supports School vouchers and Charter Schools and will remove poor and unqualified teachers fROm the classroom.
Didn't Cousin Pookie go to the ralley????
That couch sounds pretty comfortable. Why do anything when you can just take it easy and relax!!!!
