Hours before debate, Corzine blasts Christie over mammogram mandates

Gov. Jon Corzine today in Summit with Monmouth Freeholder Amy Mallet and Lareatha Payne

SUMMIT - In a placid living room setting here, surrounded by self-described "breast cancer warriors," Gov. Jon Corzine bludgeoned Republican opponent Chris Christie on the issue of mandated mammogram coverage.

"This is a straight-forward issue, and my opponent is just wrong," Corzine told Fox News reporter Carl Cameron after convening the coffee klatch. "Many states don't require mammograms and it's a decision that favors profitability for the insurance industry over the health and welfare of women."

This shag carpet setting at the home of Jill LaDare on National Mammography Day provided a focal point for women allies to vent - and arm - the governor hours before the candidates' debate tonight at William Paterson University.

Women - some of them in tears - described their detection of breast cancer at various young ages - 19, in the case of Monmouth County Freeholder Amy Mallet. In attendance was Deborah Q. Belfatto, executive director and co-founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

In an effort to allow people to obtain cheaper healthcare packages, Christie says he wants to give residents the option of skirting state mandates requiring insurance companies to cover some procedures, including mammograms.

"I wouldn't cut from the mandated coverages," he said during his first debate with Corzine, as quoted by Gannett. "What I'm saying is that right now, we have 550,000 women in the state of New Jersey who have no insurance at all. And what I propose is to say that for those people individuals who are currently uninsured, we should get them some insurance that they can afford."

Corzine's running mate, state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck), in her debate with Monmouth COunty Sheriff Kim Guadagno said the Christie campaign's $100,000 in campaign contributions from insurance industry sources strains the credibility of his argument.

It's the "economy"

Stupid! The fact that Corzine keeps harping on this singular issue, you'd think it was a panacea for all of the state's ills. Maybe his plan is for all those unemployed New Jersey families, who can't afford their property tax bills, to start offering breast screenings in their homes.

Irony of Summit

Corzine sits in the town where he lived a lie and cheated on his longtime wife Joanne. The hypocrit acts like a friend to women? Let's hope that all NJ women remember that Jon Corzine is a manipulative, liar who will say anything and do anything based on his own selfish needs.
