Amid speculation about delays in the wake of yesterday's federal corruption bust, sources say Gov. Jon Corzine has offered the job of candidate for lieutenant governor to state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck), and that she has accepted.

The statewide Democratic Party running mates intend to proceed with an official team roll-out tomorrow, Saturday, at 2 p.m. in the Bergen Performing Arts Center.

A maverick Democrat in her Bergen County, Weinberg championed government transparency and ethics reform, and took on the powerful leader of her own party, Joseph Ferriero.  Ferriero was indicted on federal corruption charges last year and his trial is scheduled to begin in the fall.

Corzine's Republican challenger, former U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie, filed the charges against Ferriero.

As reently as yesterday, Corzine seemed prepared to pick Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Barbara Buono (D-Metuchen), but Buono's star descended after federal prosecutors arrested a multitude of elected and appointed public officials yesterday. Corzine also accepted the resignation of his Community Affairs Commissioner, Joseph Doria, whose house was seached as part of the probe.

Weinberg's long-running feud with Ferriero boosted her chances against Buono, who had ties to former Senate President and Middlesex County Democratic leader John Lynch.  Christie also prosecuted Lynch, who is finishing his sentence now in a Newark halfway house.

A 74-year-old grandmother, Weinberg was Corzine's campaign co-chair when he made his first bid for public office as a U.S. Senate candidate in 2000.  She was also an early supporter of Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Weinberg also had several key endorsements, including Newark Mayor Cory Booker, and received the blessing of the Bergen County Democratic Organization and some key party leaders who have fought with her in recent years.

She served in the State Assembly for fourteen years until her election to the Senate in 2005.  A former Teaneck Councilwoman and Assistant Bergen County Administrator, Weinberg served as Assembly Majority Conference Chair and as Chair of the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee.

Earlier this year, Weinberg revealed that she had lost her life savings - more than $1 million - as a victim to Bernard Madoff's ponzi scheme.  She had her money invested with Beverly Hills financial planner Stanley Chais, who had invested her entirely with Madoff, whom Weinberg says she had never heard of before the scandal became public.

Reality TV star Randal Pinkett was also in the running for LG,, but his candidacy faced considerable opposition from party insiders who felt he lacked the experience to run statewide.

Welcome Gov. Chrisite

I don't believe I am about to write this, but ...

Being an avid supporter of Jon Corzine, I think he is finished by picking Loretta Wienberg as his candidate for LG. She is an angry person who is not looking out for the citizens of New Jersey. If she is the candidate for LG running with the Governor, I am not voting in the is election. We will see more corruption, just wait.

Welcome speaker DeCroce

Rearranging the Deck Chairs

on the Titanic didn't save that ship either.

Congratulations Senator Loretta Weinberg!!!

No doubt it will be a tough race; but I am confident that you and Jon Corzine will prevail!!!

Congratulations also to Jon Corzine for having the wisdom to choose a real reformer to be New Jersey's first Lieutenant Governor!!!

Hearing this wonderful news makes me proud to be a Democrat!!!

Let's ROLL!!!

I guess he lost a lot of his 1st

picks yesterday ...Loretta was the last man ...er woman standing

mars969...

If you're (really) a Democrat, you should be able to tell us what you like about our party...and why you believe it should prevail over the Republican ideology.

Then, if you have a problem with Weinberg that is so overwhelming that (you claim) will cause you to sit out the election.....please share it.  Make your case.  Be specific if you can.

There's nothing "angry" about Weinberg!  LOL

She's objectively Righteous and fights for justice and against corruption.  If that agenda troubles you then it is you who should re-examine your assumptions.

Weinberg is a good and decent person who wants only the best for New Jersey; I dare say that even Chris Christie will not dare to publicly challenge that statement.

Hard

This is a tough one. My prediction is still Corzine 48%-Christie 43%. Republicans have no real ideas how to significantly lower taxes. And IF they win it is only by default. Both parties are hurt by yesterday's sting.
The bottom line is taxpayers lose.

Two reasons

1. Corzine has to compensate for a likely lower turnout in Hudson with a higher turnout in Bergen.

2. Buono is ethically challenged.

http://christiegonewild.blogspot.com/

Based on what?

What makes you think Corzine has any chance at all of winning, let alone by 5%? Both parties were hurt by yesterday's sting? Really? Every single person arrested was a Democrat, except for one. If Corzine wins, it'll be by squeaking by with a victory smaller then 1%.

The reality is that the chances of Corzine winning are incredibly slim.

Nobody wanted it

All the big names floated around and now he ends up with a party outsider. South Jersey bosses are not happy with this mess and want Corzine to step out of the race.

But Lento, are you kidding? Let's ROLL!!! ??? You can't be serious?

Corzine is not inspiring the rank and file, many who are out of work.

The only dems at this point looking foward to this are the campaign consulting firms who are going to make millions off Corzine.

Christie is in the drivers seat now. He will run a smart and winning race, no major slip ups, and staying on message.

So she had her odey slush fund...

let's see how honest she is and whether she fesses up as to how that was not the only slush fund and whether she fesses up about the Homeland Secutiy funding scandal she watched unfold without opening her mouth.

Sources: Corzine to run with Weinberg

question... Why are Corzine, Weinberg and Buono not in the forefront of this corruption investigation, if they are honest and looking out for the best interests of the citizens of New Jersey? Also known as TAXPAYERS!

Roryar

I figure there will be a very low voter turnout. People are disgusted with both political parties. Democrats do have an edge because they outnumber Republicans. And I suspect Indepedents will stay home.

Mr. Christie's LG pick doesn't help him at all and possibly even hurts him among his own party. Governor Corzine's pick most likely helps him, at least with his own party.

Finally..the right choice

As I have been saying all along, there was never any choice but Loretta...even before the s--t hit the fan. She has fought the corrupting influence of pay to play for all of her career. The Governor could not have made a better choice. Now, let's all settle down and get the job done.

PC517 Yes, Let's Roll!!!

Corzine doesn't need any "consulting firms".   If he plays that kind of rote DCCC type game, you're right...he will lose.

Corzine needs actual votes from individual people!   That means connecting with the real people of New Jersey most of whom aren't even registered and voting!   No amount of money can equal a man putting his heart and soul on the line for the people.   That's what ex marine Jon Corzine will have to do.  Pollitically "dance like no one is watching".   I know he has it in him to rise to the occasion!

Corzine will have to dig deep into his own gut and make the choice to run as a populist progressive.   What the machines think of him at this point is almost irrelevant.

Machine politics in NJ is on its way out in BOTH parties.  What happened yesterday was that the tip of an iceberg became visible.  There's much more work to be done!!!

Corzine has an opportunity here to kick some serious ass.  Christie is a target rich zone.

Christie is as much a political hack as anyone in the Ferriero BCDO ever was.

Christie bought his job with Bush by raising funds.  No pay....would have meant no play for Christie.

Christie is a fraud who tells Republicans he's conservative and pretends to be liberal when trying to appeal to Democrats.

Christie gives his ex BOSS a 52 MILLION dollar NO BID plum contract!   And has the unmitigated gall to say that he doesn't even have an "apearance problem".   Hell if that deal doesn't appear dirty on its face Peter Cammarano is innocent of all charges!

Corzine happens to be in office in the midst of a massive global/national/state recession.....it's understandable that many folks who are hurting would take a look at any opponent.

The problem for Christie is that the closer you look at him the less you like what you see!

Further, Christie is all over the lot on policy, he needs to put some flesh on the bony skeleton he calls his policies.

The man is trying to sit on a lead by pandeing and pretending to be invisible......that's a hard thing for anyone to pull off let alone Chris Christie!!!

All Corzine/Weinberg have to do to win is take off the gloves and challenge Christie head on in matters of SUBSTANCE!!!   Of course Christie will try to frame it that "they're being mean to me those angwy nasty peepuhl"   and portray any substantive fact based challenge or questioning of his record or his lack of any really thought out spelled out policies as "attacks".

Christie is a bag of hot air that will be eventually be deflated.

But PC517, I do have to say you are right about the consultants....they tend to be (on all sides) greedy purveyors of the "popular wisdumb".   They sure as hell didn't help John McCain much eh?

the tired face of tired old failed Liberalism

Jewish Liberal ticket with an Anti Freedom agenda.
One must look at the economic and social disaster in Teaneck ( cops being laid off ) in Weinbergs home town and ask how many more Rabbis with Gucci bags , Body Parts and envelopes of cash does it take for them to totally distroy the state of NJ ?

too old

at 74 I think she is way to old and tired we shouldn't be resurrecting politicians of the past.

Who is this old bag?

Loretta Weinberg? Never heard of her? Am I supposed to care?

Who submitted this photo?

The up-the-chin shot is not  typically a flattering for jowly old men.

No seriously

Who is this dude Weinberg? House band for Conan?

LOVE IT!!! Thanks for the humor!!! We all will need to be laughing during this election. Funny though isn't, that the sting happened the day before the Weinberg announcement?! Now, that's funny - sad- but funny.
