TRENTON - Presenting him as an emblem of youth, GOP gubernatorial nominee Chris Christie today unveiled 37-year old freshman Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) as his recommendation to the Republican State Committee to be the party's next state chairman.
"It's time for the party to have a generational turn," said Christie, standing at a Statehouse podium with state Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean (R-Westfield) and Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce (R-Parsippany), hours before a private Christie fundraiser headlined by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who Webber backed for president in 2008.
"Jay is one of the leading young leaders in our party," said Christie. "I like his instincts. Symbols are important in politics. ...I appreciate Jay's support since February, and he has played a key role in terms of being a surrogate for me. I have a great deal of faith and trust in him. He exemplifies the principles we believe in in the party."
The party committee is scheduled to formally embrace Webber next week.
A Ronald Reagan conservative who put the exclamation point on Christie's formal declaration of his gubernatorial candidacy - and broke some hearts in the camp of movement conservative Steve Lonegan - when he likened Christie's leadership mold to Reagan, Webber said he was humbled and honored by Christie's backing to succeed Chairman Tom Wilson.
Heading off press questions about yet another white male at the top of his party's heap who in this case comes from a legislative district home to 242 registered African-American voters of 133,013 total registereds, Webber cracked that for "balance," Christie selected someone with ballpark tickets on the opposite side of the field from where Christie sits.
"Thanks for balancing this out," said Webber, a Harvard-educated attorney and family man who drubbed moderate Larry Casha of Montville in their 2007 primary encounter.
"He ran a tenacious campaign, a great campaign," Casha said today in a phone interview. "If he can be as tenacious on the Democrats, he'll do just fine. I think Jay's going to do a fine job."
Kean and DeCroce placed their own indivdual imprimaturs on the selection and so did Chair of the GOP Chairs state Sen. Kevin O'Toole (R-Cedar Grove), who applauded the Webber choice in a phone message.
Christie quibbled with the suggestion that the pro-lifer gives the vanquished Lonegan crowd a consolation prize on the eve of Christie's selecting what many insiders anticipate will be a pro-choice candidate for lieutenant governor like state Sen. Diane Allen (R-Burlington) or Bergen County Clerk Kathe Donovan and an inevitable deflation for Lonegan and company, who want a full-fledged conservative LG.
"I never felt constricted (to pick a conservative to counterbalance a moderate LG choice)," Christie said. "I get to pick who I want. I will pick a person who is ready to be governor on day one if something were to happen to me."
At least two Christie backers read Webber as the right kind of conservative Republican to satisfy Loneganites.
"Jay Webber will help bring in Lonegan supporters so we can be united to win in November," said Assemblyman Gary Chiusano (R-Franklin).
"He's a real big follower of the principles of Ronald Reagan, which I like," said state Sen. Steve Oroho (R-Franklin).
Democratic State Committee Chairman Joe Cryan, who tonight is expected to easily win another two-year term as his party's state chairman, said only of Webber, "I wish him good luck."
Moments before the Christie-Webber presser, Lonegan campaign strategist Rick Shaftan in a phone interview reiterated Lonegan's LG argument, which Webber's selection does nothing to change, Shaftan insisted.
"He (Christie) needs to pick a conservative," Shaftan said.

Really Rick?
Since when has the"strategist" for the losing campaign told the winning campaign what they needed to do? Someone remind Mountaintop, that while he raked in the majority of the fees in the primary, he didn't rake in the majority of the votes. Christie's selection of Webber is a great one on many levels. Webber's conservative credentials can only be doubted by those still bitter over his endorsement of Christie.
Webber, like Christie, is a great family man---a nice contrast to their peers on the other side of the aisle. Webber's Ivy League education and thoughtful approach will also be a great contrast to the harshness and vulgarity of the Democratic Leader. With his first critical selection, Christie hit a home-run. And he did it without ANY help from the losing strategist....go figure.

must be jumping for joy!
A terrific choice
Jay is bright, articulate, conservative and ethical to a fault. A terrific choice for the face of the Republican Party in New Jersey. As a matter of fact he'd be almost perfect, if he wasn't a Mets fan... Tom Buckley
Why would someone who went
Why would someone who went with Romney and Christie please Lonegan supporters? That does not make sense. It has nothing to do with being bitter or angray, it is just not logical.
I don't know this guy but it sounds like he was promised this position in exchange for supporting Christie rather than an ideological agreement. If that is the case it is another guy who chose to sell out. That would make him a professional politician and not a Republican. People like that do not have any ideology other than getting elected. I won't vote for people like that anymore because even if they say something I agree with they cannot be trusted to follow through. For example, I don't believe anything Corzine or Christie says. I believe most states have done away with the Chairman structure since the claim is that it does not lead to fair primary elections.
Russ--wake up--Lonegan supports Christie
I just cam from a fundraiser at the PNC Arts Center which featured---Chris Christie, Mitt Romney, Jay Webber & STEVE LONEGAN. At the event Steve Lonegan gave a great speech about the campaign, unifying the party, beating Jon Corzine and how much he supports Chris Christie.
You and a sad few, are the only ones holding out. Goodbye and good riddance. Thank you Steve Lonegan for your support and a great speech.
Ethical to a fault?
And he's a professional pol in New Jersey? Those are two contradictory concepts. Ask Christie's brother, or Corzine's girlfriend. Or McGreevy. Or Defrancesco. Or Menendez. Or Torricelli. Or.....
A Ronald Reagan Conservative?
I don’t know all of 37-year-old Jay Webber's politics, but can we get real for a minute here? First of all, anybody who was 9 or 10 when Reagan came to office in 1980 and was still several years too young to vote to reelect Ronnie in 1984 cannot, by any logic, be described as "A Ronald Reagan Conservative.” As for why Webber came out so strong for Christie back in February, RussOCNJ’s point that it “sounds like he was promised this position in exchange for supporting Christie rather than an ideological agreement” strikes me as spot on. A don’t begrude a young ambitious Republican the chance to engage in that sort of political horsetrading. Still, I’d be curious to know if, and how much, Christie’s brother Todd donated to Webber’s contested assembly run in this year’s primary. Perhaps the reporter of this story should be researching the possible quid pro quos of this pick of Webber by Christie. That would certainly be more journalistically fair than what we have here, which is a reporter acting as Webber’s personal publicist by giving him birthright to the legacy of Reagan.

"I don't know this guy but it sounds like he was promised this position in exchange for supporting Christie rather than an ideological agreement. If that is the case it is another guy who chose to sell out."
So what was Lonegan promised in exchange for supporting Christie and appearing with him at a fundraiser? Maybe Webber "sold out" for the same reasons Lonegan "sold out".
"Still, I’d be curious to know if, and how much, Christie’s brother Todd donated to Webber’s contested assembly run in this year’s primary."
What contest? Shaftan conned some poor nebbish to collect enough signatures to get on the ballot and annoy Alex DeCroce. He had no money and made a fool of himself. There was no contest as the final results showed.
Christie's stock just went up!!!
Now Webber's first job is to convince Christie that he needs a conservative LG.
If he wants a female on his ticket let him pick Gina Diorio.

Is the video of Lonegan's speech posted anywhere?
Simply because I voted for
Simply because I voted for Lonegan does not mean I will follow anything he says or does. If Lonegan fully endorses Christie it still does not mean I will vote for Christie. I won't vote for anyone I don't believe.
Some of the political people on here lose sight of this as they play their political games. This happens to almost all people who get involved in the political system over an exteded period. they completely lose sight of what they are there to do. This is evident from the large number of nonsense posts and stories on this site by people who have been involved over an extended period.
Case do you really want the GOP to win in Nov???
"So what was Lonegan promised in exchange for supporting Christie and appearing with him at a fundraiser? Maybe Webber "sold out" for the same reasons Lonegan "sold out". "
You don't seem to believe anything is legit.
After all the Christie support we read from you for months, are you know questioning Christie's ethics??
Why does a united NJ GOP party cause you trouble?
One would wonder "who" or "what" you support after that post.
Again, nothing wrong with Webber doing a bit of quid pro...
...as I said, but which Clifford Case seemed incapable of hearing. The real beef I have here is with the story's reporter, who seemed to be shilling for Webber as a "Ronald Reagan Republican," even though Webber wasn't old enough to pack his own lunch for school when Reagan took power. It's pretty common knowledge by now that in recent years Christie's brother Todd has made $400K+ in donations that padded the campaign war chests of state Republican office holders (who then, conveniently, turned around and supported Chris's run for governor). Again, this is the way politics-as-usual usually works. Which is why I was curious to know if that’s what may have happened here. It’s also why I’m a bit disturbed that an overly fawning reporter covering this “presser” didn’t think to ask Webber the simple but tough question: Did Chris or his brother Todd ever donate money to your election fund? Journalism ain't rocket science, but it does demand a spine.

Good - you won't vote and are leaving the state. Leave already. The party and state will be better off. be a man and stick to your words.
the oc - You said you going
the oc - You said you going to make up the differnce for the taxes I pay and the commerce I crerate by running my business here. Please make deposits to Seth Grossman's escrow account. I figure I pay close to $2K per month in NJ taxes when I all up the state, local, sales, and tolls. A $600K deposit to cover the next 15-20 years should be sufficient.
Right now I am looking at Outer Banks or Topsail Beach in NC. Have any more suggestions?
CliffordCase=Marcus?
I have seen several posts on here claiming CliffordCase is actuall a Mr. Marcus who runs The Marcus Group. I just called there and left a messasge for Mr. Marcus asking if would verify one way or the other. It will be interesting to see if he calls back.

"After all the Christie support we read from you for months, are you know questioning Christie's ethics??"
Just to clarify I was responding to a Lonegan supporter questioning why Webber would endorse Christie in the primary unless he "sold out" (in quotation marks) for the GOP chairmanship. I simply made the point to this Lonegan supporter that his hero endorsed Christie as well, and if he accuses Webber of "selling out" (in quotation marks) he might just as well accuse his hero of "selling out" as well.
"One would wonder "who" or "what" you support after that post."
I'm a RINO who will vote for the man not the party. I'm satisfied with all three candidates (Christie, Corzine and Daggett) so I probably won't make up my mind until November.

It will be interesting to see if he calls the cops or gets a court order to have you committed.
I guess you have nothing to do since the primary and Christie's been avoiding your company. It's summer at the shore so why don't you get together with Jessie Kurtz and Seth Grossman, put on your bathing suits and Lonegan T-shirts, and go stalk some hapless female bennies at the beach?
Bennies in South Jersey? It
Bennies in South Jersey? It is Shoobies down here. Are you even from NJ?
You are correct though, the Lonegan t-shirts really attract the babes. What happens when you wear a Christie t-shirt ... oh yeah, I forgot, you need to stay anonymous because you won't stand behind your beliefs...err ... I mean because you don't have any beliefs to stand behind.

insider attacks continue
"gorednj" simply continues to give himself away by his personal attacks at Lonegan staff and personnel. (What is the deal with your utter hatred of Rick Shafton? How obvious can you be?) You are only serving to disqualify yourself as any real voice in these arguments. We have every right to question the credentials of Jay Webber and anyone else who uses the "conservative" term loosely, marginally and selectively. You know, like Christie -- BEFORE the primary campaign. You're right, true conservatives get VERY harsh when we get lied to once too many times. You, on the other hand, seem to be quite "harsh and bitter" about your own personal gripes with some people.

No offense, but your perceived "curiosity" seems a little strange. If Christy or his brother did give money to Webber's assembly run, isn't that a good thing? It's called strengthening your party.
