With GOP establishment insiders hardly in panic mode but alert now – very alert - to the gubernatorial candidacy of former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, the movement conservative today promised if elected to deconstruct Trenton and restore local control.
“Corzine and (GOP frontrunner Chris) Christie say the same thing – that local elected officials have to be more responsible and people have to take more of an aggressive role at the local level,” said the candidate. “But the fact is that the mayor of North Arlington and the mayor of Absecon will tell you the same thing: they step up to the plate every year to try to make cuts when they’re mandated by Trenton to spend more. The governor tells them to comply more with mandates – and to cut more. They spend more time trying to conform to state mandates than they do governing. The difference between Chris Christie and me is he’ll reconstruct Trenton, and I intend to deconstruct it and maintain only core programs.”
On his way to Galloway where he intends to open a South Jersey headquarters tomorrow after an evening of campaign events, Lonegan held a teleconference call with reporters in an effort to drive the message of his economic plan, and in the process ramped up the rhetoric in the process, calling the state teachers’ union the “most powerful cartel in the state.”
Broken down into slogans, his plan consists of the following: imposing a flat tax and eliminating the progressive income tax, ending the corporate income tax, deregulating and ending state mandates like the state Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) and scrapping the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), restoring local control, introducing school vouchers and breaking the unions’ grip on arbitration.
“My plan does not rely on phony rebate programs,” he said. “My plan in short is free market capitalism and free market principles. All these small towns come under attack because it’s the politically expedient thing to do, but our small towns have been the backbone of the state’s economy. People like their small towns, that’s why they moved there. Mine is a decentralization model - both in government and business. I’ve said it before, my approach is not unlike the one employed by McDonald’s, in which 80% of their stores individually owned and operated.
“I will reestablish the control of mayors and councilmen,” Lonegan added.
Restoring local control is the cornerstone, he said.
“I have an awful lot of confidence in local communities to develop their own towns,” said Lonegan, when asked how a state is populous as New Jersey could withstand the environmental impact of massive deregulation. “If people want to develop, they should develop. If they want all farms, they should have all farms. My point is this central government plan is the reason people are leaving their communities.”
Lonegan also objected to the supposition that New Jersey is overpopulated.
“Two-thirds of the state remains undeveloped,” he said. “I am not an advocate of Smart Growth. My whole point is development should be determined by the voters.”
In an ongoing radio, Lonegan’s campaign refers to Christie’s “new scandals,” and today Lonegan reaffirmed his belief that the front running former U.S. Attorney has not adequately addressed his appointment of former U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of New York David Kelley to a federal monitoring job.
Christie has repeatedly argued that he confronted and stared down the issue at a press conference last month.
Garden State Equality fires new broadside at Dems Smarting over the state Senate's refusal to pass marriage equality and disillusioned at the moment with the Democratic Party majority, Garden State Equality’s 85-member Board of Directors unanimously decided against giving financial contributions to political parties and their affiliated committees. ...
“We will work harder and smarter to protect consumers, to preserve civil rights, to effectively regulate the alcoholic beverage industry, to ensure that the integrity of New Jersey’s casino gaming industry continues, to keep drives, passengers and pedestrians safe on our streets, to assist victims of crimes, and to remember always the importance of juvenile justice on issues affecting the state." -- Attorney General-designate Paula Dow, at her Senate confirmation hearing.

Lonegan and Christie
As much as I think Christie has a better chance against Corzine than Lonegan statewide, I am pretty sure Christie is too dumb on economics to understand anything of what Lonegan is proposing.
Christie is an empty suit, but the best chance of beating Corzine because of his Obama-like campaign.
Where is the $$$$$ coming from?
Endless radio spots...tons of negative mailers, calls, fundraising letters/mailings, Joe the plumbers appearance fee......and now a South Jersey Headquarters....why doesn't someone ask Lonegan where his money is coming from? The money that he is showing ELEC doesn't jive with what he's spending. Maybe Rick "worry about the lawyer stuff after the election" Shaftan is doing some major fudging with ELEC laws.....someone should take a closer look.
Same here
I'm glad someone else has seen the similarities between the Christie campaign and the Obama campaign.
No substance, plenty of fluff and say the least amount of things possible.
Smart Capitalism
How can anyone object to Lonegan's plan? Local control is where it's at; that was the intention of the Founding Fathers.
There's a reason that Pennsylvania's budget is lower than NJ's despite 43% greater population and 7 times the land mass: NJ State government is TOO BIG!
"We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work!"
- FDR's Treasure Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, in 1939, on 8 years of New Deal spending as an attempt to end the Great Depression.
Lonegan knows how to run a tight ship
gorednj,
What you don't understand is that Lonegan doesn't need the high priced frills that Christie has. He doesn't need hundreds of advisors. His army of volunteers are more than happy to do things that Christie's people insist on being paid for. Lonegan doesn't need to pay for loyalty or support.
Steve Lonegan was able to keep Bogota's budget relatively flat and significantly below the inflation rate during his 12 years as Mayor. During that time NJ's budget more than doubled. This clearly shows that Lonegan is the right man to become our next Governor. With the money problems that New Jersey has, only Lonegan has shown that he knows how to manage a budget efficiently and effectively.
What's wrong with the hair?
It looks like Looneygan's hairpiece got twisted. Maybe the wind blew it backwards.
I've seen dead fish look more attractive than these losers.
Christie and Karrow have nothing to worry about.
"What you don't understand
"What you don't understand is that Lonegan doesn't need the high priced frills that Christie has. He doesn't need hundreds of advisors. His army of volunteers are more than happy to do things that Christie's people insist on being paid for. Lonegan doesn't need to pay for loyalty or support."
Unfortunately extremists tend to be more loyal and devoted to their causes, partly because their lives are so empty they need to compensate for their feelings of inadequacy by projecting themselves on something more important than they are.
I agree Christie needs to watch his overhead expenses and make sure his campaign doesn't become any more top heavy than his own ample girth. His support is ten miles wide and ten millimeters deep, which means he'll need resources for a heavy advertising blitz before June 2 to wrap this thing up and put Looneygan away for good.
DiMarco
maybe if you were not so busy constantly being brown noser one to Lonegan you will look around and realize he aint gonna win PERIOD!
He needs us GOP to get him across IF he wins in June and that is not going to happen!
Christie put out a great piece today finally GOING AFTER Lonegan's bogus Republican News. Great pic of all of lonegans pieces being put into a trash can!
Lonegan is too busy trying to weasel his way into a position he is clearly not qualified for and every day people we know are clearly now supporting Christie.
We also know many soft dems that will ONLY back Christie and NOT Lonegan because they feel he is too conservative and not in touch with the mainstream as you clearly think he is.
NO WORK AGAIN TODAY?
"Unfortunately extremists tend to be more loyal and devoted to their causes, partly because their lives are so empty they need to compensate for their feelings of inadequacy by projecting themselves on something more important than they are."
Wow Case, you really described yourself well in taht post.
As I have said before
Lonegan is mainstream.
You can believe what you wish. I am sure no words from me will change your opinion. While it is welcome, and I would certainly hope that the GOP rallies around his candidacy, the organization that he is amassing should be sufficient to achieve victory in November. After seeing what this august body did eight years ago to the previous conservative candidate running for Governor, he knew he could not count on their support to win the general election.
Lonegan's Mindless Plan to Expand Government
Lonegan's plan to extend the income tax and increase the income tax on the middle class is something that Fascists and Socialists would love. Proposing to increase the income tax on on 70% of New Jersey voters is doing the dirty work than not even the Democrats want to do. It really is a stupid idea to propose in a Republican primary.
If by some unfortunate miracle Lonegan wins the primary, Corzine will rip Lonegan's ass out on this issue. Extending the income tax is way more against limited government priciples than selling off government run highways. When you put the increase income taxes on seniors and the middle class idea together with socialist government run government paid for highways, Corzine starts looking a lot better than Lonegan on limited government principles.
Lonegan's plan to increase income taxes shows that his anti-pay for using the Turnpike posturing was just that, political posturing.
Some Lonegan supporters are freinds of mine. One of the Lonegan supporter "types" are males pullling in about $50,000 or so per year who care mainly about abortion and secondarily about civil unions. When I tell them Lonegan is the only candidate in the race that will increase income taxes on them, they will switch to Christie.
Other Lonegan "types" are the anti-Hispanic bigot type and the law and order type, that will go ballistic when Christie or Corzine finally let them know that Lonegan hypocriticallt employed illegal aliens to put together campaign signs in his garage. The law and order types will not like it when they understand that Lonegan hypocritically tried to turn his being caught red-handed with illegals in his garage into a chance to bash the NJ Fraternal Order of Police.
Lonegan needs to become transparent.
Stevie, release your tax returns. Christie did. Corzine did. Merkt did. What are you hiding.
Release the names of all your campaign donors. Christie did. What is Stevie hdiding.
The Dan Gallic story is just the latest of dozens of similar stories. A "conservative" who does not acutally know Lonegan, may get attracted to him. But very very few people, liberal or conservative, like Lonegan after they have actually had to deal with him in person.
And then Brian Levine claims Lonegan's camp lied to him over the petition signature brouhaha. Levine learns three lessons there: 1) you do need to get all the signatures on the petition in order, 2) you have to have a normal campaign manager (unlike Pastor Wright) and 3) Lonegan has been called a liar (rightfully so in my opinion).
Flat Tax
Everyone should have recently done their taxes. I suggest a simple calculation to see if the Flat Tax helps or harms you. I think most in the middle class will find that they will actually come out ahead when they use the Flat Tax instead of the current progressive income tax.
When coupled with the expected reductions to 2.1% and the increased business activity that will result, everyone, regardless of circumstance should benefit from Steve Lonegan's Flat Tax plan.
50 citizens heard Lonegan at Smithville at 3:30 PM today.
Seth Grossman, www.libertyandprosperity.org
He got a standing ovation as soon as he stood up to speak. Then, at 5:30 PM, Lonegan went to a factory near Egg Harbor City where roughly 50 to 60 people had come to meet him. Most of them wrote out checks and handed them to him as soon as he finished speaking. Steve Lonegan then went to a real estate office in Ocean City which was packed with about 50 to 60 people, and again most people wrote out checks when he finished speaking. Three Ocean City council members publicly got up to endorse Lonegan. The folks at all three events looked like ordinary, well-adjusted, and well informed citizens. Most of them are successful business and professional people and respected as community leaders. The way I see it, this was a typical day for the Steve Lonegan campaign.
You would think the leaders of the Republican party in New Jersey would want the support of people like us. But instead they insult us by attacking Lonegan for supporting the basic principles of the Republican party. Is Chris Christie drawing this kind of support when he travels around the state?
i find it interesting that
i find it interesting that most of those who attack steve lonegan don't mention the issues. i would prefer the flat tax or fair tax to the current socialist progressive income tax system advocated by Marx in his Communist Manifesto.
"Those who would trade our freedom for the soup kitchen of the welfare state have told us they have a utopian solution of peace without victory. They call their policy accommodation. And they say if we'll only avoid any direct confrontation with the enemy, he'll forget his evil ways and learn to love us."

WOW
50 or 60 people?
OH well, there goes the primary lolol
say it with me
70% of New Jerseyans will see their taxes raised under Lonegan's plan.
If you don't make great money, prepare to have your taxes hiked, middle-class people making 40-60k a year, prepare to have higher taxes. That's fairness apparently.
Like everything else...
Like everything else associated with this foolish campaign...they stretch the truth. They "stretch the truth" on Christie's pro-life position--When asked when he meets with groups why he says Christie is Pro Choice when he is PRO LIFE Lonegan says it's "just politics"--we say its LYING and DISTORTING !!! They "stretch the truth" about how little they follow Election Laws----we know that if ELEC actually enforced the laws Steve would have been out of this race a month ago. Lying about Americans For Prosperity, Lying about how many $ 1 bills he mailed out to get the 3 for 1 match illegally, lying( as he did in 2005) about what his campaign is spending, all these things make Lonegan a hypocrite of the worst kind.
As own campaign consultant has said---"we win elections first, worry about the legal issues after." So, they quote the founders of our country out of one side of their mouths, and show no regard for the laws of this country out of the other. Steve should be careful---if this race has tightened, then the press will actually stop treating him like the "crazy Uncle" next door. They will begin to do their research into his record, into how he accumulated the properties he owns, into the people around him. It's easier to be irresponsible when no one takes you seriously---
Lonegan's Campaign Lied
“In the beginning, I took it to heart when the Lonegan campaign challenged my signatures,” he said, “but it’s been going on for a couple of weeks now and I’ve had time to get some distance on the situation. I did feel that I had a rapport with the Lonegan campaign. The campaign did lie to me and told me they didn’t know what was going on, when it turned out they did know (that a paid ally had challenged Levine’s petition signatures).” -- Brian Levine
Lonegan is a liar. Period.
Dig up the documentary movie Anytown, USA he is called a liar there. He campaign newspaper lied about his Bogota mayoral opponents made up pledge to "increase taxes" in the same kind of phony newspaper that he is using in this primary.
In a sworn certified legal statement in January and (maybe February also) of 2007 Lonegan called a councilman the Chief of Police -- when he had to know darn well that the councilman was just a civilian and that there had been and still is a Chief of Police in Bogota.
Lonegan was a "consultant" in North Arlington, where he had enemies of the Shaftan's mayoral candidate laid off from the town pay roll.
Also Lonegan has a potty mouth. In the movie Anytown, USA he lets the F-bomb fly fast and furious. Hypocritical family values guy.
In a certified legal statement a Bogota police officer claims that a developer told the officer that Lonegan would get the zoning changed on a Bogota building in exchange for $3,000 of funds (government matched by another $6,000) given to his 2005 campaign. My opinion is that Lonegan is a lying crook. The Christie still has a few weeks to let the public know who Steve Lonegan really is.
Stevie, release your tax returns and your campaign donors names. Other candidates have. What are you hiding?
Economic realities
The Tax Foundation has rated NJ as being dead last of the 50 states in having a climate that is hospitable for attracting and retaining business. The reason for this is abundantly evident---confiscatory tax rates and layer upon layer of onerous anti-business regulations. Only Steve Lonegan has a plan to reduce business and personal taxes and eliminate the regulations that are causing businesses to flee the state. Moreover, it is no longer supportable for 10% of our citizens to pay 70% of the taxes. Lonegan's plan is the only fair one and will result in restored economic health for all.
My flat tax plan will start
My flat tax plan will start with a flat tax rate of 2.9% on every dollar earned. The rate will decrease to 2.5% the following year, and further to 2.1% in the third year. Moreover, the rate will only be changed thereafter by a super majority of the state legislature.
http://lonegan.com/The_Flat_Income_Tax.aspx
How this plan is "unfair" is beyond me.
Lonegan Increasing Taxes!!!
Steve Lonegan wants to increase income taxes on the vast majority of New Jesey citizens.
Nobody that I have seen on this site is complaining about the plan to cut the income tax on high earners. The only problem we have is increasing taxes on the low earners.
The solution is to cut the income tax rate for everybody, and fund it by reducing spending. Cut governement sponsorship of gubernatorial campaigns for starters. Then stop the Christmas tree spending that Coniglio was convicted on.
Lonegan's idea to increase income taxes makes no sense, especially given the fact that his plan to increase taxes on most New Jerseyans will hurt them more than the plan to increase tolls on the Turnpike would have.
Lonegan's tax plan
Lonegan's tax plan will not raise taxes on the vast majority of New Jerseyans. Please take Di Marco's suggestion and compare what you are paying under our present confiscatory tax rates and what you would pay under Lonegan's 2.9% (further reducing to 2.1%) flat tax. You are almost certain to come out ahead. In addition, a flat tax puts all the citixens of our state on an equal taxpaying footing. Of course, the higher earners will continue to contribute larger dollar amounts since 2.9% of 150k is a lot more than 2.9% of 40k. Other than eliminating the state income tax altogether, which I would certainly support, but which is just not realistic at this time, a flat tax at a relatively low rate is the most fair solution. And, yes, I'll say it before you do: there will be some people who have paid zero income taxes over the years who will have to ante up a small percentage of their income to the state from which they receive a large portion of the services. But this does not CREATE an inequity, it REMEDIES an inequity.
LOOK OUT-HIGHER PROPERTY TAX
Simple Math, Lonegans flat tax lowers income tax for most, increases school funding for suburban schools and lowers property tax to boot. CC plan will have the same impact as whitmans cut in income tax, choke off munipal funding, increasing property tax.
Former Christie Supporter
why and how did you change to Lonegan. ? Please tell us that it was because of Crazy Clifford Case
Decided not to just follow the herd.
CC should be commended for his work as US att, which is how he got my attention, but when I heard about Lonegan I started too pay attention to his ideas. His policies are well thought out and are like a laser beam directly pointed at the problem, He can explain beyond the first sound bite how and why he wants to implement his policies. Christie is somewhat lacking in details. I also believe the NJ republican party is following this candidate like sheep. Perhaps a few debates could set the record straight on both sides.

Wow. 50 or 60 people here, 50 or 60 people there, and pretty soon you're talking about real people.
At this rate Looneygan will have just enough votes to win the primary by November.
Cliff
Cliff, you'd be lucky to have 5 people at your funeral.

WTF is up with that toupee?

Looks like a future Lonegan supporter!

Flat Tax
Under a modified flat tax all New Jersey income earners will pay something. That something will be a very fair proportionate amount. The less you make the less you pay. If a taxpayer earns 40,000 and the flat tax rate is 2.1% the State Income Tax would be $804.00 or $15.46 per week. Now the question is this: Do you believe that all working citizens should pay their fair share for the government services they consume or should a much smaller group of more prosperous citizens sbsidize the rest of the population ? This is the crux of the issue. All NJ residents benefit from services the government provides should not all pay some part of their earning for this benefit or should other people pay their way for them ? The bloated size of the government bugget is another issue and not relevant to the above question.
A lot of the posters on this board are bloodsuckers. They seek the blood of their follow citizens. They are receiving their sustenance from the taxes paid by other New Jersey taxpayers. They live off the blood, sweat, tears, hardwork, risks, ingenuity, ideas and perserverance of other New Jersey individuals and families. Every hour that a taxpayer spends working to pay income taxes that support some other resident is an hour stolen from that taxpayer. Yet many of the posters here revel in that concept. They are criminals living in a corrupt society. Thay are supporters of ever growing government, ever growing taxes, wealth transfer and spreading the wealth. They're really true blooded Socialists.
That is not to say that the society should not support certain individuals who are incapable of supporting themselves, a just society takes care of its own. A just society does not enslave its own.
What's wrong with New Jerseyans?
New Jerseyans are the highest taxed citizens in the U.S.A. yet New Jerseyans keep electing leaders who continue to spend more and tax more. Are you proponents of self sacrifice? Are you workaholics who enjoy supporting strangers and criminals? Are you insane? Some of the wannabe pundits on this site are so childish moronic and simplistic that they frighten their fellow citizens who realize that these nincompoops may actually vote. Some of the discussions and comments about various candidates' physical attributes is very illuminating and reveals the level of intellect of the "political sophisticates of New Jersey" at PolitickerNJ.
Please stop the personal attacks on Christie
The guy is an Obama-Corzine style income redistributionist. We don't need to talk about his physical characteristics. The Christie people are attacking Steve personally because they can't attack his record or what he stands for, other than to parrot the same kind of attacks Corzine will use in November.
The good news is that the Christie campaign has started a debate on the question of whether our state's economic policy should be one of economic growth and opportunity as Lonegan suggests, or income redistribution and big government, which is the Obama-Corzine-Christie agenda. This is the same debate we will have in the Fall. The Lonegan campaign welcomes Christie's negative attack ads as a way to bring this to the forefront and we thank them for responding to us in this manner.
and
my photo was in responce to an attack on Lonegans hair.
any photos poking fun at lonegan will be met 10 fold by me as evidenced above. so lower your guns you are far outmatched. That took me 3 minutes to do. I could have albums of these things 3 days from now, but i use my powers primarily for good.

disclaimer: this photo is not real.. but it is true
We appreciate the support.
But he's an Obama-Corzine style "spread the wealth" kind of guy. That's the issue that will shape both the primary and the general: whether state government's philosophy should be "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."
That's what Christie's "tax plan" is all about.
25 for Lonegan at Atco Diner, May 1, at 10 AM.
Seth Grossman, www.libertyandprosperity.org
That was after 20 -30 people at Gary's Restaurant in Pleasantville at 8AM, , and 35-40 people at opening of South Jersey campaign headquarters at 9AM. There were roughly 50-60 at Silver Lake Diner in Haddon Township at 11:15 A.M. At the end of Steve's speech, one of the waitresses bought Steve Lonegan's book, asked for a sign, and signed up to volunteer. Then, Steve Lonegan headed north for a series of other events.
For those who laugh at this number of ordinary people showing up on a regular basis, at inconvenient times and places on short notice, I ask how many events is Chris Christie is having every day, and how many people are showing up to meet him on a regular basis? I know there was a Corzine-style "Town Hall Meeting" for Christie at Cape May Court House on April 17. Has Christie been south of Garden State Milepost #83 since? If so, when, and how many people turned out to see him? These little meetings produced the people who gathered 11,000 petition signatures for Lonegan during the six weeks before April 7. Let's see how many votes they get him on June 2.

When Looneygan is elected President of the United States will he donate his rug to the Smithsonian?
