Peterson: Lincoln and Reagan

CLINTON – Reveling in his rep as a “tight-fisted” politician, Hunterdon County Freeholder Erik Peterson stands onstage now, having accepted the nomination of Hampton Mayor Rob Walton.

“What would Abraham Lincoln think today to witness the condition of our state and our nation?” Peterson asks the crowd. “We have witnessed ever expanding state spending, and borrowing. Ladies and gentlemen, this must end!”

As freeholder, he opposed a clubhouse at the golf course on principle, and backed a proposal to increase services for veterans of the armed forces.

“As the last great president to fully embody the principles of our party, Ronald Reagan reminded us (there are simple solutions to problems),” Peterson proclaims.

With that in mind, he wants more business friendly tax cuts. He wants to cut COAH.

“This state and this nation, under God, can have a new birth of freedom,” Peterson declares.

Oh Please

That is the worst campaign speech ever cobbled together. It was like he didnt expect he was going to make it. Blah Blah Blah Lincoln blah blah blah Reagan....For the record Lincoln was a proponent of increased federal power and Reagan was an antagonist of it....Lincoln and Reagan shouldnt be mentioned in the same breath

SJ is right . . . well, almost

Erik Peterson is (or was) the Hunterdon County Freeholder Director. He did, in fact, oppose the proposed golf course clubhouse on principle (that principle being that government should be limited to certain, basic functions like police, courts of justice and maybe the fire department). Of course, he's right on principle, even if he's off on history and economic analysis.

Reagan was really a traditional democrat with a long history of favoring more government in reality even as he was famous for rhetorical flourishes against big government. His actions never quite matched his fine words.

Lincoln, on the other hand, was always a proponent of big, centralized and unlimited national (not federal) government in the tradition of Alex Hamilton and Henry Clay. All three man were in favor of the British merchantilist model, with high protective tariffs, a national bank, and public internal work projects. A primitive form of economic fascism.

Artful speecifying does not a great statesperson make. Lincoln, the Great Prevaricator was a fabulous speechifier . . . a classic case in point. Erik doesn't make grand speeches, he just stands up for the right ideas and policies. Which most likely means that Boobus NewJerseyus will NEVER allow him to advance in NJ governance.
