In a statement issued Wednesday morning, GOP gubernatorial candidate Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt (R-Mendham) called on Republican State Committee Chairman Tom Wilson to resign his post immediately “in the best interests of the party.”
“After years of failure, it is time for the New Jersey State GOP to change horses and look to new leadership if it wants to succeed in 2009,” said Merkt. “Wilson has overseen a series of dismal state campaigns, reducing the Republican party to essential irrelevance in New Jersey state politics.”
Merkt called Wilson’s handling of the U.S. Senate Primary a “fiasco,” in which the establishment juggled one candidate after another before running with former U.S. Rep. Dick Zimmer, and getting soundly beaten by U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-Cliffside Park). In particular, the party’s selection of political neophyte and food heir Andy Unanue, whose short-lived candidacy dissolved in jarring headlines about his party boy past, galled Merkt.
“The Unanue episode provides a sad verdict on Tom Wilson’s lack of judgment,” said the long-shot GOP gubernatorial candidate. “It was pitifully obvious that he never vetted his recruit’s background, which is an inexcusable blunder by a state party chairman. Moreover, things only got worse, as Wilson’s next choice got creamed by what should have been a vulnerable opponent.”
Merkt made it clear he stands with fellow Morris County legislator, state Sen. Joseph Pennacchio (R-Morris), who last week also urged Wilson to quit as party chairman.
“The sad part is that, under Tom Wilson’s management, the New Jersey State Republican Party has continued to make the same mistakes over and over again, all the while hoping for a different outcome,” said Merkt. “As Einstein once observed, ‘that’s just plain crazy.’”

Tom Wilson is too thick
to take the hint.
Busy Making a Buck
for himself and family and not the State GOP Party - win or lose it seemed he made out - his ties to the Bridge Commission issue should have seen his removal.
Go away Mr. Wilson
Just go away. When you come into a room do people run or pretend to be in heavy conversation? That's a clue my dear. Just go away, blame it, like they all do, on wanting to spend more time with the family....
When I asked
him back in the Spring about why the party hadn't coalesced around Pennacchio or Sabrin he danced around it.
Not that I was surprised. Get him out now.
Maybe because
Pennachio and Sabrin were disasters waiting to happen and Zimmer at least had the promise of not being one? Anyone here wanna bet me that Merkt ends up with a lower percentage than either Sabrin or Pennachio?
Republikyle..
Sabrin was a crazy joke who ran the worst campaign ever..
Jersey Joe was a back-bencher who would have lost to Lautenberg by 20%. He was unimpressive and had my vote almost the entire campaign until the near end when I saw him in the debate and realized why he's a back-bencher in a safe Republican district.
Given the obama wave, zimmer did exactly what he was supposed to do and few republicans will admit that the real reason for his candidancy was to keep the damage to a minimum. I'd say he did that and helped Lance in the process.
Nobody was touching Lautenberg..why do you think not one higher profile R didn't go for the seat. It was a lost cause in a strong Dem year.
Because they all have
this defeatist mentality. We win when we stick to principles, something our party here in NJ has sorely lacked for some time...
Einstein's definition of insanity ya know?
The NJGOP
has never been about principles or values. It has been concerned about holding what it has and saying that we are not Democrats.
Bitaryo
we are making a habit of this, but I have to again question your comment. Firstly, what party does not try to hold onto what it has? That is what a party does, and beyond holding onto what they have, they then try to expand upon it further. Secondly, Republicans are not Democrats, thus it is important that they must demonstrate how they are different; offering voters clear differences from which they can choose. So, I am not sure what point you are trying to make. I also find it difficult to understand what you are saying about the NJGOP not being about principles, which seems to infer that the Democrats are about principles ... which is perplexing considering the corruption that is so apparent state-wide within the Democrat party.
Motown
All the party does is hold on to what it has. In rough districts, they make a token attempt in order to force the Dems to spend money without any hope of making a dent into the majority.
I can encapsulize your second question in Dick Zimmer's early stump speech by him saying that he "was not Frank Lautenberg". My heart dropped and realized that we were dead in the water.
I don't believe that either party has any values. They are organizations run for their members and no one else.
Tom Wilson has abandoned Republicans in the urban areas. Yes, they can't win locally. The issue is that one needs them to turn out in County and Statewide elections. They don't because of this alienation.
Lastly, the religious conservative GOP faction with their self-appointed title of Real Republicans is a drag. The general electorate could care less about the 2nd Amendment, gay rights and abortion. Taxes and the economy are the issues and not which god is the real one. And even reasonable candidates have to cater to these yahoos in the primaries with cute tricks by saying that the above issues should be US constitutional amendments. Nobody buys these as realistic and offend everybody's sensibilities.
Tom Wilson
Rick,
For the good of the party please drop out of the race for Governor now. You have never sttod for party unity and will not change now. You have no name recognition and will only serve to get another Democrat into office. For the sake of the party please drop out so someone who could win for us has the opportunity.
By the way Tom does the best he can. It was a very hard year for republicans in NJ period.
