Franklin Township Mayor Brian D. Levine, who has won twice in a heavily Democratic town, is thinking about seeking the 2009 GOP gubernatorial nomination

Franklin mayor considers bid for governor

Franklin Township Mayor Brian D. Levine today confirmed that he is mulling a run for governor.

“I have been contemplating such a thing,” he told PolitickerNJ.com. “Of course, you need money and organization, but I’ve had some successes here in Franklin and my background is in finance. I think that’s what we’re needing now.”

Currently serving his second term in this Somerset County town of 60,000 residents, Levine became mayor in a 2003 upset election. A Republican in a town where registered Democrats have the numbers, he put an exclamation point on his local victory when he won re-election in 2007.

“Money and fundraising are considerations, but no one should be turned away by the money factor,” said the CPA mayor who ran his first race for mayor with $30,000 against $150,000.

“If I were going to do it, I’d have to make a quick decision,” he added of a gubernatorial run.

Most likely before the New Year.

Already running to secure the Republican nomination next year for governor are Assemblyman Richard Merkt (R-Mendham) and former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan.  U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie and biotech millionaire John Crowley are also considering a gubernatorial bid.

Executive Experience in a town bigger than Bogota!

Go Levine!

So Lonegan Announced Already???

"Already running to secure the Republican nomination next year for governor are Assemblyman Richard Merkt (R-Mendham) and former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan"

Guess I missed it, which isn't shocking given how insignificant Lonegan is.

Who is this guy Levine?!

Everyone run for Governor!!

The GOP would get more

interest if they ran Linda Stender and probably better results.

levine

people say levine is a good mayor, so maybe he'll raise the quality of the debate.

So

One day Levine gets to tell his grandchildren that he once ran for governor and lost

Levine

I have met this guy and got a chance to talk with him at a fundraiser.

He is a very nice guy, but is center-left and would continue more of Corzine's failed policies.

Lonegan announced he was running for Governor in 2006 but he didn't tell anyone he meant for the 09 election.

Levine in '09?

It has a catchy ring to it, doesn't it?

This should be an interesting bid. From what I gather, Levine is a moderate Republican, and he would have to be to succeed in Franklin Township. Like the moderate Leonard Lance defeated the originally favored liberal Linda Stender, a moderate might be what the Republicans need to defeat liberal Governor Corzine. But the name recognition is going to be quite small, smaller even than Steve Lonegan (although being mayor of a town on 60,000 ought to be more credible than being a former mayor of a town of 8,000). As for Rick Merkt, no one knows him -- I don't know him -- and the fact that he was an early starter will not benefit his campaign.
I expect Christie or Crowley to win the primary.

Levine for Governor

I met Mayor Levine at the NJ League of Municipalities convention, and I was very impressed by him. He is exactly the type of Republican who can appeal to Democrats as well as to his own party. He's from the center of the state, which makes him better to appeal to those far-north and far-south NJ types. If the party bigwigs don't roll over and play dead for Christie, so he bulldozes his way to a nomination, why shouldn't Levine, Lonegan, Merkt, et al, have a chance to compete in a primary?
