TRENTON - They think she’s getting a bum rap early because she’s a woman, and rather than languish on the sidelines, senators Diane Allen (R-Edgewater Park) and Jennifer Beck (R-Rumson), and Assemblywoman Alison McHose-Littell (R-Franklin) made a statement today of Republican unity on behalf of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Calling themselves "Palin’s Truth Squad," the three legislators stood up for the Republican nominee for vice president, arguing that Palin’s success and home state popularity contrast sharply with that of New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine.
"Look at her public policy on spending," said Beck. "Alaska is a more self-sufficient state. In his first year as governor, Jon Corzine raised spending. (In contrast), she is taking the right steps."
The women presented their remarks at a Statehouse press conference with borderline outrage over the way the media has to this point treated their party’s number two pick.
McHose cited the "deplorable" coverage of Palin.
"For those of us who have the courage to put our name on the line, we don’t deserve unfair treatment," McHose said.
It’s not only the media, she said.
"Some of Barack Obama’s surrogates have hit below the belt," said the assemblywoman. "They’re running scared."
The legislators cited anti-Palin remarks this weekend of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and an op-ed by former union leader Carla Katz.
The Palin put-downs hit close to home for these women, particularly Allen.
Allen recalled being hired as a news director at a small radio station 40 years ago. She remembered the abrupt end to male conversation when she walked in the room; the awkwardness.
"No one knew exactly what to do with me," said Allen. "I hope we can get to the point where we can deal with the idea of a woman running for high office."
It’s the needling suggestions of inexperience that lead the women to conclude that the press and the Democrats are using code words to diffuse Palin’s candidacy on the basis of gender. Allen pointed out that Teddy Roosevelt had served as governor of New York for less than two years when the GOP tapped him as a vice presidential candidate.
"John McCain didn’t choose Sarah Palin to pander, but to shake up the status quo," said Allen. As governor, "She didn’t just talk, she cut budgetary spending."
For its part, the Obama campaign side-stepped the GOP press conference with a "no comment," and a shoulders-shrug argument that the pro-life Palin doesn’t play in New Jersey.
"Women in New Jersey have traditionally supported candidates who support a woman’s right to choose," Obama spokesman Andrew Poag said of the pro life governor.

Great to see Palin
I think it's great to see real people like Sarah Palin running for office. The Democrats run the same thing every 4 years - elitist liberal lawyers who live in ivory towers and look down on everyone. Obama? Lawyer. Clinton? Lawyer. The other Clinton? Lawyer. Biden? Lawyer. Gore? Lawyer. Kerry? Lawyer. Edwards? Lawyer. And on and on and on. Palin got into politics because she was fed up and that was the intention of our Founding Fathers - government of the people, for the people and by the people.
"I figure people drift toward liberalism at a young age, and I always hope that they change when they see how the world really is.”
- Johnny Ramone
If you believe Beck, I've got a bridge to sell you in Alaska...
Oh the horror! She's being made to answer questions on the Bush Doctrine (not some abstract theory -- a friggin' policy paper and an important one at that).
What to do?... must... find... something... wait, I know: Tina Fey is disrespectful and sexist!
Seriously, the economy is tanking. People's retirement accounts are getting cleaned out, as John McCain is saying the economy is strong and the media isn't tearing him to shreds over it... meanwhile you're holding press conferences to complain about media bias against your candidate?
Get lost, wackos.
Great to see liberals like Beck and Allen...
...praising a former small town Mayor who's pro-Life and pro-gun.
Take a lesson, Rick
Those Republican ladies did more to help elect other Republicans In their 20 minute presser than you have done in your hundreds of hours of typing away with your incessant and tiresome attacks on any Republicans who you perceive as not conservative enough. You must be one heck of a consultant if your advice is to seek ideological purity rather than coalitions. Please remind us which conservatives you have helped to win in competitive general elections.
Yeah Rick
and pass the message on to Dan gallic!
Hey slim..you're completely
Hey slim..you're completely naive if you think the economy is controlled by any government administration...past, present or future...and if you think that the liberal media has balanced its level of scrutiny and attacks on both sides, you've been watching to much of CNN or NBC.
There is a broad media conspiracy to attack Palin because she is a woman running for VP, who more than likely will represent the first woman in the Executive branch and the Dems got beat at their own game. There is more at stake here than just a Presidency --it's historical precedent..and its not the Democrats that have a monopoly on "progressive" anymore.
The media will not go quietly and let the "loathesome" Republicans take strategic advantage. The liberal media are and will always be the attack dogs for the Democrats (who can then claim that they have clean hands).
Jen Beck's move is well respected, sincere and right on the money..also political genius in the same breadth given her future aspirations.
Idiots Delight
I applaud Beck and McHose support of the the jesus-babbling lunatic from Alaska. With people like these in the Republican Party New Jersey will remain a blue state for the foreseeable future.
or Socialism at it's Best
So on a State level, I guess you support higher taxes, more tolls, more social programs, stealing tax revenue from the middle class and giving it to corrupt, crime-ridden NJ cities, additional government spending/budget increases, no gov't accountability or reform...sounds like the USSR to me..welcome to the blue state of NJ.
When do these women
take delivery of their new tanning bed?
Standing up for what?
Right to carry out personal vendettas using the public office?
Charging rape victims for rape kits used in the investigation?
Abstinence-only education?
Attempted censorship at the public library?
Creationism in science classes?
Lying about her support of the Bridge to Nowhere?
Lying about her trip to Iraq?
Lying about Alaska's energy contributions? Not really 20% is it? (More like 5%).
What a shocking headline!
What a surprise!. Republican women walking in lock step behind a Republican woman.
STOP THE PRESSES. WE HAVE A REAL SHOCKER HERE!
Katz criticizing Palin
It's an NJ classic to see an utter sleaze like Carla Katz, who tries to sleep her way to influence (great for women's issues, of course!), have the sheer chutzpah to criticize a woman like Sarah Palin. This loud mouth certainly doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut - and never will (just ask the esteemed Governor Corzine)...
Wow, way to set women back....
As a woman, I think these women are not doing anything to help the cause of women in politics. First of all, looking into Governor Palin's past record and asking her questions about it, is not sexist. If Senator McCain wants people to think she is qualified to be VP, then these are questions that need to be asked. There is nothing degrading or sexist about it. It seems that the women of the GOP feel that a woman being treated the same way any unknown male politician who was suddenly nominated as the VP, is wrong. Why shouldn't we know as much about her as possible?
As for Governor Palin's great policy on spending, that Senator Beck refers to, which is it: her requesting more money per person in the nation in federal earmarks? What about her supporting the policy that rape victims pay for their own rape kits (while she was Mayor of Wasilla)? I'm sure that saved the town thousands of dollars. Who cares about a woman who has just been through a traumatic event? Let's make sure she pays her own expenses so the perpetrator of that crime can be caught. If Jen Beck wants to stand up for women, why not stand up for them?
fedup
No evidence whatsoever has been produced to show that any rape victim was ever once required to pay a cent when the police (stupidly) billed insurance companies for those costs. But what if there was a credible, corroborated, firsthand account by a rape victim broadcast on national TV? Would there be outrage, particularly by all these liberals? Would they call for accountability? Would they denounce the person responsible in no uncertain terms? Ask Juanita Broderick.
