Six members of the New Jersey fundraising outfit formerly known as "the Group" toured the Obama mothership in Chicago on Monday and interfaced with some of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s top staffers.

Zenon Christodoulou, Al DeCotiis, Hugh DeFazio, John Graham, Bill Harla, and the Rev. Reginald Jackson spent three hours in Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Il.) main campaign headquarters, which houses the political activity of some 450 people, according to DeCotiis.

"We told them we’re going to work with our existing operations and that we intend to bring in all of the Clinton finance supporters for full impact," said DeCotiis.

In the primary, the Group personally raised $4.4 million for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), and served as the Jersey catalyst for $6 million total toward the New York senator’s presidential campaign.

Depending on which members one interviews, the hardcore Hillary heartthrobs underwent a sometimes outright resistant, sometimes tormented, sometimes difficult, and sometimes stoically resigned trudge into Obamaland after their candidate raised the white flag.

During their tour of Obama HQ on Monday, six of the core members spent about a half an hour with Obama campaign manager David Plouffe, who formerly served as the handler of Sen. Bob Torricelli (D-NJ).

"They were a first class team in hosting the Hillary Clinton New Jersey finance team which will continue to work closely with the Hillary New Jersey political team headed by Gov. Corzine, Senator Bob Menendez, Joe Cryan, Frank Pallone , Joe Roberts, and the Obama team Cory Booker, Mark Alexander, Tricia Mueller, and Jenny Yeager in helping unite the party for a November Democratic victory," Graham wrote in a mass email Tuesday.

"It was a very good meeting," concurred DeCotiis. "Obama’s people were respectful, very happy and very grateful to have our support.".

The fundraisers are committed to organizing a multimillion dollar Obama event in late September or early October; as well as a much smaller and more intimate $10,000 per-person fundraiser this Thursday.

"This election has been tightening up and New Jersey is critical as well," Graham wrote to party allies. "Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, and Michigan are toss-ups at this time. We have our work to do."

He added of Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, and senators Evan Bayh and Joe Biden of Indiana and Delaware respectively, "any of the top three VP picks are a great start in judgment by Barack." Graham said he had a gut feeling in Chicago that Obama would select Biden because of his knowledge of foreign policy.

Puzzling group.

“Zenon Christodoulou, Al DeCotiis, Hugh DeFazio, John Graham, Bill Harla, and the Rev. Reginald Jackson” is an interesting group. I am puzzled by presence of Rev. Jackson here. Isn’t he supposed to tend to his church and flock instead of jetting around collecting money for Clinton now Obama? I hope he does not make sermons that some other Rev. had in the past.

The GROUP

was the nae of a little known movie about rich spoiled girls in the early 1900's. I wonder if that's why these guys selected the name.  it sounds like a group of arrogant pwere hungry  wannabees to me.  They had better get on the Obama train-its moving like lightening.

I've never seen bigger egos.

They couldn't get Hillary arrested, but they want to be treated like political royalty when the fact remains they totally miscalculated the presidential race?

What group of fundraisers and insiders actively seek out publicity on websites?

Are these people this impressed with themselves?

Get in the back of the line. You lost.

Deal with it.

Tough Keeping Track Of The Line-up

Max,

What is this "formerly known as 'the Group'" stuff that you have now mentioned for the second time?

Is there a "new" nickname?

And, since when did Hugh DeFazio join their ranks? Seems to me this is the first time you, or anyone else, ever mentioned his name as a member of the Group. Well . . . you did mention him and a few others in a general fundraising sense here.  The others in that fundraising meeting were Herb Klein and Phil Sellinger.  Were those three -- Herb, Phil & Hugh -- all members of "the Group?"

You now cite the following six "members" of the "group formerly known as the group." Zenon Christodoulou, Al DeCotiis, Hugh DeFazio, John Graham, Bill Harla, and the Rev. Reginald Jackson.

Based on other stories you've written, that would leave out a few key players, such as Caren Turner, Meryl Frank and Michael Kempner.

What about the three of them? Did they drop out?

Now, you wrote one month ago about Caren possibly switching to McCain so I suppose that has already happened, no? After all, she did "max out" to both Hillary and Rudy Giuliani earlier this year, at least according to HuffPo.

But you also said in that piece that Michael Kempner was absolutely committed to Obama.

So, why wasn't he in this recent meeting? Or, is he now in a new group?

Exactly what is that the reason they are losing their moniker, "the Group?" Maybe it is because nobody can keep it straight who is in and who is out.

Max - PR Director for 'the Group'

The bizarre coverage of a bunch of self-promoting fundraisers by this site continues. Are there no other fundraisers in the Party? Of course there are - people who are just as effective and with far more experience. Why does Max continue to allow himself to be exploited as a promotional tool for this pod of folks - most of whom are unabashedly seeking an appointment in a federal administration run by a Democrat - ANY Democrat?? This coverage continues to be strange...

What Motivates The Group Formerly Known as The Group?

Max,

I think factstater, above, makes a very valid point.

The devotion to Hillary of these folks is obviously all under the bridge now, so the obvious question arises -- what is their motivation to suddenly become "devoted" Obama-raisers?

Next time you talk to the members of "the group formerly known as The Group," why not ask a few pointed questions, especially of John F.X. Graham, to wit:

John, you took a firm public stand, some time back, demanding that Barack Obama offer the Vice Presidency to Hillary Clinton as a condition of your participation in Obama's campaign in the fall.

As was reported at Politickernj, you specifically said the following:

"If I don’t see the respect for Hillary Clinton, I will vote for him, but will I be a proactive person? No," said John Graham, national co-chair of fund-raising for the Clinton campaign and one of the money men in that small and powerful circle of Clinton fundraisers in New Jersey known as "The Group."

"Respect is offering her the position with her right of taking it or not taking it," Graham explained. "He can win without her, but Hillary in the picture gives him Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida."

Now, we come to find out that his campaign never even vetted Hillary for the job! Is that showing respect? In whose book? Yet you (John), have recently declared that you are fully on board as a fund-raiser for his campaign.

Why? What changed? Is it for the money? John, do you (and the other fund-raisers) take a percentage of what you raise as a fee for your work? If so, what percent do you get?"

Max, as a reporter, you are entrusted with getting relevant information out to the public -- getting the story. I am sure all those groupie money boys are fully capable of hiring a press agent to be their lackey in dealing with the press.

It seems to many of us that it is time to start asking some hard questions of these people, not just handing them free publicity time after time!
