U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-10) issued a statement today concerning his switch of support from Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to Sen. Barack Obama (D-NJ) in their presidential contest.
"Hillary Clinton is a good friend, and I continue to hold her in high regard," said Payne, a party superdelegate. "She has made important contributions to our nation through her outstanding work as First Lady and in the United States Senate.
"After careful consideration," he added, "I have reached the conclusion that Barack Obama can best bring about the change that our country so desperately wants and needs. Sen. Obama has lived the American dream. He embodies the American ideals of hope, optimism, and the ability to take on tough challenges in order to solve difficult problems. In addition, I believe that he will work to restore America's image around the globe."
Payne transferred his support to Obama following the Illinois senator's sizeable victory in North Carolina and close loss to Clinton in Indiana in Tuesday's Democratic primaries. The presidential candidate extended his lead in the total count of delegates, and popular vote.
"The congressman's made his choice," said State Democratic Chairman Joseph Cryan, a Clinton supporter.
