Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes today said he would not challenge U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman as long as Rothman has the organization line in Bergen County.
“I would need the party support to go forward,” said Wildes, an ally of Bergen County Democratic Organization (BCDO) Chairman Joseph Ferriero, who yesterday issued a statement of support for U.S. Frank Lautenberg.
Earlier in the week, Rothman had threatened Ferriero with legal action if the chairman removed Lautenberg from Bergen’s line A on the ballot to replace him with U.S. Rep Rob Andrews, who this week jumped in the Democratic primary against Lautenberg.
In the scrap between Ferriero and Rothman, BCDO allies floated Wildes’s name as a potential opponent of Rothman’s in the event of an all out county war.
Today Wildes said, “If the opportunity presents itself, I would do it. The vacancy would have to create itself. Rothman has the line. Without that I can’t go.”
Asked if Wildes would go against Rothman in an open primary, the mayor would not speculate, but sources close to the mayor said petitions are being circulated on Wildes’s behalf - just in case.
“I will reserve comment on an open primary,” Wildes said, “but politics is very fluid, and you always have to be prepared. This mayor has got wheels on his heels.”

hmmm....i wonder if Wildes
hmmm....i wonder if Wildes would jump in to run with Andrews if he got support from Norcross in the South and Sarlo. Would he need the BCDO line when it is questionable how hard Joe will push for Lautenberg?
The myth of Michael Wildes.
The reason Michael Wildes isn't running has little to do with the line in Bergen County and everything to do with the fact that North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco and his organization supports Steve Rothman without exception or reservation.
Wildes lacks any real name recognition outside of Englewood, much less Hudson County and with Brian Stack solidly with Lautenberg, a Wildes candidacy would be trounced in Hudson as well as Bergen and his handlers couldn't deal with another humiliating loss.
Steve Rothman will be the congressman in the 9th as long as he wants too. A thought that just drives the ambitious Wildes crazy!
All the money in the world doesn't change the fact Wildes is a complete unknown in South Bergen and would lose most towns south of Route 4 in a general election. Democratic strongholds like Garfield, Cliffside Park and Palisades Park have little interest in a Wildes candidacy, The only reason why anyone takes him seriously is because he threatens to spend his own money and not the party's!
He ran for BCDO treasurer and lost. He ran for the Assembly in a party convention and lost to Valerie Huttle. He attempted this charade last year against Loretta Weinberg and pulled out at the last minute because he would been crushed at the polls and now he's spinning like a top because Ferriero isn't going to put his chairmanship at risk to make Michael Wildes a congressman.
I guess he'll need to throw away those pictures with Lautenberg along with the pictures of Joe Leiberman too!
Stop taking bad advice from the politically embittered Mayor!

My bet is on Wildes.
He will run on Andrews line with Ferriero's approval. Rothman is a goner, so is Lautenberg.

Things in this election will not be what they appear to be...
Wildes is prepared but cannot ever beat Rothman
There is no doubt in my mind that Wildes is prepared to run for Congress at a moments notice. He has been amassing a warchest over the last several years just for a congressional run and fundraising like crazy. I think he might even have a million campaign dollars in the bank with his own money ready to spend. Since he has allied himself with Ferriero, if Ferriero is still going strong when there is a vacancy eg: rothman runs for senate in a few years, I am sure Wildes will be the frontrunner. However, there is no chance in hell he can challenge Rothman, even with Ferriero's full support. Rothman is like an honorary chairman to the Hudson Democratic Committee, and is a popular political celebrity in Bergen County with key committee posts in Washington DC which help bring much additional funding for projects to NJ and Bergen County. this is not even to mention the millions Rothman has stashed away.
