State Republicans are taking a serious look at Monmouth County GOP Vice Chair Diane Gooch to run against U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-Long Branch), in part because of the depth of her pockets.
Gooch, who lives in Rumson and publishes the Two River Times in Red Bank, is married to Michael Gooch, the CEO of the New York-based brokerage firm GFI group who is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Pallone has about $4 million in the bank – the most of any congressman seeking reelection – even though he’s in a heavily Democratic district. He is usually at the top of observers’ shortlists as a statewide candidate, particularly for U.S. senate if a seat opens up, and has been open about his ambition to someday serve in the upper house. That, and his early criticism of Governor Christopher Christie for assigning lucrative federal monitoring contacts to friends and allies when he was U.S. attorney, has made him a particularly attractive target for Republicans.
Diane Gooch said that, if she runs, her campaign will not be entirely self-funded. Although sources tell PolitickerNJ.com that she and her husband have discussed putting as much as $2 million into the race, Gooch said that they had made no such determination.
“This is something that we haven’t really figured out yet,” she said. “Any number would be completely wrong. I don’t know what we’re going to spend at this point if I’m going to run.”
Michael Gooch has donated widely to both Republicans and Democrats on a federal level. In fact, since 2007, he has donated $6,400 to Pallone, including a $2,400 donation as recently as March of 2009. Diane Gooch, for her part, has also donated extensively, but only to Republicans.
One small obstacle for Gooch: she lives in Rumson, which is in the 12th Congressional District – not Pallone’s 6th Congressional District. Members of Congress are required only to live in the state that they represent, not the district.
“I think Frank Pallone lives in Washington, so I’m much closer than he is,” said Gooch. “Literally, I’m on the line, so whether I cross the line or not, it’s right there. I think people care more about how you’re going to vote for them as opposed to if you live 50 feet left or right.”
Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini (R-Ocean Twp.) confirmed last week that she has been mulling a possible challenge to Pallone, but she could get edged out if the GOP finds a challenger with considerable personal financial resources.

The NJ GOP is NUTS
Houston, we have a problem. Diane Gooch's husband Michael DONATED $2,400 to FRANK PALLONE in 1999:
Gooch, Michael
Rumson, NJ 07760
GFI Group/Chairman & CEO PALLONE, FRANK JR (D)
House (NJ 06)
PALLONE FOR CONGRESS
& $4,700 MORE to Pallone from '07-'08, both in the Primary & General Election.
What is wrong with you people??????
Send Pallone Back Home
I will support any candidate other than Pallone. He has worn out his welcome, and the voters of the 6th Congressional District should humble him. I will back anyone that can finance a successful campaign against an entrenched Democrat. Several people give to both sides of the party spectrum, because if you want any response at all to your concerns, a donation will help secure that at times. And if Diane Gooch is a closet Democrat, she will be exposed by the voting record she creates.
A Lesson Learned.
Didn't Corzine spend 23 million of his money to lose to Gov. Christie? What message does this send? Money buys you a position and our good leaders are tossed to the curb because they are not rich. This is bad business. Mary Pat is a leader. I'm sure Diane will do what's right for the people. Help Mary Pat beat Pallone.

This Is Not A Fantasy Land
If there are no material policy differences, then it is pragmatic for conservatives to support the financially stronger candidate. Until policy differences manifest themselves, I will support the person that can wage a successful campaign against entrenched, and wealthy, Democrats. The Christie/Corzine campaign is a poor analogy, because they were from different parties, holding different views, in which conservatives, disgruntled Democrats, and Independents had a clear choice on the issues. Unlike the 12th and 6th Congressional Primary race, they are Republicans, and we do not need to waste valuable resources on assaulting fellow Republicans.
Do The Right Thing
Mary Pat Angelini is a sitting Assemblywoman who is very respected in her district and in the State. Her voting record and positions are known. She has given her life to serving others in the 6th Congressional District. So am I to understand that only the rich will ever be considered for GOP candidacy? Most of us have been taught that “money isn’t everything.” The Governor himself taught us that hard work and a real desire to help the people of New Jersey is what is important. Gov. Christie will want the GOP to do what is right. The perception is that the GOP is run by the super-rich, the same GOP that blasted Corzine for throwing his money around. I do live in a fantasy land now that I am led by Gov. Christie’s values and his promise to always do what is right. Diane is a wonderful lady. Mary Pat Angelini is the clear choice to run against Pallone.
We Run To Win The Seat
We need to fight money with money to win seats. Especially in the Democratic stronghold 6th and 12th Congressional Districts. Mr. Halfacre and Mrs. Angelini are already holding elected office, and doing quite fine. Mr. Sipprelle and Mrs. Gooch do not have current public obligations and can devot their time without sacrificing the peoples business.
My political pragmatism should not be interpreted as to suggest that "good leaders are tossed to the curb because they are not rich." I have not mentioned anything about the virtue of Republicans running, or thinking about running. Any Republican is better than Holt and Pallone, even if conservatives are hard to find in New Jersey.
Another friend
of Bill Baloney's?
The GOP should tighten gun control. Looks like another one shooting itself in the foot.
why take the chance?
The 6th district knows exactly what they're getting with Mrs. Angelini. Someone that's dedicated their life first, professionally and now politically to public service and bettering her community. I'm sure Mrs. Gooch is a nice person, but having the ability to spend family money hardly qualifies a person as a proper advocate for constituents. Especially when you consider Mrs. Gooch doesn't even live there! Mrs. Angelini represents what republicans need as their face; a real woman, once a struggling single mother, she has earned everything she has in life. That in itself should earn her the nomination of this seat.
The People's Representative
The winner of CD6 will have to appeal to the Middlesex County working class. The candidate that carries Middlesex will win. We need someone to speak for the people. We need a candidate that is able to connect with the average Joe. Diane Gooch will be described as "the Millionaire Gooch" in every story. I met her a couple of times. She is really a nice woman. She has donated thousands to the GOP even though most of that money has been offset by her husband's donations to the DEMS. Mary Pat lives and works in her district, with her husband, who is a police veteran from Pallone's hometown of Long Branch. They have the connection to the people. I'm sure that Mary Pat can raise the appropriate funds for the race without the negative stigma of a super-rich candidate seeking a place among the other Washington millionaires. I’m sure Diane and Michael can have a fundraiser with several of their closest Wall Street friends and raise enough for Mary Pat to mount a good race. Lets just say we agree to disagree. You think money is more important. I think we need a “representative” of the people.
AJ Sparxx
AJ Sparxx - aka Ima Jabroni has never given to a federal candidate according to the FEC. Put your money where your mouth is big mouth. And I guess her husband is not allowed to have his own political interests? You are a joke.
GOP just wants someone rich...
She doesnt live there but wants to run there? It's poof that Republicans are looking for someone to spend Pallone's money, and not looking for someone who can give him a run for his money b/c they are well qualified to serve in the house.
Get Ready to Fund Raise
Yeah, lets be sure to bash wealthy people, its a popular theme. It sounds like we should exclude wealthy people from the process, and, while we are at it, lets exile and penalize private property. Of course the Democratic machine will play from the populist play book, what do you expect. Diane Gooch is involved with the Republican Party, is financially independent, understands business, and is a willing candidate. No matter if there is a legitimate primary campaign or not, a Republican, in this most liberal state, must be elected. We must be realists here.
There will be no Primary in CD6.
If this is between Gooch and Assemblywoman Angelini, there will be no primary in CD6. These aren't renegades. They are both great women. They will each do what they are asked by the party. My question is this, "Who would the choice be if Diane said she would not put personal money into the race?" The money is THE ONLY factor here. The GOP is salivating over Diane's money. Those who received money in the past have to support her if they want any more of it. They don't like her for her, they like her for her money. If I were her, I would ask for the party line without pledging a dime. See who they pick then. Diane knows this fact deep down as do all of us, Democrat and Republican alike. The public is not stupid and knows the same. There WILL be voter backlash. If Diane puts no money in, it goes to Asw Angelini because she is the better candidate. Unfortunately, Gooch is part of the "Wall Street Elite." If you haven't heard, they have a popularity problem these days. No one is bashing Gooch because she is rich, just bashing the fact she will get what she wants because she is rich. It comes down to whether or not the NJGOP is being led by greed. Any GOP member who says we should choose money over substance is not needed in the party. Shame on them.
And there are 50 more just like this one....
Statement by Christie-Guadagno Campaign Manager Bill Stepien Regarding Jon Corzine's Campaign Spending Spree With His Wall Street...

PARSIPPANY, NJ - Today, Christie-Guadagno Campaign Manager Bill Stepien released the below statement following the release of campaign spending disclosures: "Another election year, another campaign spending spree with his Wall Street millions for Governor Corzine as he tries to hide his failed record of high taxes, irresponsible spending and skyrocketing unemployment. Try as he might, all the money in the world isn't going to change the fact Jon Corzine told New Jerseyans that he will once again raise their taxes even higher if re-elected. Jon Corzine's millions may buy a lot of negative television ads, but it can't buy our way out of having the highest tax burden in the country and the highest unemployment rate in 33 years."
Governor Christie
Most votes cast on Election Day are those of citizens who are NOT immersed in politics. Unlike many who generally support one party or another, the average voter comes out in support of the person they believe cares most about and will do the best job for the people. I voted for Governor Christie because I believe him to be a man who will do what is right and refuse to play games. What will the people think if Governor Christie chooses to choosing to support a wealthy candidate whose name they won't know unless they've read the social pages or do a search and see that her claims to fame are that she donated big bucks to politicians, is editor of a publication that she bought, has never fought for the common person and most likely can’t relate to their issues and daily struggles? I doubt they’ll think much of him. But what will the people think if Governor Christie supports a woman who has everything the wealthy candidate has and so much more - other than big bucks? That, they will LOVE! I sincerely hope our governor - MY governor - does right for the people and supports Ms. Angelini. If not, his creditability with those of us who consider THE PEOPLE to be the bottom line will be shot. I will continue to trust that my governor will do the right thing and by showing his support for Mary Pat Angelini so she can do what she obviously does best - work hard and help others! And I will pray that he does not prove me wrong.
"I sincerely hope our
"I sincerely hope our governor - MY governor - does right for the people and supports Ms. Angelini."
That's ridiculous. No way Christie gets involved in this race. He has more important things to worry about, and the last thing he needs to do is stick his nose into a primary.
Look at Sipprelle's Ad
Mr. Sipprelle’s ad is just what I expect from a Republican, the other Republican candidate from Fair Haven just lashes out with invective press reports. The GOP and possible candidates of CD6 and CD12 should arrive at a common understanding and provide a unified conservative effort to un-seat entrenched Democrats, or be torn apart by trifling matters.

Voters may be surprised when
Voters may be surprised when they learn more
about Dianes background. Diane was born in
Queens and moved to NJ in 1986. Her father was
unemployed for more than a year when she was
a teenager. She worked a job and paid for her
own attendance at community college. Her mother
died when Diane was about 28 with a 2 year old.
Her brother was killed in the 9/11 attacks on
the WTC. Diane married an immigrant who came to
the US at 20 years with no formal college education.
Like many of the middle class she and her husband
were in debt when they bought their first house and
lived with little furniture for years. But they
strated a business and took a second mortgage
on their house from the Money Store. Diane has
raised 3 boys and runs a small business in the 6th
District. Diane is no stranger to the struggles
of the middle class. She is a fiscal conservative
who can beat Pallone.
Get me a tissue...We know the outcome!
Diane Gooch can never beat Pallone. Not with 10 million behind her. We saw what money could do in the Corzine-Christie election. Nothing. Assemblywoman Angelini is a PROVEN leader and received the most votes in the NJ11 (which encompasses a major part of the CD6) during her Assembly election. Why? Angelini connects with the people of the CD6. Even the DEMS vote for her. She LIVES in the CD6. She works in the CD6.
Unfortunately, I think that Wall Street millions will win out for sure. Gooch has donated to the National, State, and Local GOPs as well as many candidates so Diane will get what she wants. If Diane Gooch is selected, it will set the party's integrity back 10 years. The people aren't stupid. They will know what the truth is. There will be a backlash if Gooch's millions are selected over Marypat Angelini, the people's choice. I hope our Governor does what is right. I hope he supports Marypat.
Poll?
I'd love to see another poll, such as the politickernj.com poll which gave Marypat Angelini a huge lead over Gooch. Where is Scott Rasmussen when you need him?
There will definately be a backlash!
You are so right. Talk about "transparancy," if the GOP supports Gooch over Angelini, it will be so obvious that it's all about the money and NOT AT ALL about who is the best candidate to represent the people...and I'm sorry, but that just doesn't cut it for this voter! There HAVE BEEN elections won by those with much lesser money than their opponents, and I find it extremely disheartening to think that the GOP may not put their ----- on the line and do the RIGHT thing! If money talks louder than right, it frightens me to think about what OTHER decisions have been or may be made that are not in the people's best interest.
When exactly is Pallone up
When exactly is Pallone up for re-election?
As an Independent, I will definitely be voting
Republican.
Do the Republicans have someone in place yet?
