In an email to Democratic legislators on Friday, state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-Elizabeth) told them that if they vote in favor of gay marriage, “neither the wrath of God nor of voters will descend upon you.”
Citing last week’s Eagleton poll that cited more New Jerseyans supporting gay marriage than opposing it, but with only 2% considering it an important issue, Lesniak said it “certainly is important though to those gay couples who want and deserve the full protection of the law as guaranteed under the Constitution of the State of New Jersey.”
”Let's vote our conscience. I hope your conscience says support marriage equality, but if it doesn't I understand your view. What I can't understand is not voting,” he said.
Advocates for marriage equality plan to flood the Statehouse today to press legislators to bring the gay marriage bill up for a vote in the lame duck session.
Gov.-Elect Chris Chrisite has pledged to veto the bill if it passes after he is sworn in, but Gov. Jon Corzine has said he will sign it.
Garden State Equality fires new broadside at Dems Smarting over the state Senate's refusal to pass marriage equality and disillusioned at the moment with the Democratic Party majority, Garden State Equality’s 85-member Board of Directors unanimously decided against giving financial contributions to political parties and their affiliated committees. ...
“We will work harder and smarter to protect consumers, to preserve civil rights, to effectively regulate the alcoholic beverage industry, to ensure that the integrity of New Jersey’s casino gaming industry continues, to keep drives, passengers and pedestrians safe on our streets, to assist victims of crimes, and to remember always the importance of juvenile justice on issues affecting the state." -- Attorney General-designate Paula Dow, at her Senate confirmation hearing.

Thou Shall Not
Use the Lord's name in vain.
Words politicians choose in matters of worldly concern should be weighed and used wisely in the end game of influence, but to invoke a presumption of the Almighty in the context of a politically charged issue is not wise at all.
New Jersey is a small part of the United States, which is a small part of the Earth, which is a small blue planet hurling through the void in a small galaxy, in a small solar system among a giant universe yet unknown. Mr. Lesniak, take on whatever political persons you want, but understand that God might not appreciate your comment.
The issue of marriage to some religious persons falls under the rubric of "sacrament" and "sacred".
Should gay civil union couples enjoy all of the civil rights of heterosexual married couples? I would think that fairness would demand it, but not at the psychological expense of heterosexual couples. It is a federal issue, not a state issue and if there are lingering inequalities in the Civil Union law which are wholly State based, fix it, but legislators should not force society to redefine what it may not be ready to define.
If society is ready to redefine marriage, it should be left to society to redefine by a vote of the people.
By the way, God is not running for office. He already won.
Yes put it to a vote
A public vote - stop pushing your agenda on the way out in lame duck.
Senator Sweeney is right
If the legislature passes this legislation it will drive the moderate Democrats into the arms of the Republicans. The aberration of Woodbridge going to the Republicans will become a permanent occurrence.
Supportive of a vote
Hey Ray I'm supportive of a vote but not solely that of this democratically controlled legislature headed by an avowed progressive. I will though support a state wide reforendum where all the people can vote on the substance of this proposal. if you're so sure it will pass then you have an obligation to sponser the reforendum but don't try to push it through a lame duck legislature. Your unabashed support of JSC backfired and so will your future candidacy if you try to pass this through in a clandestine fashion.
Support Marriage Equality
The NJ Constitution already provides for equal access to the rights of marriage. The Legislature simply needs to ammend the administrative systems that would allow everyone to access those rights. They should vote yes for marriage equality immediately. Then, they should move onto issues like taxes, protecting our natural resources, affordable housing....
Ask the Voters
Better yet ask Jon Corzine how the voters feel.Ray Lesniak better get used to the idea that the sleeping giant has awoken and is saying enough of this liberal PC BS! Just take a look at the poll numbers of Obama and the rest of the liberal dung. The people are finally awakening. Go ahead ray and push this agenda nad you will find yourself sipping tea with Corzine and or McGreevy
It would be wise
to hand off this decision to the people. If homosexuals want to marry, they should request an amendment to the constitution. In our history this is how these matters were addressed. Slavery was ended this way, women were given the right to vote this way. For some reason, homosexuals think they deserve, not equality, but actually better treatment than anyone else.
