Runyan 'seriously considering' running for Congress

Former NFL star Jon Runyan says he's considering a challenge to U.S. Rep. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) next year.

Former Philadelphia Eagles star Jon Runyan confirmed today that he’s interested in running for Congress in the 3rd Congressional District.

“I am seriously considering becoming a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District.  Our great country is headed in the wrong direction, and it’s clearer every day that career politicians are incapable of solving the problems we face,” he said in a statement issued this afternoon.  “I am grateful for the tremendous support and encouragement I have received while talking to people throughout South Jersey about running for Congress and I look forward to having more to say on this subject in the weeks ahead.”

The statement was sent out by Burlington County Republican consultant Chris Russell.

The effort by Republicans to recruit the former tackle to run against freshman incumbent John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) was first reported by PolitickerNJ.com yesterday.

This is not the fist time that Adler has faced a potential challenge from a sports celebrity.  Last year, Republicans courted Al Leiter -- a former all-star pitcher who played with both the Yankees and the Mets -- to run against him.  Leiter, who grew up in Toms River but currently lives in Florida, declined, but remains interested in running for office someday.

Runyan, 35, is a Mount Laurel resident.

well

As a Giants fan, a Democrat, and a 3rd District voter, I personally can't wait to vote for Rep. Adler again.

Adler...

Running scared... about to get tackled.

To BurlCo Dem

You're a complete a-hole!!!!!!!!!!

"I am grateful for the tremendous support and encouragement I have received while talking to people throughout South Jersey about running for Congress" What "people" has he talked to? A handful of Camden/Burlington machine politicians. When he goes to Toms River to kiss George Gilmore's ring I might begin to take him serious. I've seen him do those dumb commercials for car dealers and he's not very good at that. He was over-hyped as a player because he knew how to suck-up to the media. And it's not like he's well-known like Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook or Andy Reid. I hope he does run. He won't get anywhere in Ocean County not only because he's not one of Gilmore's stooges but most football fans in OC follow the Jets/Giants. Adler has his base in Camden/Burlington locked up whether Runyon runs or not.

The same base that they

The same base that they banked in on in 2009 for the freeholders? The same base they spent six figures on in BurlCo for Corzine?

Guess what dude, 2010 is not 2008. Adler's pissing himself.

Runyan is a joke

Runyan was one of the dirtiest punks ever to play in the NFL.  He's an intellectually challenged bully with little experience other than blocking and tackling overgrown adolescents.

Run Myers again.  He's a decent, intelligent veteran who would be a credit to NJ politics.

Snake Pliskin?  I heard you were dead.

"He's an intellectually challenged bully with little experience other than blocking and tackling overgrown adolescents." Then he's perfect for the GOP.

And what of Adler?

A scummy worm from Norcross Country, the only pads he has ever worn are on his knees. Perfect for Cherry Hill Dems, not the rest of the district.

Considering the guy is nothing more than a glorified student council president that slipped past the electorate in 2008, I'd say this is one overgrown adolescent Runyan won't have any trouble with.

Intellectual Massacer

It would be very amusing to see Congressman John Adler in a political debate with Assemblyman Scott Rudder or former Offensive Lineman Jon Runyan.

Third District

Adler is going to have trouble with any candidate the gop runs. With Runyan's name id Adler should be scared. It's just a shame that Runyan is being taken advantage of by the corrupt burl co gop machine. Runyan probably wants to run to make a difference but does not know the truth about what really goes on in Burl Co.

Hey TadpoleMK99

You were scared of an old, out-of-shape guy and turned tail and ran from him at Otts. I'll bet Runyan will really make you wet your pants. Do us all a favor and reconnect your lips with Adler's behind.

Adler is Toast

The dirty little secret in Ocean County is that there really is no organization. Republican turnout just happens, so George really does nothing but take credit for what happens on Election Day.

If Adler can't pull big marins out of Burlington, he's TOAST! Runyan just kills him!!

11/12/09 8:40 am

How long until Adler distances himself from loser Brown?

Seriously Bill, if I got wooped as bad as you did on Election Day, I would just go away.

If Runyan runs, he wins and he will be able to raise a lot of money.

Hey Bill Brown love the new picture, I hear the Village People are getting back together and are looking for a new solidier. You should try out.

Adler Case Study

Adler's disappointing vote on health care in Congress is likely to hurt him next year in the general election. His no vote likely won't bring him any republican or independent votes and it certainly won't endear democrats to him, especially considering his prominent touting of his support for healthcare reform. Republicans will go after him for waffling on the issue and not being credible with his position. Liberal democrats will likely challenge him in a primary because of his no vote, weakening him further for the general. I think his seat likely goes back into the R category next year.

11/12/09 10:28 am

I TOLD YOU IT'S "MASSACRE"

Did you actually graduate from high school or did you lie about that too?

11/12/09 2:23 pm

"With Runyan's name id Adler

"With Runyan's name id Adler should be scared." What name? Nobody in Ocean County knows or remembers who he is, and most football fans watch the Jets or Giants. Even Eagle fans wouldn't know or care very much about him except for the fact that he was over-hyped by his buddies in the media because he knew how to suck up to them. He really looked stupid on those commercials he did for some local car dealership. I doubt if he ever sold one car from it. He is boring and unimpressive, and everytime he came on Comcast to schmooze with his reporter buddies I changed the channel. Intellectually he makes Sarah Palin look like Madame Curie. He'll be a disaster the moment he gets up before all those senior citizens living in retirement villages and tries to explain to them how he will protect their social security and medicare benefits.

Ken Bank

you should really stick to posting garbage like that over at Blue Jersey, at least over there people won't bother to point out how dumb you are since you're agreeing with them.

Retard: You really think more people will know who a freshman incumbent Congressman is than an NFL player? Go stick your head in an oven.
