New York Times: Michele Brown may have aided Christie candidacy

The New York Times reports that former First Assistant U.S. Attorney Michele Brown may have “used her position in two significant and possibly improper ways to try to aid Mr. Christie in his run for governor.”

The paper, citing three federal law enforcement officials, reports that Brown wanted to move up the date of the federal corruption busts to July 1 to ensure Christie, and not his successor – Paul Fishman – got credit for it; and that Brown took a more active role than previously disclosed in filling Freedom of Information Act requests made by the Corzine campaign.

Brown resigned shortly after NJN broke news of a $46,000 loan Christie gave her that she continued to repay throughout the campaign.  The loan became a further headache for Christie when the Times revealed that he failed to report it on federal disclosure forms and did not pay taxes on the interest income.

"Attorney General Brown" in her Dreams

It's time for Christie to admit it - he promised the AG's job to Michele and, in return, she helped him manipulate the office for political gain. Another sad New Jersey case of greed and ego run amok.

Based on what evidence? Anonymous sources?

There's far more evidence that Corzine gave Rev. Reginald Jackson's church $87,000 for an endorsement.

Quid Pro Quo and very illegal.

Will Michele Squeal For A Deal?

Just imagine all the dirt that would emerge if Ms Brown ever came clean...all the way, about her relationship with Christie.

No doubt what has come out in the NYT is just the tip of a large iceberg.  And I quote.....

 http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/nyregion/20brown.html?pagewanted=all

>>>>>>>"In August, Mr. Marra defended the office’s handling of the Freedom of Information requests and denied that Ms. Brown oversaw the process, saying she only supplied records relating to her own travel.

Yet only after Ms. Brown’s departure, five months after the requests were submitted, were the first two voluminous batches of records released.

Those records, which the Corzine campaign has parceled out to news organizations, have already proved embarrassing to Mr. Christie. News stories last week said the records showed Mr. Christie often stayed at expensive hotels on the taxpayers’ dime, routinely exceeding per diem rates set for Justice Department officials.

Additional records provided in raw form by the Corzine campaign and analyzed by The Times show that Ms. Brown accompanied Mr. Christie on 16 trips, the bulk of them in 2007 and 2008. They were often accompanied by a junior prosecutor, Kevin O’Dowd.

In August 2008 Mr. Christie’s wife, Mary Pat, joined him, Ms. Brown, and Mr. O’Dowd for a trip to London, where Mr. Christie spoke at a meeting of compliance officers at another one of the companies his office had investigated in the investigation of makers of artificial hips and knees. Mr. O’Dowd left early, while the Christies and Ms. Brown stayed on for two more days in the Park Lane Hotel. Mr. Christie paid his wife’s airfare, but the government covered the couple’s and Ms. Brown’s $401-per-night lodgings. Mr. O’Dowd declined comment.

Mr. Christie and Ms. Brown also traveled to the Venetian casino hotel in Las Vegas last year, where he addressed a sales convention of still another one of the hip and knee makers.

Mr. Christie’s in-state travel has also been questioned. He put in for more than $20,000 in mileage reimbursements during his seven-year tenure, including many trips that his public schedules indicate were made for personal or political reasons.

A die-hard Mets fan, Mr. Christie put in for $73 in mileage costs for a round-trip drive to Philadelphia on a night his schedule noted an away game against the Phillies."<<<<<<<

If Christie gave a crap about the Republican party or about the people of New Jersey he would drop out of the race and give Daggett a clean shot......but Christie's oversized ego and hubris have no bounds.

If there is any justice the most recent revelations will lead to a criminal investigation and prosecution for both of these former prosecutors!

I dare say that, face with the possibility of going to prison that Brown will roll over and squeal like a piglet........IF there is a real investigation/prosecution...and that might take a special prosecutor since so many of the folks whose job that would be may also have conflicting interests.

Maybe now Jon Cirzine will take the gloves off and seriously begin to criticize Chistie.

Corzine should win this by twenty points.....that's how much of a sleazaball hypocrite is Mr Christie.   I've been saying he's a sleaze for years and now the proof is emerging drop by acid drop.

PS

Good thing the NYT is still around to get these stories that the NJ press doesn't/won't print.  At least the NYT will listen to whistle blowers now and then and actually print the story!

10/20/09 12:16 am

Then why isn't the NY Times printing this story?

Corzine gave $87000 to Jackson's church

http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/jersey/index.ssf?/base/news-15/12560001056...

Or this story?

Solomon Dwek, key witness in N.J. corruption probe, expected to plead guilty to bank fraud charges, source says

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/10/solomon_dwek_key_corruption_wi_...

Probably the same reason why the NY Slimes is cutting 100 jobs today.

NYT Endorsed Corzine. As If They Would Say Anything Bad About Him

This is the problem when newspapers take it upon themselves to endorse political candidates. They make themselves part of the game and not the fair moderator for the people that they are suppose to be. It's hard to give the NYT respect or credibility as a fair journalism outlet when you know they are endorsing candidates.

If you honestly don't think Corzine isn't using his millions to pay for support, you are fooling yourself.

10/20/09 12:56 am

To Cozy!!!!

All of the evidence points to the fact that Christie used his position and then his relationship to manipulate the US DOJ for his own objectives and goals.  Brown acted as his alter-ego in everything she did.  It is too bad because until he arrived on the scene, the US DOJ had a good reputation.  Now, they will have to clean it up.  Christie used his relationships to try to sway the election in his favor.  There is no denying that.  The truth will ultimately come out just how he used his office for his own personal agenda.  This is not a prediction, it is fact.  Christie, Brown, and whoever else supports him in that office had too cozy a relationship.

10/20/09 7:39 am

2 unnamed sources

The NY Times = National Inquirer.... unnamed sources who are possibly pissed about not getting promoted, not getting the "plum" prosecutions....this whole thing is laughable.

Nick Lento and other J.O's have some pre mature fun---Christie will win by 2.

10/20/09 8:31 am

Wwaaaaaaaa

Nick Lento was here! Tissues please for the crybaby.

10/20/09 9:41 am

Why does one get the distinct impression...

...that we have not yet heard about ALL of the services rendered by Michele Brown?

You know, in exchange for her private loan from Mr. Christie.

= things for things

That classic scheme for which they prosecuted scores of other sleazy politicians.

And the quid pro quo must involve an official government action for it to be a crime, slime. You know, like rushing some coordinated photo-op arrests, without regard for the effect it might have on the strength of the cases, so it'll look better for your loan grantor.

10/20/09 10:36 am

Quid Pro

"You know, like rushing some coordinated photo-op arrests, without regard for the effect it might have on the strength of the cases,"

Strenght? Oh you mean like Dwek pleading guilty today or the scores of other indicted officials pleading guilty?

Where is Corzine on that? Oh that's right, he's bribing people to endorse his re-election. Why isn't he in jail now is mind-boggling.

10/20/09 11:45 am

Not Illegal.

Like it or not, Corzine giving money to the Black ministers is not illegal without some very hard core proof of what that money is for. You can speculate all you want, but lacking proof, it is not illegal.

On the other hand, not reporting monies related to your campaign or to the IRS, IS ILLEGAL.

And, manipulating the US Attorney's office for political purposes is probably indictable. Let's see Mr. Christie's explanation on that one.

10/20/09 1:47 pm

Plenty Illegal.

"Like it or not, Corzine giving money to the Black ministers is not illegal without some very hard core proof of what that money is for. You can speculate all you want, but lacking proof, it is not illegal."

Tell that to Rod Blagoveich.

10/20/09 2:11 pm

Way to downplay the story

I love the spin... "and that Brown took a more active role than previously disclosed in filling Freedom of Information Act requests made by the Corzine campaign"

The Times accused Brown of stepping outside of her department and intercepting the the FOIA.

Further, she did play a more active roll, she buried the request in a pile of paperwork to prevent Corzine from getting the records.

Furthermore, same exact day the Department of Justice made Brown recuse herself because of clear conflict of interest. Also, the same day they told her to step away Corzine's request she resigned.

Again, way to put spin on this. Again, clear bias for the GOP and Christie on this site

10/21/09 6:42 pm

Brown shouldn't have even touched the FOIA request

Brown Purposely intercepted Corzine's request to stall, stepping outside of her duties to do so.

10/21/09 6:44 pm

Bottom Lines: Cristie Looks As Guilty As Sin....

....and unless the NYT is just making up sources and lying about the allegations, both Brown and Christie are criminals.

After the election there needs to be a Special Prosecutor appointed to get to the bottom of all these serious and substantial allegations.

And as for my prediction that Corzine will win; I note that my detractors remain anonymous and don't have the courage to use their own names.  LOL

Mind you, if Corzine ran the campaign I would have wanted him to run.....the win would be by 20 points!   As it is, Christie is self destructing as more and more bits of acidic truth drip drip drip onto his collapsing candidacy with each passing day....a Corzine win by about 5 points is quite likely.  :-)

Y'all should have nominated Daggett!  He would likely have won!!!

10/21/09 9:18 pm

Alex

Alex - you know that for a fact? You know that she handled it personally? You are as full of sh1t as Nick is. Grab a tissue...

10/22/09 8:39 am

Michele Brown handled it... Its well published

the oc.

Do your research. Michele took the request and buried it for 5 months. The same day the DOJ told her she couldn't handle it because of the conflict of interest she resigned.

Says the Times:

In March, when Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s campaign requested public records about Mr. Christie’s tenure as prosecutor, Ms. Brown interceded to oversee the responses to the inquiries, taking over for the staff member who normally oversaw Freedom of Information Act requests, according to federal law enforcement officials in Newark and Washington. The requested information included records about Mr. Christie’s travel and expenses, along with Ms. Brown’s travel records.

Daggett Breaks 20% - Can win election

Daggett Breaks 20% in latest Poll. He will have a Major impact on an election.

The 20% threshold represents a pyschological barrier and breaking that barrier gives Daggett a chance to win the election.

10/22/09 2:20 pm

Alex

Alex - that story is being disputed by not only Brown but by the US Attorney's Office. Funny how the Times endorses Corzine then this story lands in their laps. Not my fault if you believe everything they write.

10/22/09 2:38 pm

Gimme a break

Its not just the Times, its all over the news.

The same day the DOJ told her to step away from the case because of the conflicts of interest she resigned.

Obviously someone has a problem dealing with the facts.

I understand that this hurts the republicans because I know how bad you want corzine out. But your not alone. Most people in NJ feel the exact same way.

But Christie's ship is sinking fast. It has been one corruption and scandal story after then next for Corzine and Christie.

Corzine was a miserable failure, but Christie is corrupt.

Facts are facts and how you ignore them I don't know.

Chris Daggett nailed Christie and Corzine for corruption in 3rd Debate saying to the both of them to fight corruption you need to lead by example.

Daggett then cited specific corrupt activities that Christie and Corzine had engaged in, including illegal campaign finance and pay to play, and neither Corzine or Christie could defend themselves.

Instead, Corzine acknowledges that activity is going on and agrees with Daggett that it needs to stop.

Daggett also called for an investigation into $6 Billion missing from the NJ Schools Construction Fund to which Corzine replied he has already put in all of the controls and regulations he could. Christie replied that as governor of NJ he would launch the investigation.

My question to Chris Christie is why didn’t you launch an investigation while you where the US Attorney General? Why wait to become Governor?

My question to the Governor is why haven't you launched an investigation?

My question to the readers is why should I vote for either one of these guys?

Bottom line is Christie can not win. To many republicans and democrats can't stomach him.

If you want to get Corzine out of office them Get The Word Out To Vote Daggett

If you're afraid that a vote for Daggett is a Vote for Corzine, don't be because the polls show Daggett is hurting Corzine and putting Christie ahead.

See this Daggett Hurts Corzine and Helps Christie

You can be sure that you don't waste your vote by making the I'll vote for Dagget pledge.

The Daggett pledge is based on a simple premise, if enough people pledge their vote then you will vote for Daggett

LMAO

LMAO at Alex. You have been called out on not telling the truth (endorsements) and you obviously got suckered into believing the Times story. Doesn't surtprise me - you don't appear to be that smart.

10/26/09 8:21 am

called out on the endorsements

Give me a break. When the Gannett papers give endorsements for Christie they all count as separate endorsements.

But when the Recorder papers do the same they all count as one.

I wasn't called out on anything. Seems like there is one set of rules for Christie and another set of rules for everyone else.

10/26/09 10:38 pm

Talk about being called out

Just about every single endorsement even the ones for Chrisitie call him out on the fact he has no plan.

For example, this is from the supposed endorsement for Christie.

Asbury Park Press: Chris Christie has run a disappointing campaign

Asbury Park Press: Chris Christie made himself vulnerable on a number of ethics-related issues

Asbury Park Press: Chris Christie has provided no specific plan for property tax relief

Asbury Park Press: We're highly skeptical of Chris Christie's ability to balance the budget

Asbury Park Press: Chris Christie has failed to offer a coherent plan to address sky-high property taxes

Asbury Park Press: Voters are disenchanted with Corzine and Christie
