The gubernatorial race is tied, according to a new Monmouth University/Gannett poll.
The poll shows Gov. Jon Corzine and Republican gubernatorial candidate Christopher Christie each getting 39%, while independent Christopher Daggett gets 14%.
A Monmouth poll from the beginning of this month showed Christie ahead of Corzine by three points - 43% to 40% -- with Daggett taking 8% of the vote.
Today's poll found that once reluctant Democrats are sticking with Corzine, but there may be some base trouble for Christie with the Republican base. Christie had 86% of Republicans' support in the poll released early in the month and has 81% of the base in todays. Corzine, who in July had 71% of Democrats' support, now has 76%.
"Democrats who flirted with Chris Christie earlier in the year have come back into the fold. It also looks like some GOP voters may have become disenchanted with their white knight. That's not a good sign for the Republican at this late stage of the game," said Monmouth Univerity Polling Institute Director Patrick Murray.
Corzine's favorable ratings remain upside down, as they have been for most of the campaign. 37% of respondents gave him a favorable rating, while 51% had an unfavorable impression. Christie, however, is also upside down, though barely - 40% of respondents have a favorable impression while 41% view him unfavorably. The majority - 54% -- of respondents didn't know enough about Daggett to form an impression, but of those who did his favorability rating is almost 2-1, with 28% viewing him favorably and 15% viewing him unfavorably.
Daggett's six point increase in the head-to-head number came at the expense of both major party candidates. He has gone from 11% to 22% support among independents - an increase that's corresponded with a 7% decrease in Corzine support and 4% decrease of Christie support among that group.
The poll found that 8% of Republicans plan to vote for Daggett - up from 3% in the early October poll - while 11% of Democrats plan to vote for the independent, which is up from 8%.
Among the lieutenant governor candidates, state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) is the most known. But 80% of respondents still either have not heard of her or have no opinion, compared to 87% for Republican Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno and 90% for Esposito. Among the few that have heard of them, all three lieutenant governors have net positive favorables (11% to 9% for Weinberg, 9% to 4% for Guadagno and 6% to 4% for Esposito.
President Obama remains right side up in New Jersey, with 53% of residents approving of his performance and 39% disapproving. But only 12% of voters said the Obama visit would make them more likely to vote for Corzine, compared to 14% who said it would make them less likely and 73% who said that it would have no effect on their vote.
The Monmouth University Polling Institute surveye 1,004 likely voters between October 15 and 18. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.

Polls are useless in campaigns
Polls are like rear ends. Everyone's got them and don't use them except to spread the dung around.
Polls are a waste of time, money and an attempt to manipulate elections--which happens to be a crime.
Corzines's payoff.
This poll was taken before the revelation that Corzine gave $87,000 to a black church that apparently endorsed him. Is this how Corzine is trying to buy the election. How is this any different than pay to play or the recent corruption of municipal officials who took bribes? The public needs to wake up and realize that Corzine means more of the same.
Christie should not have ignored Lonegan people
Christie has taken for granted that the 140,000 voters who voted for Lonegan in the primary would follow him like sheep.
He and his "people" treated them like mushrooms by keeping them in the dark room and feeding them manure.
Those 140,000 are dedicated and proud conservatives who do not take kindly to being ignored.
Many have taken up the Daggett mantra of "it is never wrong to vote for the right person."
I bet Christe would love to have those 140,000 in the bank right now.
Lonegan supporters
The thought that people that backed Steve Lonegan would in turn vote for Chris daggett is insane. Their positions are at the opposite end of the spectrum---thus if Lonegan supporters back Daggett it will have ZERO to do with Christie and everything to do with sour grapes.
Pompous comment
Loyal Party establishment Republicans like yourself just don't get it!
Christie has done the absolute worst thing possible,he took a whole voting block for granted.
He told the Lonegan supporters to sit down ,shut up,and vote for him!
HOW DARE HE!!!!
How many times has he campaigned with Steve Lonegan since June?
Lonegan supporters have been treated like 3rd class voters by the GOP establishment.
Daggett has spoken to them and he is right," It is NEVER wrong to vote for the right person"
About 140,000 Lonegan voters have heard that and they are responding.
NEVER ,NEVER ,TAKE PEOPLE FOR GRANTED!
Lonegan supporters
I must be misreading the statement that Lonegan supporters, who profess to be true conservatives and issue voters, are now going to vote for Daggett. That is not an issue or values vote, it is a betrayal of what they profess to stand for. It is hypocritical no matter how much they claim to be “ignored.”
Daggett is proposing to raise the sales and gasoline tax as well as to raise tolls. He does not seriously consider cutting spending a legitimate strategy to balance the budget. He has been a Trenton insider his whole career and has accomplished very little. He is pro-life and pro-gay marriage. He is nearly as liberal as Corzine. This is a serious option for true conservatives, especially when the result may be to put Corzine back in office?
How has Christie ignored Lonegan voters? He is the only candidate to support cutting revenue, lowering taxes, and stop borrowing. All of these are Lonegan positions. He is pro-life and will not sign a gay marriage bill. Plus, he has put 130 politicians in jail for corruption.
To Lonegan voters to back Daggett because they were somehow “dissed” is the equivalent of playground politics, taking your ball and going home because your candidate did not win. The stakes are way too high, the future of the State is literally in the balance. We cannot wait for more years for change. If you want to change the system, vote in the best candidate that represents your views and then push your issues.
one more thing
Did I mention that four State Supreme Court justices are up for appointment in the next four years and that Christie has vowed to appoint justices who will not legislate from the bench? Or do you want Corzine to make those appointments. What are the true values Lonegan voters are advocating?
Democrats gearing up to Steal the Election
Don't worry the Democrat politicians in Essex, Hudson, Camden and Mercer have all the names of voters who have moved or died and will pay the union thugs to go in and vote in their name for big Jon Corzine.BTW no one checks signatures when you vote. This is Corzines street money that will probably win him a close victory. The Democrats are expert at stealing votes. The Republicans have their head up you know where. All you Suburbanites will be outvoted by the mass of unionists, minorities, welfare recipients, state workers, teachers and atheists come election day.I would like to know how much Corzine paid Daggett to run as a third party candidate in order to drain off votes from Christie?
Where is Lonegan?
Why won't Christie campaign with Lonegan?
The answer is simple. He wants Lonegans support but he does not want his picture taken with Lonegan.
This is the same message he has sent to the loyal Lonegan voters.
HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE SEEN WITH THEM BUT HE WANTS THEM TO VOTE FOR HIM.
Well the response to Christie from Lonegan voters is geting clearer each day," SCREW YOU!"
If he had treated the Lonegan people with some respect ,like Daggett has ,then maybe those 140,000 Republican primary Lonegan voters would have "come home".
BUT INSTEAD HE HAS TAKEN THE LONEGAN PEOPLE FOR GRANTED AND THAT IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IN AN ELECTION.
He told them to stay in the closet until Nov. 3 and shut up.
Daggett is right" it is never wrong to vote for the right person"
Over 140,000 "republican" voters are saying good bye to the arrogant Chris Christie.
silly
Firstamend, do you actually read or believe what you wrote? You are willing to vote against your interests and that of the state because you were not somehow "respected." I would expect that response from some gangbanger in the hood, but surely not from an intellgent voter who claims to have values and the best interests of the state in mind. Please tell me how voting for Daggett, and allowing Corzie to win, helps the State of New Jersey.
Not voting for Daggett
I am a conservative, Lonegan supporter, and NOT voting for Daggett. I know very few who are. Daggett's votes are coming from liberals who hate Corzine and would never vote Republican.
Conservatives are going to probably sit the Governor's race out. I will be voting for my Assembly and local andidates and maybe Cullen, but not the three top tier people.
There is little difference between Corzine, Christie and Daggett so it matters little who wins. What matters is a conservative assembly as a wall to the Governor's leftist policies.
Lonegan a loyal Republican ?
you have got to check out the elec report for his own town. He didnt even donate to his own towns local Republicans. What a joke.
Lonegan is about Lonegan and not the Party
"Conservatives are going to
"Conservatives are going to probably sit the Governor's race out."
D's will return to their root and an unfortunatley large number of R's and conservatives will sit it out.
I think that there are a lot of people who wanted to vote for Christie, but will not because he never gave anyone a reason to vote for him other than he is not Corzine.
Not being the other guy will simply drive people to the devil they know. My guess is that Corzine wins going away.
Hopefully that will the impetus to get rid of the so called republican leadership in this state that has run the party into the ground. RIP!
Contribute???????
If you want to complain about Lonegan not contributing, how about the fact that the Michelin Man has not given a dime to any candidate at any level.
He has sucked the state GOP dry to the point that they don't have any money to give to their own candidates.
In fact, they are asking donors who have reached their limits to make contributions to the NJGOP, but to put "for federal elections only" in the memo line so as to get around reporting any of the money to ELEC. Want dishonest, stop whining and clean up your own mess first.
GOP base?
I suspect that there are a lot more than 8% of the GOP base that are disgusted with our choices in the Governor's race. I have no idea as to how many of us will "sit out the election" or vote third party. I agree that Daggett is not an acceptable alternative for conservatives.
If Corzine does win re-election, don't blame it on conservatives who are unwilling to give up on our principles by voting for Christie. You can place the blame squarely on the Republican establishment who worked during the primary to defeat the best chance in years of nominating a real conservative for statewide office.
We have three very liberal candidates in Corzine, Christie and Daggett. I don't pretend to know who might be a "bit" more to the left than the other. And it doesn't really matter. None of them represent anything close to my views (or the views of a good number of the "Republican base")
Opus
Being clueless must be a difficult way to go through life....my condolences
What is a conservative?
Ok, I have to go back to school and learn what the definition of a conservative is if the bloggers on this site believe that Christis is not one and is no different than Corzine. Let's start with a smaller government, less spending, cutting taxes, promoting small business, and taking on the union and NJEA special interests. How about being pro-life and not for gay marrige? How about selecting a majority of the Supreme Court who know their roles as justices? Gutting COAH? Corruption busting?
Please, all you Lonegan "conservatives" who blog out there, tell me what issues Christie differs from you. And then tell me where Corzine is on all of the above and those other issues. I don't mind who you vote for, although I think Christie is clearly the best candidate we have had in a long time, but be honest and articulate in your opinion. Stating a conclusion, "he is not a conservative" doesn't convince anyone.
Lonegan and donations
OPUS I just got a mail piece with Christie and the locals on it. Nothing from Lonegan.
So lets call it as it is. Lonegan is indeed just for Lonegan
Razor....
Sigh....I do tire of this, lets see
Not killing babies-Christie is lying
Gay Marriage-I have no idea since he has never mentioned it one way ot the other
Cutting taxes/smaller government-REALLY!!?? Interesting, since to this day he has NO PLAN to do so. Making the statements without SPECIFICS to back it up means nothing.
COAH-to "GUT" is totally subjective. Either you believe in building cabrini style projects all over the state or you do not. Right now Corzine wants to build 100,000 units. Christie could build 90,000, or 50,000, and say he gutted it. Subjective, just like his entire campaign.
Judges-Now here is one Christie specific, he supported Judge Albin and racist Sotomeyer, this is different from liberals how?
Corruption busting-he managed the office, and did not take one single case to court himself. he hired really good people, so what?
And let us not forget Christie's support for fake phoney non existant green jobs based on the hoax of man made global climate change, just like Corzine and Daggett.
The truth is we do not know what Christie is because he refuses to tell anyone.
Let's face it
The Christie campaign is run by idiots. They are an inbred, insular group who think that their feces doesn't stink.
Christie," Lonegan voters are like mushrooms"
The Christie campaign has ,since June, kept them in the dark and fed them s**t!
He has ignored them with the hope that they would go away. Quite frankly he thought that he would not need those 140,000 votes.
Now he is in trouble becasue he did not "bring them home". He did not treat either the Lonegan voters ,or the man himself ,with any respect.
Now 140,000 Republican primary voters will either sit the election out or register a Daggett protest vote.
Christe blew off the loyal Republican conservative voters and he will lose the election becuase he did.
Sigh right back
I am amazed how some of you will twist and turn rather than admit the truth that Christie is a far better choice for NJ and conservative voters than Corzine or Daggett or by not voting. Just a few corrections.
Christie is pro-life, has always stated that, but a Governor has little impact on this issue, except for some restrictions.
Christie has repeatedly stated in debates and elsewehre that he believes marrige is between one man and one woman.
Christie has 88 ways to change NJ on his web page. He has supported 14 of the 20 suggestions the Gannett folks put out on how to lower property taxes. What is not needed is item by item specifics, what is needed is a philosophical sea change. Reagan did not come in with a list of many specifics, and didn't do many of the ones he did promise, but he had a differnt philosophy on the size and purpose of government. Your refusal to believe Christie on this point has more to do with you than with what Christie is proposing.
The purpose of a US Attorney is to establish priorities and direct resources, not try cases. That would be a waste of a manager's time. It seems Christie set the right priorities in attacking corruption and terrorism.
If you do not know what Christie will do once elected it is either because you have not read his web site, are not paying attention, or do not want to admit the truth. You do know, however, what Corzie will do.
Christie refuses to acknowledge Lonegan
Mr. Chris " conservative "Christie has gone to great lengths to avoid any contact with the conservative standard bearer of the Republican Party.
Yet he wants the Lonegan people to just vote like sheep for him.
Christie can't have it both ways.
Conservative voters have noticed that he has been two-faced. The price will be a lost election.
Conservatives at least know that Corzine does not think like them .They have now found out that Christie is simply a back stabber.
"Now 140,000 Republican
"Now 140,000 Republican primary voters will either sit the election out or register a Daggett protest vote."
Neanderthals had their chance last June and they got blown away. 200,000 Republican primary voters rejected Steve Lonegan and his cockeyed ideas.
Get over it.
http://christiegonewild.blogspot.com/
"Now 140,000 Republican
"Now 140,000 Republican primary voters will either sit the election out or register a Daggett protest vote."
That's stupid. If Neanderthals want to register a protest they can vote for Jason Cullen. If the latter gets more than an insignificant percentage it would demonstrate that alot of wingnuts are unhappy with Christie.
Even a large number of write-in votes for Losegan would have an impact.
Daggett will get most of his support from moderate Republicans and independents. A wingnut who votes for Daggett will do nothing more than elevate Daggett's credibility and the legitimacy of his policies which are diametrically opposed to what the unreconstructed Loneganistas support. You might just as well vote for one of the socialist candidates.
http://christiegonewild.blogspot.com/
This is why Lonegan voters are opposed to Chrisite
Establishment Republicans have been smug and arrogant when it comes to Lonegan and his supporters.
Read fanovflorio and you will understand how Christie will lose those 140,000 votes that wentto Lonegan.
Folks Firstamend07 Is What's Known As A...
..."concern troll". Look it up lol.
He wants Corzine to win, as do I. But he pretends to have "concern" for the angry abused Lonegan voters in order to somehow drive Christie into re-reaching out to them...since that would likely cause him to lose more of the undecideds than he would recover of the Lonegan folk.
Technically, "first" is on my side on this; but, frankly, I think his tactics suck. There's no need to play those kinds of trollish games.
......and for what it's worth I suspect that most of the people who voted for Lonegan in the primary will wind up coming out to vote against Corzine (i.e. hold nose and vote for for Christie)....and that Corzine will still win by about 5 points since Christie has turned out to be so very vulnerable on the a-hole issue.
The guy is a certifiable verifiable assaholic who has to remind every woman who has ever been confronted with an insensitive bully boy of her unpleasant memories. I predict he loses the women's vote big time.
PS The poll is indeed just a snapshot in time; but if you put all those snapshots together you get a moving picture and all that movement is away from Christie. Momentum counts!
Daggett Breaks 20% - Can win election
Daggett Breaks 20% in latest Poll. He will have a Major impact on an election.
The 20% threshold represents a pyschological barrier and breaking that barrier gives Daggett a chance to win the election.
http://njelection.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/daggett-breaks-20-in-latest-p...
firstamend07
"Read fanovflorio and you will understand how Christie will lose those 140,000 votes that went to Lonegan."
I agree this clown is some kind of troll spouting the same nonsense over and over again. I think he may be working for Daggett since he seems so intent to get the Loneganistas to vote for someone who is antithetical to their beliefs.
If he were genuine he would try to get Loneganistas to vote for Jason Cullen, the independent conservative, or write-in Lonegan. A substantial vote for these guys would signify lack of conservative support for Christie and cost him the election.
I really think firstamend07 does not want Chris Christie to lose so much as he wants Daggett to win.
http://christiegonewild.blogspot.com/
The house of cards will come tumbling down...
Once the voters who want Corzine out of office realize that Chris Christie’s ship is sinking faster than the Titanic we are likely to see a mass migration of voters from the Christie camp to the Daggett camp. Recent news about Christie includes a possible Christie Affair with Michele Brown, Christie’s family is connected to the Mob, accusations of several multi-million dollar extortion scandals, and even a petition to the DOJ by a NJ Senator to have Christie investigated for abusing his power as US Attorney General for political purposes.
Within the Republican Party there is a large group of Lonegan supporters that absolutely despise Chris Christie. The news that Daggett is polling at 20% could become the tipping point for these voters to jump ship and get on board with Chris Daggett.
On the flip side, there a majority of Democratic voters who would rather not vote for Corzine. These Democratic party voters feel that as bad as Corzine has been Christie would be much worse. And Christie’s recent steady drip of corruption scandals are help convincing them otherwise. For this group of voters the news of Daggett Breaking 20% in the latest poll is likely to sway a large portion of these voters to vote for Daggett Come election day.
Daggett Nails Corzine and Christie on Corruption in 3rd Debate
Don't by that GOP non-sense that Daggett is a plant funded by Corzine. Fact is Daggett has no funds at all.
Futhermore, Chris Daggett nailed Christie and Corzine for corruption in 3rd Debate
You really have to hand it to Chris Daggett. Not only did he stand toe to toe with Jon Corzine and Chris Christie he really nailed it to them in the 3rd NJ Gubernatorial Debate. Once again, for the third time in a row, I give this as a notch for Daggett.
Chris Daggett handed it to both Christie and Corzine for corruption saying to fight corruption you need to lead by example.
Daggett then cited specific corrupt activities that Christie and Corzine had engaged in, including illegal campaign finance and pay to play, and neither Corzine or Christie could defend themselves.
Instead, Corzine acknowledges that activity is going on and agrees with Daggett that it needs to stop.
For full coverage of the 3rd NJ Gubernatorial debate click here.
Daggett breaks 20% and now polling in the low 20's
Get The Word Out Vote Daggett
Have to vote for Daggett !
Three simple reasons:
Corzine has got to go
Christie's candidacy is insulting voters
The "Re-Elect-Me" Parties need a clear message - NO MORE!
Besides, if NY's Albany fiasco was a barometer, an incapacitated, dead-locked state government is right now our best bet. An independent in the Governor's office offers the hope that Trenton will do no harm.
Daggett is only choice...
Real simple folks:
Corzine - a proven failure;
Christie - Incompetent political hack who insults our intelligence with his standard drivel and no REAL plan to cut spending in NJ;
Daggett - has a very good plan to cap spending that has real incentives for local governments to get their spending under control. I went to his website (rather than hear what the dopey media tells us) and there are a lot of good ideas here;
99% of TV ads tell us why the other guy is no good. that tells you all you need to know about Corzine and Christie
