Von Savage calls Shaftan 'reckless;' Lonegan backs primary challenges to three congressmen
Conservative strategist Rick Shaftan says potential candidates have emerged to take on three Republicans who voted for cap and trade Credit: Facebook.com

Cape May County Republican Chairman David Von Savage said today that he does not agree with U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo's (R-Vineland) vote on cap-and-trade, but that conservative political consultant Rick Shaftan is “taking advantage of a highly volatile situation” by helping candidates take up primary challenges against three Republican congressmen who voted for cap-and-trade legislation on Friday.

“I think Rick Shaftan is reckless," said Von Savage. I understand Rick is a vendor, and therefore looking for willing accomplices to advance his financial endgame.”

Von Savage, whose county is entirely represented by LoBiondo, said that he does not agree with the his congressman's vote.  Instead, he favors tax incentives for alternative energy development and over  “punitive levels of taxation” to wean the United States off foreign fossil fuels.

“While there are issues regarding the Congressman’s vote with conservatives in the party, I think it’s irresponsible for Shaftan to be sticking his nose down this way,” he said.  “Respectfully, what he ought to do is consider relocating to the south and utilizing his approach to campaigning south of the Mason-Dixon Line.”

Shaftan had a come back for that line.

"I'll see him soon, because Cape May County is south of the Mason-Dixon Line, as is much of the 2nd Congressional District," he said. (The Mason-Dixon Line followed the southern border of Pennsylvania, which is north of Cape May County, but cut south along the Delaware-Maryland border).

Von Savage is considered one of the state’s most conservative county chairs, though he takes issue with the characterization’s implication that his views are out of the mainstream.

Shaftan, who ran Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Lonegan’s campaign this year, anticipated that miffed Republicans would accuse him of trying to profit from the conservative outrage by luring in clients.  He said that he has plenty of political work lined up down south, and that he would have to pick convenience over profit to run campaigns in his home state.

“It’s a lot easier to do them in New Jersey than Texas.  A lot more money in Texas though,” he said.  “There’s lots of work out there.  For Lonegan I had to give up a lot of work – all my Virginia work.”

Shaftan said that he was not recruiting candidates, but that outraged conservatives were coming to him.

Lonegan, for his part, fully backed primary challenges against LoBiondo and the other two Republicans who voted yes: U.S. Reps. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton) and Chris Smith (R-Hamilton).

“The ‘Three Taxateers’ here -- LoBiondo, Smith and Lance -- are the poster children for primaries,” said Lonegan, who is currently Senior Policy Director of the anti-tax advocacy group Americans for Prosperity.

“This is an anti-American bill. It’s designed to drive industry and businesses out of this country. There should be a concerted, all out effort to recruit the best candidates, raise money for them and hold them accountable.”

I did not know Shaftan was recruiting

It sounded more like people were asking for advice. I do know of others that are actively seeking challengers for these seats and most do not have anything to benefit financially other than the prospect of good government for a change.

Wreckless?

What is voting for Crap In Trade? I cannot tolerate the assembly of anal orifii representing the "Republican" party. Perhaps Rick is as frustrated as I am.

Were long past surgical strike at the Republican Leadership, it is time to nuke them.

Von Savage = Republican Van Helsing

a huge horror story for all Republicans.
Where is this Savage going to get all the Post Industrial age jobs for all the Illegals that uncle Frank from Vinelands wants to employ. ? Is there a course in Spanish to become a rocket scientist and eco expert from Landscaper in 6 months.?
Get real America / NJ is going down the tubes with the help of Van Helsing Obama.

"Reckless" Capitalist approach?

Mr. Von Savage,
If you are a conservative, as claimed in this article, how can you cheapen yourself to defend 3 liberals who voted for one of the biggest government programs ever? Or are you that historically-challenged?....
There are plenty of us conservatives that are up on arms with this Cap and Trade bill. Incidentally, the authors are Socialists as all those that got on board and voted YES.
I, for one, will do everything in my power to get these 3 blokes out of Congress and then I'll go to work on the remaining RINOs.
p.s. And if Shaftan is looking for non-governmental type work, isn't that a good Capitalist approach?....

If you're voting with Obama on cap & trade...

How can you expect rank & file Republicans or conservatives to support you?

The chairman is way out of line here. He would be more than willing to dump an incumbent for much less than to hold them accountable to the principles of the GOP.

Lance, LoBiondo and Smith are embedded back banchers with no strategy or desire to become a majority party again. They are more than content to sit back and give tacit support to the Obama Administration and refuse to the play the role as the engaging minority.

Should NJ lose a congressional seat, the three of them could find themselves in much more competitive districts come 2012.

The enemy is no Shaftan. The mistake here is playing both sides of the fence and then being upset when party members call you out on such ridiculous votes.

Vote Column "A" - All the way!

Von Savage is a clown. I

Von Savage is a clown. I spoke to him during the primary and he said every single one of the county reps vote for Christie. I told him that I though making that claim was ridiculous because some delates have stated they were for Lonegan. I asked him to put a reasonable statement that was believable. He, of course, refused. I would never believe anything he says.

Cape May County is going ahead with all kinds of grants programs, bike paths of less than a mile, and dual office holders is the name of the game down here. The County exec O'Conner is also the Cape May Bridge Commissioner who just raised tolls last year 50% and now absorbed another bridge. The toll takers say O'Conner was toll collector who collected all kinds of information on people and held it over their heads in order to get ahaead. Now the guy answers to no one (except maybe Nick Asselta).

RINO's ALL

If Chris Christie were in Congress he would must assuredly have joined the other RINO's in voting with the liberal Democrats.

I for one am sick to death of liberals hijacking MY Republican party and then having the nerve to attack real conservatives who question their votes.

I will work to defeat the three spineless NJ Congressmen in 2010 and will do my best to see that Chrisie never makes it to Drumthwacket.

Von Savage the Un-American non Republican

Did this man actually suggest that conservative Republicans move to the south? Did he actually suggest that people who believe in a conservative ideology should limit the promotion of their beliefs to the south and that such ideals have no place outside of the south such as in New Jersey? Not only was that an extremely bigoted and offensive statement, it was a slap in the face to the very base of the party which he is a so-called county leader of. Perhaps Mr. Von Savage should try harder to defend the liberal votes that he condones rather than use fascist language to try and squash opinions that differ from his own. After seeing Von Hitler Savage make the statement that he did, I can only assume that in addition to finding congressional challengers to the three representatives who betrayed the economic future of our nation, the people of Cape May will also find a suitable challenger to him for the leadership of the party in their county.

May God bless America and provide us with the strength and perseverance necessary to thwart and eliminate the hidden cowards among us.

Shame Shame Shame Shame Shame

I totally agree that this trio of turncoats deserve to lose the next election. It would be far better to defeat them in a primary, than to lose the seats to Democrats in the fall. I my have disagreed with Shafton in the past but he is dead right on this one. There is no excuse for their actions and their offices were deluged with phone calls against this bill and warning them of the consequenses. What did they get in return for their vote? However, I disagree with the previous post in taking it out on Chris Christie. Would it be better to have Corzine back in Drumthwacket than have any Republican as Governor? Get REAL!

Crap and Tax is bad for NJ and so are the three that voted for Y

The Crap and tax bill is the bigggest tax increase in America's history and those three Rino's that supported it are in big trouble.  If Van thinks that the people can still support these three then  he should go as well.  I am not a big fan of Shaftan but in this case he is right on.

When the bill is knocked down

in the Senate, nobody is going to give a poo.

Nobody?

You may be right bitaro but you can call me nobody.

May God bless America and provide us with the strength and perseverance necessary to thwart and eliminate the hidden cowards among us.

Von Savage = Establishment Hack

Von Savage is part of the PROBLEM. This self proclaimed Conservative partnered with GOP party boss George Gilmore, and jumped all over Rudy Giuliani '08.

As if that wasn't enough, he was part of the mastermind scheme to change the Delegates from Congressional District to Winner Take All, aka the "Rudy Rule."

For an encore this nitwit then backed Anne Estabrook, no wait, make that Andy Unanue, in last year's carousel of candidates in the US Senate Race.

These 3 were some of the

These 3 were some of the biggest Chris Christie supporters and this is exactly what you will see in any Christie OR Corzine adminstration.

Von Savage is a plagiarizer

He's plagiarizing my comments on other threads.

"Cape May County is going

"Cape May County is going ahead with all kinds of grants programs, bike paths of less than a mile, and dual office holders is the name of the game down here."

Why do you care? You're moving out of state.

Cap and Trade- NJ Politics

If it was never clear before- it is now- that Con. Chris Smith is a left leaning Rep. who poised as a reasonable conservative with the Right to Life issue....I will NEVER vote for him again,as I have in the past twenty years.
Rick Shaften and Steve Lonegan are The NJ Conservative Wave of the Future and I will go where ever they lead. There are no two more decent and principled men. Perhaps Lonegan will run for Smith's seat?? or one of the other? Hopefully before the country goes down in flames thanks to the corruption of Obama, Congress and the rest!

"Hopefully before the

"Hopefully before the country goes down in flames thanks to the corruption of Obama, Congress and the rest!"

I blame the gutless regular Republicans for failing to stand up for their platform.

The REpublicans

bought and paid for
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Rep...

"The League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club have directed support toward the New Jersey Republicans who voted for the new regulations. Rep. LoBiondo received $1,020 from the League of Conservation Voters (PAC) in the 2008 election cycle and $2,010 from the Sierra Club (PAC) in the 2006 election cycle.
Rep. Lance, who first elected to Congress in 2008, has already received a donation from the League of Conservation Voters (PAC) for the 2010 election cycle in the amount of $250. Rep. Smith also received a $250 (PAC) donation from the League of Conservation Voters in the 2008 election cycle."

whores, all three of them, to sell out an entire constituency for a few hundred bucks. These guys are the sort that'd set his sister on fire for a dime. More despicable than democrats these 3 are.

He is not reckless, he is a

He is not reckless, he is a businessman. He makes a living duping ignorant candidates (ie Lonegan) into thinking they have a chance of winning. He uses wedge issues to raise money from equally ignorant supporters and takes his 1/3 cut as his candidate loses. Cha ching.

On a side note, I find it funny that a campaign whose supporters consistently poked fun at Christie's weight have an obese campaign candidate along with an obese consultant like Shaftan.

Shale understand your frustration

over the 3 Congressmen. Christie though still puzzles me. You will fight to not get him elected just so you can see a man who has raised the NJ Sales Tax 16%, Raised your state taxes, increased your debt at an alarming rate and helping to keep him in office is good for you and the rest of the Republican Party and the State of NJ How?

your argument

Your argument that we should vote for Chrisie is exactly the same one that was forced down our throats every time one of those liberal Congressmen were running for office. You guys always told us that we "better" vote for them or risk having a Democrat in office. Same argument you used to get us to vote for liberal McCain last November. But I'm done listening to that argument. A liberal is a liberal is a liberal. And I don't care if they "call" themselves a Republican. They are still liberal and I refuse to vote for one and then be forced to defend a member of MY party when he ends up helping the Dems to destroy my country (or in Christie's case, my state.) Since NJ is destined to go "down the tubes" let it be under the leadership of a Democrat. Then... let's all get the hell out of here.

Why Lonegan People are doing it wrong.

OK, we get it. You're CONSERVATIVES. Some of you are even CONSERVATIVES WITH ATTITUDE. OK.

You're also not getting it.

"Perfect is the enemy of the good."

You want a checklist candidate, someone who agrees with you on 100% of your "beliefs." OK. we get it.

But the fact of the matter is that even if Any Rand and Steve Lonegan had a baby together, and that baby grew up and ran for congress and got elected, even that hell-spawn might *gasp* might take a position or two that disagrees with your 'perfect' set of beliefs. You're willing to throw out the fact that "your" candidate agrees for and advocates for 95% of your 'beliefs.' You're willing to throw him into the street over the 5% of stuff you disagree on.

See why no one takes you seriously?

I mean, even if someone thought you were right in your 'principled' stance, what incentive is there to work with/accommodate/compromise with a group of people who are so rigid they are willing to part ranks and stab you in the back over the littlest thing? In fact, willing to turn on an ally over ANYTHING, no matter how small?

This cap-and-trade bill stands no chance of passage in the Senate. None. Even the Democrats know this. why don't you? oh yeah, that's right, you need something to foment over. To rally around. To use to knock down fellow republicans.

p.s. Anyone who responds to this post by stating something along the lines of "there are some things you can't compromise over, like principles" give yourself two points for hard-right groupthink. Cap-and-trade isn't a matter of principle, idiot, it's a matter of money. Voting with your wallet and voting with your conscience are two often different things, and confusing thw two is something "lonegan-lite conservatives" are really confused on. Voting to reduce your taxes my friend is not a 'moral' stance or a 'principle.' It's just self-preservation, self-interest, and (sometimes) it's just selfish.

If cap-and-trade cost NOTHING, cost no jobs, and really helped the environment, you'd be for it, right? RIGHT. See, it's NOT about PRINCIPLES, it's about perceived costs- wallet-clutching, nothing more. So spare me your lofty principles, Rich Shaftan and Steve "The Lisp" Lonegan.

"Rep. Lance, who first

"Rep. Lance, who first elected to Congress in 2008, has already received a donation from the League of Conservation Voters (PAC) for the 2010 election cycle in the amount of $250. Rep. Smith also received a $250 (PAC) donation from the League of Conservation Voters in the 2008 election cycle."

Wow!! No wonder they sold out for that kind of money. I wonder what they'd do if they got $2500 instead of $250. Drop their pants and do the shimmy-shimmy on a tabletop with a lamp shade on their heads?

A simple checklist

Uphold the US Constitution including the 9th and 10th Amendments and the concept of enumerated powers.

We already have one party that believes bigger government is the answer to all issues. The Republican Party must stand for individual liberty and fidelity to the rule of law.

ha hahahahahahah

They WRITE the laws. Bwah Ha ha ahahahahah. What they say is LAW, get it?

See, so if they pass 'cap and trade' then it is LAW. So, when cap-n-trade has the force of law behind it, then you are for it?

Keep clutching your wallets, fools. Also, it might help your "upholding the law" arguments if you guys actually were for upholding ALL of the laws (abortion rights, gun controls, etc) even the ones you don't like.

Another shill argument.

Where do you read in the Constitution

that the government should promote solar and wind power or tax anything that produces carbon dioxide?

"Keep clutching your

"Keep clutching your wallets, fools. Also, it might help your "upholding the law" arguments if you guys actually were for upholding ALL of the laws (abortion rights, gun controls, etc) even the ones you don't like."

The bottom line for these "limited government" clowns is making sure that government is limited to promoting their interests.

"that the government should

"that the government should promote solar and wind power or tax anything that produces carbon dioxide?"

It's called the interstate commerce clause and "throat of commerce" rule.

I love it!!

When all of you are done knocking yourself out with your infighting let us Van Drew supporters know so that we can come in and pick up the pieces.

Let's see...

Let's see, a guy who chases tornadoes for a hobby is reckless??? Gee, what a surprise.

Rick you got fat, real fat, put down the cookie pal, will you!

"Christie though still

"Christie though still puzzles me. You will fight to not get him elected just so you can see a man who has raised the NJ Sales Tax 16%, Raised your state taxes,..."

This is the scam regular Republicans have been playing for years. The game that we are suppsed for some idiot because the other candidate is worse just does not fly anymore. I didn't vote for McCain and I won't vote for Christie either. I could vote for someone I agree with on 80% or so but these people are more like 20%. NJ will probably need to go bankrupt like the mid 1800's before a decent candidate is put forth. I hear Van Drew all the time and he does not sound much differnt than Christie. From what I heard Van Drew wanted to be a Republican but they shut him out so he went with the Dems. Some people may make a party distinction between these people but there really is none ... Jeff Van Drew, Nick Asselta, Kirk Conover, Keith Davis, Jim Whelan, Vince Polistina, John Amodeo, Bill Gormley, ... all the same.

The Problem...

The problem with the support of cap-and-trade from these 3 Republicans is that other Republicans can no longer use cap-and-trade against Dem incumbents in other districts without embarrassing Lance, LoBiondo & Smith.

Think about it... Cap-and-trade forces homeowners to spend tens of thousands on green HVAC and window upgrades before they can sell that home. If A GOP candidate running against Frank Pallone next year were to rip Pallone for his "Yes" vote because of its incredibly high cost to lower and middle class homeowners, Pallone's comeback would be, "Well, Lance, LoBiondo & Smith disagree with you, so you are out of the mainstream!"

That vote puts other hopeful Republicans in a difficult position.

"We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work!"
- FDR's Treasure Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, in 1939, on 8 years of New Deal spending as an attempt to end the Great Depression.

"I didn't vote for McCain

"I didn't vote for McCain and I won't vote for Christie either."

I thought you'd be busy looking for a home in North Carolina. Found anything yet?

"The problem with the support of cap-and-trade from these 3 Republicans is that other Republicans can no longer use cap-and-trade against Dem incumbents in other districts without embarrassing Lance, LoBiondo & Smith."

This may come up in the primaries next year if Shaftan is able to recruit some suckers to run against these guys. But by the time of the general elections it will be a nonissue (it is already except for the wingnuts on the outer fringes of the political spectrum).

Len Lance is a great guy and even though I don't live in his district I will do everything I can to help him get elected.

Shale

If you leave 1st it will give the rest of the republicans a better opportunity to win this Nov. Try and take a few others that feel the same way with you.
