Lesniak, Cryan and Scudiery form legal defense fund for Union Democratic chair

Some prominent Democrats have set up a trust to pay the legal expenses of Union County Democratic Chairwoman Charlotte DeFilippo, who is under investigation by the State Attorney General's Office.

State Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Elizabeth), Assemblyman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) and Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Victor Scudiery are organizing and administering the fund, according to two sources.

In November, 2007, The Star-Ledger reported that the Attorney General's office subpoenaed documents relating to DeFilippo's "public and private business dealings" - including documents from the Union County Improvement Authority, which she heads; information on her duties as a legislative aide to former Assemblyman Neil Cohen, who has since been indicted on child pornography charges; documents relating to the Union County Democrats' involvement in the 2006 Roselle primary; and a client list a financial records from Camelot Title Agency, in which DeFilippo and Cryan hold minority stakes.

There have been no further public developments in the investigation since then, and the state Department of Law and Public Safety declined comment.

"We do not confirm or deny investigations," David Wald, a spokesman for the Attorney General, told PolitickerNJ.com.

It is unclear how much money has been raised by the fund, although one source put estimated commitments, most of which have been fulfilled, in the five figure range.

Reached by phone yesterday, Cryan, who also chairs the Democratic State Committee, declined to comment.  Phone calls to Lesniak, DeFilippo and Scudiery were not returned.

Union County Republican Chairman Phil Morin said that he had not heard anything about the DeFilippo defense fund.

"Sounds like there's trouble brewing," he said.

Corzine contribution

just how much did Corzine contribute to defend a democratic boss under investigation for corruption?  only in NJ would you have the governor and his leadership team raising money for a political corruption investigation.

What does she have on them

Who is she that this people are getting a fund together to help her fight "potential" corruption charges?

mistletoe

you really need to get out a little bit. New Jersey is not alone.

By the time anything is done

Gov Brian Hackett will be retiring.

Wow

Something fishy going on here.

These 3 are demonstrating

These 3 are demonstrating that they are her bitc_es, likely because she has a lot on them. They have to raise money - since she's never earned anything because she has no skill worth paying for in the private sector. She is a nasty SOB, however, and her 3 little boys will help pay her expenses. Lesniak lives alone in Elizabeth...odd.

well

Vic Scudiery is a class act and one of few decent and honest pols left in New Jersey politics.

Chain Smoking Charlotte

Joe Cryan really knows how to pick 'em -- first he lays his capital on the line for Grandma Linda Stender and now he's humping donors to support Charlotte's legal fight.  This one will probably end the same way things ended for Spender Stender.  Cryan must want her to fight the charges because if she cooperated, hmmm, she probably has the goods on the state Dem chairman.  The Union County Dems are a corrupt organization.  A RICO indictment would be appropriate.  Hasn't anyone ever wondered how she was able to function as an aide to Cohen, yet she never left her kitchen in Hillside?  Amazing.  And I'm sure she shows up to all the UCIA meetings.  Yeah, right.

Know Your Rider

Hey, Know Your Rider,

What you need to understand is that YOU would be the subject of A RICO indictment before any of the Union County Democrats ever will be.

That is just the way things happen in Union County New Jersey.

What you need to understand is that while this matter is certain to be adjudicated, it just isn’t going to happen in public, and it just isn’t going to happen in a courtroom.

That is just the way things happen in Union County New Jersey.

However, that is not to say that testimony will not be taken, or that others will not bear witness.

That is just the way things happen in Union County New Jersey.

What will be interesting to watch is what will happen next, because there are only two possible outcomes, either there will be a plea deal and an accompanying seismic shift along political fault lines, or there is going to be a body count.

Oh, the suspense and drama of it all.

Donating my Rolex to Aunt Charlotte

Since Uncle Ray don't hand over his Rolex at the recent early morning fundraiser at his house, I'm going to man up and hand mine in.

I'm no fan of double-dipping, corrupt and ethically challenged politicians, but after seeing Aunt Charlotte’s picture above, I want her to get some plastic surgery before she goes into the penitentiary. Seriously, she is gonna scare the most hardened thug with her mug.

Can someone help me out to establish the value of a Rolex? This is no ordinary watch; in fact I got it on the street in NYC for about $35. It says Rolex, but truth be told, it hasn't worked for about 5 years. How much should I take as a charitable contribution for this?

Charlotte, if your’re reading this, no need to thank me. I’m just trying to help the cause.

Three blind mice?

Why would these three band together for a defense fund? Only reason I can think is that they're getting close and homage must be paid.
Wasn't it Lesniak and Cryan who sort of turned in Cohen to alternative law services when child porn was discovered on his state computer? But why fear when it is the state AG who is investigating? One more reason to elect a state AG. Recent history tells us that the recent state AGs (decade) would never advance in an election. Wasted legislation there Codey.
