Christie addresses ethics questions head-on

Saying that his gubernatorial campaign was committed to transparency, former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie held a press conference today to invite reporters’ questions about a spate of recent reports and critical columns detailing concerns over his past awarding of federal monitoring contracts.

“I’m not going to stand around and be a political punching bag of caddies for candidates who don’t have a record to sell, a story to tell, and actually attack the candidates who do have something to sell,” said Christie.

The press conference was meant to squelch an increasing number of attacks by political opponents and news columnists charging Christie -- who is running largely on his record as a corruption-busting U.S. Attorney -- with hypocrisy and cronyism over his awarding of federal monitoring contracts during his tenure as U.S. Attorney.  Christie, however, said that he decided to broach the topic after conservative columnist Paul Mulshine's latest column "ruined my ability to enjoy my son's baseball game with a smile on my face."

"‘I was tired of reading it. So if that means putting out a fire, you can call it that"," he said."

Christie accused his opponents of “dragging my brother through the mud” over questions about his appointment of David Kelley, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, to a multi-million dollar federal monitoring contract for a medical implant company.

As U.S. Attorney, Kelley indicted 15 investment firm co-workers of Christie’s brother, Todd, who was not indicted but later faced a civil complaint from the SEC (The case against the co-workers ultimately failed, with 10 charges dropped, three found not guilty and two guilty pleas reversed).

Todd Christie has since settled the complaint with the SEC, admitting that improper trading took place in his company but not acknowledging any wrongdoing.

“The fact of the matter is none of my brother’s trades could even meet a civil standard of fraud, let alone a criminal case,” said Chris Christie.

When questioned as to why he would appoint Kelley to monitor a company despite the botched case against the traders, Christie said he was sure it was “not [Kelley’s] proudest day,” but that he judged him on the entirety of his work as U.S. Attorney.

Chris Christie lashed out against former state Sen. Richard LaRossa (R-Ewing), who in his unpaid column for PolitickerNJ.com wrote about Todd Christie and David Kelley.  Christie said that this Web site in particular has had a bone to pick with him since he indicted Charles Kushner on charges of tax fraud, campaign finance fraud and witness tampering.  Kushner’s son Jared bought PolitickerNJ.com – then-known as PoliticsNJ.com -- in 2007.

“Those people… who are on the Kushner-owned web site, I've never been on their holiday card list,” said Christie.  “Ever since I sent Kushner to jail, my coverage on Politics–or PolitickerNJ.com--has not been sterling. While I'm sure there are lots of good, well-intentioned people, the editorial policy there has not been favorable since I sent Charles Kushner to jail.”

The reports and columns about his brother’s prosecution and an alleged quid pro quo contract with Kelley are the latest controversy to arise over Christie’s awarding of deferred prosecution agreements.

The first flare-up was in 2007, when it was revealed that Christie had awarded former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft – his former boss – a contract worth $28 to $52 million.

More recently, Christie has taken fire for accepting over $23,800 from the law firm Stern & Kilcullen, whose partner, former U.S. Attorney and Federal District Judge Herb Stern, had been tapped by Christie to head federal oversight of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).

Christie said that Stern uncovered $400 million in waste and fraud at the school, which he referred to as a “patronage pit,” and that his investigation led to the indictment of former state Sen. Wayne Bryant, who had a low-show job there.

Christie also credited his use of deferred prosecution agreement with ending what he said was a widespread practice of medical implant companies bribing doctors to use their products.

“This is an industry that is now transformed,” he said.

Although much of the criticism Christie has recently faced has come from his Republican primary opponents – specifically Assemblyman Rick Merkt (R-Mendham) and former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan – Christie, true to his campaign strategy of largely ignoring his GOP rivals, only targeted Gov. Corzine in his remarks.

“His campaigns are vicious, negative, personal campaigns. That’s what this one will be,” he said.  “Because if you had his record, you can’t talk about it. So you’ve got to try to diminish me.”

Corzine has remained silent on the issue of federal monitoring contracts, but Christie singled out his political allies like state Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck), who called on Christie to return donations from Stern’s law firm.

“The woman who sat by while UMDNJ was burning to the ground from her senior position on the health committee and did nothing,” said Christie.  “Maybe if she paid some attention to her oversight responsibilities, perhaps there wouldn’t be such a mess to clean up…. Do your job.  Stop trying to caddy for the Governor.”

Christie said that he will not accept any more donations from people who he appointed for federal monitoring contracts during his time as U.S. Attorney – but only because he felt the issue had become a distraction from the more important problems facing the state.

Weinberg, for her part, said that she was a vocal critic of UMDNJ, even before Christie’s office began investigating it.  Still, she said, she was glad that his office got involved.

“First of all, I don’t play golf.  Second of all, I wouldn’t be caddying for the Governor or any other man I know.  And third of all Mr. Christie would have to admit that I’ve been involved in anti-pay-to-play legislation not in anybody’s surrogate but as my own person,” said Weinberg.  “I know he’s running against the Governor, but if he wants to debate me I’d be happy to do it.”

Democratic State Chairman Joseph Cryan, who has played the role of Corzine's chief defender so far in the race, doubted Christie's stated motive for picking Kelley for a contract.

"Christie wants us to believe that in a country with more than one million lawyers the one most qualified to receive this no-bid contract is the one that let his brother off for stock fraud. I think the people of New Jersey are smarter than that," he said.

So how did Christie get

So how did Christie get chosen for the US prosecutor position in the first place? Fundraising for George Bush or some other reason?

One day story

Paul Mulshine and Dick LeAsshole got their fifteen minutes of fame courtesy of Chris Christie. This story will be old news and forgotten next week by everyone except a few diehard wingnuts desperately grasping at whatever manure they can lay their paws on.

“If you’re unwilling to compete for these votes, and if you’re unable to win these votes, then you’ve got to wonder if you belong on the ballot at all." -- Chris Christie on Steve Lonegan's decision not to attend the Bergen County Republican c

No, not really. The story

No, not really. The story will drag on at low intensity and hurt his turnout. It's unfortunate, but true - and the sooner the campaign understands this, the better. Focus on the economy - because that is what people care about.

Russ...

Just write at the bottom of your column...paid for by the Lonegan/Corzine for Governor Committee.  Your post makes no sense.  Christie got the job the same way EVERY US Attorney and most every other person has gotten theirs...someone, somewhere put in a good word and recommended them.  Then it was their chance to prove themselves...his outstanding record as US Attorney speaks for itself.

Who put the good word in and

Who put the good word in and why did they pick Christie?

As far as I know his record is mostly smoke and mirrors. He prosecuted mostly black democrats and didn't do much against white Republicans. The story here in South Jersey that he went after people with low IQ's and didn't do anything against the big players and let Atlantic City go down the sewer. In this case the person took money from one place in Atlantic County and took it to another. Somehow this affected intrastate commerce so the feds pressed charges and got a plea bargain. The others here in Atlantic County were similar low-end operatives and the big players are still at it.

The only thing I hear about his record is a so-called 100% conviction rate with over 130 cases. What exactly did Christie accomplish other than stating a number?

As for the first sentence, it implies we can't say anything about Christie because it will help Corzine. That is why Republicsans are supposed to vote for all the losers they put forward. it is like a threat, vote for our creep or you will be stuck with a worse creep. That reasoning just doesn't sit well with me anymore.

Russ---smoke?

How Has the current nominee been found? Why has Frank Lautenberg been pushing for him for years? Why have Pallone and Pascrell been so concerned with deferred prosecutions when the economy is tanking? Are they auditioning for LG? Or possibly auditioning for a Senate nod when Lautenberg quits? So-called 100% conviction rate--you are funny--this is documented. I guess, don't let a facts get in the way of a hate filled "post". More Democrats than Republicans charged---dah--there are more Democrats in charge in the state--the percentages weigh out. Let AC go down the drain--I thought that stimulating growth and the economy was the Govs job? Try and be somewhat factual when you spread hate.

Christie and Kelley

Christie had no prior criminal law experience before becoming U.S. Attorney, but his brother (the one accused but conspicuously not indicted for stock fraud) raised millions for G.W. Bush. In other words, Christie got his position on the basis of questionable funds. A criminal defendant would lose these funds under RICO; Christie gets a plum appointment. Then, Christie's brother is not charged -- in fairness, the theory behind all the others' charges was ultimately rejected by the Manhattan federal court -- and the prosecutor who blessed the rejected legal theory is then given a plum monitorship. Hmmm. Oh, and as for Christie's conviction record, how many of those convictions relied upon perjury from questionable or outright lying witnesses like Luisa Medrano (see the David Della Donna case)?

Here's a question for CC: How many innocents were indicted and jailed in order to further personal political ambitions, whether they were yours or those of other people who worked for you?

WELCOME TO MELTDOWN CITY, POPULATION: CHRISTIE

Christie, however, said that he decided to broach the topic after conservative columnist Paul Mulshine's latest column "ruined my ability to enjoy my son's baseball game with a smile on my face."

What Friedman omitted:

"Mulshine also ruined my ability to enjoy my cheesefries with extra mayo, ice cream sandwiches, deepfried snickers bar and a Grand Slamwich I picked up at Denny's." Christie continued, "Though I did not enjoy them with a smile on my face, I did, in fact, eat them."

ashcroft, gonzalez, mukasey, goodling,sampson,rove.....

If the republicans want to win, cc should suspend his campaign until the cloud(s) have been lifted from his personal, political, and professional life. I'm sure ashcroft will hire him.

Well, well...

The holier than thou, one-term ex-freeholder seems to have a very thin skin.

Paul Mulshine wrote a very factual column. Did Christie rebute the facts?

Of course not.

The implosion of this lightweight candidacy has begun...

Now we know why he won't debate Lonegan. He'll spend half the debate defending the lies of his brother, Stern and other Christie cronies who are shrinking under the very scrutiny Mr. Christie used to prosecute at the US Attorney's office.

Mayor Lonegan, the true candidate with no skeletons was just excellent On The Record over the weekend as he flawlessly dealt with the core issues of the contest while Christie cries over being finalled vetted by the media.

Welcome to the real world Mr. Christie...

Vote Column "A"- All the way!

The Krispy Kreme Kandidate

Chris Christie has gone from being the ETHICS candidate to being the KRISPY KREME(TM) candidate.

"Christie said that he will

"Christie said that he will not accept any more donations from people who he appointed for federal monitoring contracts during his time as U.S. Attorney – but only because he felt the issue had become a distraction from the more important problems facing the state."

lol sounds like the congressmen that will "no longer accept funds from AIG"

damage already done krispy!

Chris Christie=Eliot Spitzer

But creepier looking.

Why is it so much more fun to watch pricks fall hard?

breaking news...Christie endorsed by Homer Simpson

Ummmmmm....donuts.

Who cares

Frankly I don't care. Jon Corzine and the Trenton establishment have to go. Democrats have been in charge for too long and it is time to give the other party a try. I realize both parties are "dirty". The same reason people voted for President Obama was because the Republicans in Washington were too established. Trenton has the Democrats.

I will see to it Jon Corzine is not re elected. He should have resigned after his high speed collision, but unfortunately it appears the news media forgot how to investigate that accident. It wasn't the fact he wasn't wearing a seat belt. It was the fact of why he was in such an "emergency". To meet Don Imus and the Rutgers basketball doesn't constitute allowing your driver to drive at 91mph up the GSP. It just shows irresponsibility and how Corzine's personal interests outweigh the safety of the citizens of our State.

OMG, I agree with Cryan

"Christie wants us to believe that in a country with more than one million lawyers the one most qualified to receive this no-bid contract is the one that let his brother off for stock fraud. I think the people of New Jersey are smarter than that," he said.

what questions or concerns

what questions or concerns did krispy really even answer or address here?

sounds like the teacher from charlie brown WOMP WOMP WOMP WOMP.

Still

Christie still has the best shot to beat Corzine.

Lonegan is a nothing and will be soundly defeated in June. The question is will Lonegan be man enough and his supporters be man enough to back the voters choice?

Christie....

has been hanging with the liberals for too
long...ONLY knee jerk liberals cry about not
being able to "enjoy my son's baseball game
with a smile on my face"...If you can't take
the heat then get out of the kitchen!!!

VOTE FOR LONEGAN FOLKS!!!

SG---what?

I think you missed the point--not surprising though. The point was that the "heat" is fine provided that its factual. Even with Lonegans weeks of lies and distortions..spending tons of money on negative radio, mailings, e-mails, etc---getting caddies like LaRossa, Grossman & Mulshine to spread his misinformation he trails Christie by 21 points. Christie 43...Lonegan 21....laughable..disgraceful...OVER.

DiMarco

libel and slander are bad things...be careful.

If Republicans want to be taken seriously, they need to be..

SERIOUS.
That means being above reproach. Not partaking in the same crap that we accuse the Democrats of.
While you might not be able to PROVE (because we don't have wiretaps) that Christie got his brother off, and rewarded those involved, IT CERTAINLY LOOKS THAT WAY. IF, as his supporters claim, that is not what happened, THEN HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN INVOLVED! HE SHOULD NOT HAVE GIVEN THE JOB TO ASHCROFT, or even have been involved with the "prosecutor" who dropped the charges. The Bible says to abstain from all appearances of evil. That would have solved alot of his problems. These are all facts that you can easily follow. And, he didn't address the whole factual story in his "rebuttal" How about we ask why Todd Christie has been pouring THOUSANDS into all the Republican county committees for several years now. And why didn't Christie come into Ocean County EXCEPT to get a $5,000-bribed democrat?

This man cannot be the nominee

He cannot handle any kind of criticism, none, zero.  He gets angry really quick.  And Lonegan is the hot head?!

This is only the beginning of what is in store for Mr. Christie, he should back out now and let someone who can handle the liberals on the Democrat side actually run and win.

Demsdont

No skeletons? Hiring illegals to do your grunt work woudl certainly count as a skeleton - or four or five. You are a joke.

SGSpin

What about mayors who run away from council meetings when confronted and say I am "going to dinner" instead of doing the job you are elected to do? Would that be considered liberal? Talk about not standing the heat. More liek taking my ball and going home - literally.

begining of the end

Now that Christie is starting to crack, and Lonegan is so far off of the reservation Corzine walks in in November

He didn't answer the $52 million dollar question.

So why did he give his former boss a $52 million dollar paycheck?

Lonegan may be "far off the reservation".

Seth Grossman, www.libertyandprosperity.org

But so are most voters these days.

Jim

It has been answered and put to bed. Get over it. I know Pemberton is not the new Roswell but come on.

No

No Mr. Grossman, most voters are not. Lonegan is hypocrite, a baiter of the worst kind. He is out of touch, and way out in left field with a few staunch supporters that think he is some kind of messiah because he wanted to outlaw spanish...he's a crackpot.

Handling Opposition & Being Successful

Lonegan's response to not getting what he wants has been to sue the state; that's not extreme?

Lonegan was the mayor of a small town with 8,000 in population; and he was relatively successful as a "big fish in a small pond." But he also filed suit 3 times against the state; the suits were either dismissed or the findings were against him .. no success there. He was something of an embarassment, in 2006, when he demanded that a Spanish language McDonald's billboard be removed in Bogota. Then he filed for a public referendum making English the official language of his municipality, which was rejected because it violated state & federal law. Sounds like a loose cannon, doesn't it?!

In 1998, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in the 9th district. In 2005, he ran for Governor in the primary .. but only came in 4th .. no success there either. All his candidacy ever means for sure, is that it's going to cost a lot of other serious Republican candidates more money to run against candidates he backs in the primary!

Abraham Lincoln's Road to the White House

Seth Grossman, www.libertyandprosperity.org

Abraham Lincoln was defeated for Congress: 1843, Defeated for Congress 1848, Defeated for U.S. Senate 1855, Defeated for Vice President: 1856, Defeated for Senate: 1858, Elected President 1860. Abraham Lincoln, like Steve Lonegan, put principle ahead of politics. That is why he was ridiculed and rejected by the established politicians of his day. But as the established politicians of both parties compromised with slave-owners to get themselves elected,  more and more Americans turned to Abraham Lincoln to restore America as a land of liberty.   And so America's greatest President was a "failure" for most of his political career. I'm sure that all of the sophisticated political insiders who are bashing Steve Lonegan now would have been doing the same to Abraham Lincoln if they were around then.

Please

Are you seriously comparing Abe Lincoln to Steve Lonegan? You have got to be delusional.

Absolutely!

Seth Grossman, www.libertyandprosperity.org

The fact the people who now run the Republican party in New Jersey can't even imagine a similarity between Abraham Lincoln and Steve Lonegan shows how clueless these "leaders" are about why and how the Republican party was created in the first place, and the kind of people those first Republicans, including Abraham Lincoln, were. But those early Republicans were extraordinary people and changed the course of the country within four years after they founded their "wingnut" movement in 1856.

He still hasn't answered the questions...

We can't afford to nominate another corrupt New Jersey politician. It is time to take our party back. Learn the facts at www.christieiscorrupt.com. While you are there, sign the petition and forward the page to all your friends.

Thanks for confirming

Thanks for confirming what I thought - yo have lost it Seth. Steve Lonegan is no Abe Lincoln. Abe Lincoln "freed" the slaves. Steve Lonegan hired illegals to do his slave work and then tried to have their natural language barred from his town. Now that is what I can amancipation. Unelectable and more like Abe Vigota than Lincoln.

call not can

sorry typo

The Lonegan Memorial

When they build The Lonegan Memorial in Washington D.C. should they leave the hairpiece and glasses on or off?

Let's have a debate about that.
