While the Jersey City mayoral race is starting to gain momentum, former mayor Bret Schundler, who has not formally kicked off his campaign but has already said that he intends to run, has been relatively quiet.
That has led to speculation that Schundler has had trouble raising money and filling out a full council slate and that he has begun to rethink whether he can pull off the same kind of upset in 2008 as he did in 1992. Some say Schundler’s feet are beginning to get cold.
Reached for comment today, Schundler said he would like to hold off on interviews until January 15th. Asked if he would rebut or clarify rumors about having a tough time campaigning, he said “I don’t want to clarify anything.”
But attorney Sean Connelly, a close Schundler ally who ran all three of his mayoral campaigns and served as Jersey City Corporation Counsel during his administration, dismissed the rumors.
“The last time I spoke to Bret was last Monday, and of course we send emails all the time. But nothing gave me any kind of concern,” he said. “I’m very pleased with the fundraising.”
Connelly did acknowledge that cobbling together a full slate has been challenging, but chalked it up to a shallow talent pool.
“The only problem I saw in the entire campaign, and Bret and I discussed this way back in February, is putting together a complete ticket. Unfortunately, sorry to say, most of the better people wouldn’t touch elected office with a 10 foot poll,” he said. “There are all kinds of people calling us up saying they want to be on our ticket. I‘m not saying they’re condemned to hell, but they’re not the type that will run on our ticket.”
Connelly said he hopes to get Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop on the Schundler ticket, but said "he hasn't given us any indication."
chundler eked out a victory in a crowded special election in 1992, after which he cobbled together alliances with key city political players to win re-election to full terms in 1993 and 1997. He left office to run for governor as a Republican in 2001, but lost to Democrat Jim McGreevey. In 2005, he ran for governor again, but lost the Republican primary to Doug Forester.
A source familiar with Schundler’s fundraising efforts said that he has banked about $150,000 for his mayoral bid and that he expects to be out-funded by his opponents. Incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy, who enjoys a good relationship with the numerous development firms doing business in the city, has over $1 million in the bank.
In a phone interview last month, Schundler said that the name recognition he earned during his nine years as mayor – more so than his two gubernatorial bids – provide for name ID that would otherwise be expensive to build.
“What I need to raise is less than others. I think if I raised $600,000 I would have a chance,” he said.
At the time, Schundler mentioned that he had six fundraising events planned for a two week period.

Schundler is a deadbeat
"A source familiar with Schundler’s fundraising efforts said that he has banked about $150,000 for his mayoral bid."
The first thing Schundler can do if he has this kind of money raised already is pay down the outstanding from his failed 2005 Primary race for governor, you know the one his wife was trying to convince NJ ELEC just to dismiss a few weeks back.
Why would anyone vote for Schundler the deadbeat when he can not even honor his old outstanding campaign debt?
He is done. Ducked the call
He is done.
Ducked the call and let his lawyer answer the question.
Funny how both the Schundler camp and the Manzo camp both answer the question of how they will win the same way.
"We Are Going To Get Steve Fulop On
Our Ticket."
If they had both got behind the Fulop movement to begin with for the betterment of Jersey City it would be over by now.
By Fulop taking himself out of the running he has only increased his net worth.
This kid is a stock worth investing in.
no surprise
schundler figured on fulop and sandy being in the race along with smith, manzo, and maybe al pine. with those odds, he might slide into the runoff with healy. but suddenly, healy's got a million bucks, fulop drops out, sandy backs down and bret faces the possibility of a real election. too much work and the possibility of another humiliating loss. the only thing worth watching will be what excuse he gives for dropping out.
Schundler won't run
Schundler is a talented guy who had a good run in JC. I think he would assume the mayors spot again if it were offered to him. But having to enter a dog fight as an underdog; that will not appeal to him. Ultimately I think he will take a pass on the race.
Go (away) Bret Go (away)!
The man who brought us Tom DeGise and Bill Gaughan wants a return to City Hall. No way. Old Machine, New Machine, Same Machine, Time Machine. Manzo v. Schundler (1992 and 1993), Healy v. Schundler (1997), and Manzo v. Healy (2004).
Fulop is Jersey City's only hope for a new day. The city's best days are still in front of it and Fulop is the one to give the city a fresh start. These has beens are just trying for another 15 minutes of fame.
If these clowns worked as hard at fixing the city as they did at courting Fulop the city wouldn't be going to hell in a hand basket.
Steve Fulop is the People's Champ!
Belly Laugh
What makes anyone think Bret is electable? Just ask anyone who works for the City how he screwed them over. Not too many will vote for him.
Bret has only banked $150k? That is less than Steve Fulop has and he's smart enough to know he hasn't the resources to go up against the machine.
Bret hasn't put together a ticket cause the only ones looking to get on a ticket are the losers and Bret knows this.
Here's an observation Bret. If you wanted to get back in you should have checked that massive ego at the door and thrown in with Steve. You tried to ride on his coattails on issues and he slammed you back in your place. You have condemned us to choose between Healy and Manzo.
Same old Bret, screwing everyone over.
Jersey City Malcontents
The hacks replying to this item are emblematic of the stagnation of the political class in Jersey City and Hudson County. The City has grown, but the same old bitter-hangers-on stand around and complain. Face the facts - Bret ran for Mayor and won 3 times. That's 3 times more than Fulop and three times more than Manzo. Under Bret, crime went down, taxes went down, property values went up, and businesses invested in the City. Under Schundler things got better in Jersey City, while the other "big urban cities" in New Jersey got worse (have you been to Newark, Paterson, or Trenton lately or took a stroll through Union City and West New York?). True - everything wasn't perfect and Bret made his share of mistakes - but he was a good Mayor - far better than his predecessors - Gerry McCann and Tony Cucci. Fulop may turn out to be a future reformer - but right now he is a little known Ward councilman with big dreams and a small resume. He has shown zero ability to forge the coalition necessary to become Mayor. Its easy to get headlines by attacking the incumbent Mayor. The same "up and comer" predictions said today about Fulop were said about Bill O'Dea, Melissa Holloway, Steve Lipski, and Bob Cavanaugh when they were Ward councilmen and attacked the Mayor in the Jersey Journal. All 3 never made it to the Mayor's office. Bret 2.0 may not catch fire in 2009 - but the fact is that when he was Mayor he helped change the City for the better.
bret got lucky
jc prospered under bret because nyc prospered under clinton and giuliani. bret just went along for the ride. and while he was riding, he gave away the water department, never objected to a tax abatement, tried to turn jc into a right-wing test lab, built himself a charter school (calling it a community center - weren't there supposed to be 5 more?), and let the city's infrastructure go to hell, knowing (or at least thinking) that he wouldn't be around to answer for it. since his two defeats (mcgreevey ftw, and forrester for the nomination) you'd hardly know he even lived in jc. how many city council meetings has he attended? how many policy statements (besides trying to take the credit for fulop's pay to play reforms) issued? no, ever the opportunist, bret thought there might be another chance to slip in when healy/manzo/fulop went at it. bet he was surprised when fulop decided not to go for it. obviously, that's why he hasn't been out campaigning. throw in obama's big win and bret must realize that his day has passed. he won't run because he can't win.
Uhhh - get a calendar Enoch
Uhhh - get a calendar Enoch - Bret was Mayor before Giuliani was elected. And he got a lot of NY businesses to move to JC while "NYC prospered." Bret never "gave away" the Water Dept - JC still owns its treatment plant and its reservoirs today. As for the charter school, it was built for about $15 mm - meanwhile the State is building schools in Hudson County for $100 mm a pop (what a bargain!). By the way, the charter school pays the debt service so it doesn't costs JC property taxpayers a dime. And there was a 2nd community center built - its on MLK Drive. Those are the facts. Like I said, Bret wasn't perfect, he made his share of mistakes, and he may indeed have a tough time running in 2009, but you shouldn't make up lies just because you don't like him. Oh - by the way - who can say today with a straight face that they are glad McGreevy beat Schundler in 2001?
bret's apologists abound - but won't help
Rudy was Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001. Bret was Mayor from 1992 to 2001. Plenty of overlap.
Do you really believe that Golden Door pays all the debt service? I have a bridge for sale - you just need to pay the debt service. But the point is - Bret used the City to get himself a school built - a real man of the people. Ironic that he had to resign from the board before he could use the kids as voucher guinea pigs.
Since I am straight and pro-choice, I can say with a straight face that I'm glad McG beat Bret. NJ didn't need or want a rightwing religious idealogue as chief executive, nor does JC.
So live in your little Schundler dream world, when he drops out of the race that's all you'll have left.
Points for blind loyalty though.
No Facts, Just Insults from Enoch and the Hudson Malcontents
You can't argue facts - so you just throw around baseless insults. Classic sign of a Hudson Malcontent.
You're right - Bret shouldn't have tried to get charter schools up and running because the Jersey City schools are just the greatest!
As for McGreevy - who cares if you are straight and pro-choice - the point is that McG was corrupt, incompetent and a disaster as governor.
Since you can't see that - it is you Enoch who lives in a bitter dream world.
boo hoo
the wall street wizard has to work for a living, so we're denied his visionary leadership.
yes, i'm crying tears of joy as i type this.
