Assemblywoman Linda Stender says she has her party's support to seek another term

Stender plans to run for re-election to Assembly seat

Still recovering from a lopsided congressional defeat to state Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Flemington), Assemblywoman Linda Stender (D-Fanwood) said today that she intends to run for re-election to the assembly in 2009.

“My immediate plan is to seek another term to the legislature, and I have great support from the state chair, my county chair, and I’ve got very good working relationships with my delegation members,” she said. “There’s a lot of important work to be done, we’re in a tough time in our economy and state and I’ll be looking forward to taking on those challenges.”

An Inside Edge report from just before the election said that a Union County Democratic official suggested that the party would try to get Stender to step aside if she lost the House race. But Stender said today that she has not felt any pressure to leave her seat.

“I chalked up a lot of those comments to the sort of heat of the campaign cycle,” she said.

State Sen. Ray Lesniak, who doubles as Union County’s foremost power broker, backed up Stender – despite his comment at yesterday’s state senate sendoff for Lance that the Republican deserved to win.

“I have a long personal friendship and admiration of Senator Lance and it had nothing to do with Assemblywoman Stender,” said Lesniak. “If she wants to run for re-election she has my support.”

Opportunity for the GOP

Draft Marty Marks for Assembly!

Yes . . . But Will Ray Endorse?

Gee, I wonder if Ray Lesniak will say that she is the best candidate and that he wants her to win?

Oh, wait . . . he sort of did!  Well he didn't exactly say she was the best candidate, but she could think that he did by implication, namely because no one else is in the race!

I'll just bet that makes her feel all warm and fuzzy after him telling the entire Senate that Lance was the best candidate in the congressional race this year, and that he had wanted Lance to win!

Lesniak

Lesniak's comments has to hurt Stender's ego quite a bit, but I don't see him preventing her re-election to the Assembly.

Stender doesn't seem like the type of person who would fit in well down in Washington. Lance seems more like the "statesman" (or "statesperson") that belongs in Washington. It's all about the gravitas...

What are the odds Lesniak wants to keep Stender in the Assembly to prevent one of his other local adversary Dems from taking her seat? If they are true "enemies", is the devil you know better than the devil you don't know?

Stender is tainted

by not going with the Obama flow. If she could control her campaign, it shows a leadership problem.

time to step aside

been there done that. she is toast.

Republicans

Almost impossible district for Republicans, but with Linda running a horrid CD 7 race and many Plainfied ticked off at Green because of Muhlenberg closing, who knows? Who do the Republicans have? Sal Badabing Bonacorso in Clark? Marty Marks in Scotch Plains? Maybe Mayor Grebunka of Linden?
