Bergen County Clerk Kathe Donovan, who just won her fifth five year term as county clerk last month, does not rule out the possibility of becoming a candidate for Lieutenant Governor next year.
But she’s not running for it.
“First of all you don’t run for it. The way I understand the law is people select you after the primary,” she said.
Donovan, a moderate Republican, is considered a strong contender to become a running mate after the primary. She was the top county-wide vote getter in Bergen – a must-win county for statewide Republicans – despite the county’s increasingly blue trend. And she’s the only county-wide Republican left there, a holdover from 20 years ago, when Republicans dominated.
So while Donovan may not be running, she’s not ruling the possibility out either.
“I guess we’ll see what happens down the road,” she said. “I’m not running for Lieutenant Governor. I am getting sworn into my new term as county clerk.”
