Citing the need for the state party to follow the national party’s lead and start renewing itself, state Sen. Joe Pennacchio (R-Montville) today called on Republican State Chairman Tom Wilson to resign.
“Soon we will have a new spokesperson leading our RNC. It is imperative that New Jersey Republicans waste no time in following suit,” he said in a press release this morning. “Our recent overwhelming losses reinforce the urgent need to change leadership and create a new direction with a purpose and direction for our party.”
Pennacchio, a dentist by trade, has been publicly critical of his party’s leadership ever since they refused to back his U.S. senate bid, instead running through a series of potential choices before settling on Goya heir Andy Unanue and ultimately former Rep. Dick Zimmer. Pennacchio has publicly seethed about the perceived slight, giving up his delegate spot at the Republican National Convention because he didn’t want to “party with the party leaders” who he felt pushed him aside. But up to this point, Pennacchio has kept his criticism vague, refusing to single anyone out by name.
"One can argue that Mr. Wilson has put forth his best effort. I disagree. Regardless, it is not efforts but results that we must hold our State Chairman to,” said Pennacchio “Continued losses over his tenure and lack of a unified message of purpose and direction leads to the reasonable conclusion that immediate leadership change is warranted and necessary."
Pennacchio sounded a familiar but unrealized theme in Republican circles in recent years: expanding the party’s appeal beyond middle and upper-class white voters.
"Of particular disappointment is the failure of our party's chairman to recognize the importance of reaching out and expanding our party's diversity. Mr. Wilson's cavalier answer to a press observation of our lack of diversity at our recent National Republican Convention, 'Our hardcore party activist are predominately middle class white New Jersey', showed a lack of understanding to one of our party's core problems,” said Pennacchio. “The statement went against the efforts of many of us including past Governors Kean and Whitman, who sought a broader tent and a more inclusive Republican Party. The statement showed a political indifference or worse, a Republican elitism, an unfortunate perception which many both in and out of our party believe.”
Wilson is up for reelection to his chairmanship post in June, just after the gubernatorial and assembly primary election. In a phone interview, Pennacchio said that he will not seek Wilson’s post, but he does have some people in mind who he will support for it.
“I already have by soapbox. I’m a state Senator. But as much as I’m a state senator, I’m a party leader and would like to see change and I’m not embarrassed about saying so," said Pennacchio in a phone interview.
One name Pennacchio floated: political consultant George Dredden, who helped run his U.S. Senate campaign. Dredden is former executive director of the National Black Republican Council of New Jersey.
Wilson could not immediately be reached for comment.

Sore Loser...
I'm not a Tom Wilson fan and I like George Dredden, but Jersey Joe is a real class A Sore Loser. He's more bitter than Hillary was after Obama beat her.
Hey Joe,
You ever think you lost because of yourself? You had basically equal county lines, many more months to campaign, and a low turnout Republican primary. Yet you couldn't even convince your own conservative base, let alone primary voting R's that you were ready for prime time.
I wonder what your reaction would be if other Republicans called on sore losers who just happen to be career back-benchers to resign?
Let Wilson finish his term and face the party come June, if he decides to run again.
totally pointless
I like George too but my problem here is the utter uselessness of Pennacchio caling for a new chair now when the process would have to be repeated in about 6 months.
That kind of duplication of hostilities helps no one. If Joe has something to say, he should just say it and spare us the drama.
Wilson is a lame duck.
If we want any hope in 2009, he should go now. Otherwise we will be flapping about and go into the 2009 General Election with 5 months of organization.
Wilson needs to go!
I do not know if its sour grapes with Jersey Joe, I voted for him since I thought Murray was a nonstarter and Zimmer was barely alive.
However Wilson has never impressed me. I think Wilson's comment at the convention about us not caring about urban areas since we were a "suburban" party was amateur at best and stupid at worst...
George would be a good pick.
I think that Jersey joe was just throwing out names but, George Dredden would be a good choice. Hes smart, Dedicated, experienced and a straight arrow unlike our current chairman...
Wilson gets his comeuppance
I moved to New Jersey knowing it was a Blue state and all the corruption that entails. However I never would have expected that the GOP would be "Democrat-lite" like under Wilson's leadership. His flagrant use of lobbyists and consultants that will kick money back to him is embarrassing. He is content to lose in NJ as long as he can make a buck of it.
Lets look over Wilson's mistakes...
Estabrook, Unanue, Zimmer...Wilson backed all of them over Pennacchio, a sitting member of his party. All of them were embarrassments to the party.
So?
So what is wrong with representing the white vote? My position is that the Republican party is acting too much like the Dems. The first idea floated was getting Michael Steele to lead the Republican party....where is my representation? Who are we kidding that we would ever get the minority vote? And by the way you are not a racist for saying that! The Republican party better start focusing on the majority of people who don't vote and educate them that if they don't start to get involved then our country will end up like this state and I don't think anyone would want that.
go George Go
what a great guy and rising star in the Republican Party.
go George Go
what a great guy and rising star in the Republican Party.
Sdem...
The problem is that Wilson is making the Party Democrat clones in policy and position not in outreach. I feel the the GOP can bring the message of smaller, more efficient government to the very people who need it the most, the Working poor that have been used and tossed out every election cycle by the democrats.
I also looked up this George Dredden guy, He sounds much better than Wilson; at least hes willing to fight on principle.
Dredden must me better then Wilson
Considering what moronic decisions we got under the Wilson leadership, Dredden has to be a better choice.
Crowley for GOP Chair
Take a business approach to running campaigns and raise baby raise $$$$$
Wilson Is a Good Chair
You guys have no idea about how good Wilson has been for the GOP. Without him, who would be our elected members?

"Estabrook, Unanue, Zimmer...Wilson backed all of them over Pennacchio, a sitting member of his party. All of them were embarrassments to the party."
And yet, Joe still lost to Zimmer and would've lost to either Estabrook or Unanue had they stayed in the race. What does that tell you?
Joe Finocchio needs to stop crying like a woman and get over it already. He was a terrible statewide candidate and always will be. He needs to keep his mouth shut and stay in his LD where he belongs.

Dino...
I would have to point out that Jersey Joe beat the millionaire princess Estabrook in her home county, Destroyed Andy "twelve steps are for quitters" Unanue, and finally after so many opponents that sucked away money Wilson chose Zimmer specifically to beat Joe not win the general.
I Learned Something New Today...
Imagine my astonishment at learning that there's a Republican Party in New Jersey!
Thanks for the news.
Crowley for Chair Sounds good...
Even better would be Mark Meyerowitz of West Orange, whose been a great club leader in a town that is the home of the most popular Jersey Democrat
Are You Serious?
"I would have to point out that Jersey Joe beat the millionaire princess Estabrook in her home county, Destroyed Andy "twelve steps are for quitters" Unanue, and finally after so many opponents that sucked away money Wilson chose Zimmer specifically to beat Joe not win the general."
Okay, really? Seriously??? First of all, no he didn't, second of all, no he didn't and finally, no matter who won the nomination, a Republican candidate was not winning in a state that hasn't elected a Republican to the US Senate since 1972 in an anti-Republican year in a safe Democrat state. Let's not be delusional here, okay?
Furthermore, it is not Tom Wilson's fault that a Republican hasn't won a senate seat in 36 years. He gained control of the party when it started heading south after the party abandoned the state's urban centers and gave machine Democrats carte blance to get re-elected on cruise control. That can't be left on Wilson's doorstep. He can only work with the cards he's dealt.
Maybe, if Pennacchio didn't attack Tom Kean Jr. during the '06 campaign like the arrogant egomaniac he is, he wouldn't have fallen out of favor with the party in the first place. Far as I'm concerned, he got what he deserved and I would never support him for any office on any level.

Helen Rosales from Elizabeth for state Chair.
Tom Wilson
Tom Wilson has to be the most inept, unproductive, unsuccessful state chair in the country for either party.
I wouls rather be the Utah Democratic state chair than Tom Wilson!

Tom Wilson
has to go.
Einstein's definition of insanity... ya know?
Yudin, too
I like Pennachio's logics. I mean, if Zimmer won, Wilson would get credit, amirite? So if Zimmer loses, then BLAME WILSON, amirite?
Extending these logics, Yudin should do the classy thing and resign in Bergen county. Amirite?
hmmm....
Didn't Pennacchio criticize Murray Sabrin for doing the same thing? I agree that Sabrin's timing was ridiculous, but c'mon, Jersey Joe... No flip-flopping.
Look at the Facts
I doubt Jersey Jow would have done worse in the general election than Dick Zimmer.
People like Tom Wilson keep pushing for so-called moderate candidates who are said to be electable and they keep losing by double-digits. In fact, the only "moderate" Republican to win over 50% in NJ statewide in thirty years is Tom Kean who at least reached out to conservatives instead of the Whitman approach of freezing them out.
Yeah, maybe New Jersey isn't going to elect the kind of candidate that gets elected in Alabama, but Republicans are never going to get elected anywhere if they run merely as quasi-Democrats and never offer a real difference.
