CRANFORD - Union County College President Thomas H. Brown said today that he did respond to Union County Republican Chairman Phil Morin by letter and email regarding his complaint that today’s rally was against the school’s own regulations.
“He got a letter,” said Brown while overseeing preparations to host President Bill Clinton on behalf of Democratic Congressional candidate Linda Stender.
“He got an email. He doesn’t read his emails.”
Morin complained that he tried to rent a school facility to host a Republican event in 2006, but was verbally turned down because it was for partisan political purposes.
Brown, however, said that Morin never did file a request, and that he’d be happy to host Republican events for Morin in the future.
“Anybody is entitled to come here,” he said. “I’d be happy to have him here with President Bush.”
Taking the podium during the run up to Clinton’s speech, Democratic State Chairman Joe Cryan defended Brown, and echoed the President’s offer with a less veiled partisan jab.
“I’ve got to tell you, the Republicans gave Tom a pretty hard time about having this rally here. In fact the Republican chairman was screaming that there’s no reason to have a rally here. I want to let everyone know that on behalf of equal time… if Leonard Lance wants to bring in George Bush today and stand with him the way he has, we’d be happy to pay for it, the State Democratic Party.”
