Stender says ads are 'comparative,' not negative

ISELIN -- If only third graders could vote.

Talking to PolitickerNJ.com before addressing a group of senior citizens with State Sen. Joseph Vitale (D-Woodbridge), Stender said that ads run waged by her opponent and the third party groups that support him -- rhyming her last name with "Spender," "truth bender" or putting anti-Stender lyrics to the tune of Yankee Doodle -- are insulting to the voters of the 7th Congressional District.

"I'm very popular amongst the third grade set because of the nursery rhyme nature of the campaign that's been run. The kids are always happy to see me, because they know the ads," she said.

Stender's ads against State Sen. Leonard Lance (R-Flemington) have been primarily negative, drawing parallels Lance to President Bush. She prefers the word "comparative."

"I think we've been very comparative in our campaign - the differences, and the fact that we believe that this district simply cannot tolerate a future like the last eight years, and that Leonard Lance is going to be more of the same," she said. "What's kind of interesting to me is that when I'm out at the train station, the things I hear from people is that they comment on the negative ads that have been run against me, and the nursery rhymes, and the fact that it's recycled, and that they tried it two years ago."

Stender's race is too close to call. The only recent independent poll taken shows it neck-and-neck. For what it's worth, Lance has racked up all of the newspaper endorsements made so far in the district, even though Stender won over the editorial boards in her fight against U.S. Rep. Mike Ferguson last year.

Stender suggested that may be because the press loves the underdog. And Lance, at least in terms of campaign funds -- $1.2 million raised this campaign cycle (much of which went towards a primary, which Stender didn't have to fight) to Stender's $2.39 million. As of October 15th, however, they were close in the amount each had on hand -- $304,481 for Stender, and $274,817 for Lance, who still has $122,486 in campaign debt.

"I think he's been the underdog in this race, which is kind of funny because of the way the district is drawn. This is, after all, a Republican district," she said. "I think that endorsements don't vote, just like signs don't vote."

So Stender took the opportunity today to talk to about 60 seniors about a senior citizen rent control bill that Lance voted against in the Senate in a party-line vote.

"Who are we going to take care of? Do we take care of our most vulnerable, our seniors, our children? That's not what's been happened in the last eight years," Stender told the gathering. "On this issues, it shows a big difference between me and my opponent, where he would turn his back on you. "

The bill, which was sponsored in the Assembly by former Assemblyman Neil Cohen before his sudden resignation, has not yet passed in that body.

Update: Lance Campaign Manager Amanda Woloshen issued the following response:

"Continuing the false desperate attacks Linda Stender's campaign is now trying to use scare tactics to mislead seniors. The fact is seniors should be very concerned about Linda Stender. She told the New York Times that she wants to increase taxes on Social Security and raise the eligibility age. Leonard Lance is the only candidate who opposes higher taxes on seniors and these false partisan attacks are one of the reasons that every major newspaper has rejected Stender and endorsed Leonard Lance for Congress."

Linda Stender is a Spender...and

an empty suit...and a proud member of the pension padding, corrupt, take-care-of-us-first, Union County Democrat machine. Talk about a retread - didn't STender try to get elected last time by running against Bush (and that was against a guy who actually voted with Bush). Guess that's what you do when you can't point to anything you've done that demonstrates who you're going to take care of...

Stender is as useful as a...

one legged man in an ass kicking contest. She is a pandering sell out like Barack Hussein(o no I am a racist now) Obama

She sounds like a left-wing nut.

If Lance wins, it's because of Stender's campaign, not Lance's. Her ads are designed to make conservative voters who would normally never vote for a guy like Lance to support him. His ads, on the other hand, are designed to tell conservative voters NOT to vote for him. Fortunately for Lance, she has more money than he does.

Stender & Lance

You know, in the scheme of things - and especially for NJ politics, Lance is a pretty honorable, decent man.  In all the years he's been knocking around politics, you won't find one person on either side of the aisle who will say he's ever lied to them or been disrespectful.  The guy takes his role as a public servant very seriously.  Which brings us to Stender.  Based on the campaign stuff she's put out about him - mostly bizarre attacks that aren't anywhere near reality in portraying Lance - she has some serious problems as a human being.  Either she's just blindly accepting bad advice from overeager campaign advisors with little creativity who just stick to the attack gameplan, or she is a wretched, vile person.  It would be nice to think it's the former - that she's just a hack - rather than a wretched excuse for a human.  But who knows?  Either way, her tactics reveal much about her to the voters of the 7th district.  These voters actually have the ability to select a person who isn't a hack (that would be Stender), and isn't some right-wing carpetbagger with apparently serious personal problems (that would be the wonderful incumbent), but a guy who appears to be a solid, humble, public servant.  He may not be the greatest campaigner, but he's certainly not going to embarass the district in DC.  Quiet the contrary, he'll do an honorable job representing the people.

Unless I missed it

Stender hasn't had an ad on her record. They have been anti-Lance or what she would do.

Stender isn't that popular in Union County and this translates into people voting against her rather than being pro-Lance.

She gives party hacks a bad name.

Rhyming Game

So let me get this straight. . . Linda Stender, who runs ads about the "Lance Dance," is complaining about Lance running Stender/Spender ads.

Linda, two words. . . STOP WHINING!

STEP BACK

The campaign ads of both Leonard Lance and Linda Stender should be irrelevant at this point.

Voters in the 7th district as well as in the nation as a whole must take a step back and take a stand for what they believe in. Anybody who watched the New Jersey Channel 12 debate this past week should have been able to readily see that both Leonard Lance and Linda Stender are more typical politicians that don't have an ounce of change anywhere in them. When asked to address the simple question of whether they would raise taxes, neither candidate came even remotely close to answering the question. Both tiptoed around the topic and instead talked about energy independence and spending abroad, important topics of discussion, but utterly irrelevant to the question nonetheless. Yet typically most voters would vote for either one of these candidates, which is absurd seeing as voters claim that their issue of most concern is the economy. Even when neither candidate cannot answer a simple question that is essential to their validity as a candidate and essential to the future of the country's economy, voters typically still vote for them.

We can only hope that this year's NJ-7 congressional race will turn out differently. The only candidate that has been open to answering any and all questions about the issues and his plans for the future is the Independent candidate Bridgewater Councilman Michael Hsing. He openly discusses his plans for the economy, environment, war, healthcare, abortion and more. Furthermore, Hsing's camp has raised a substantial war chest that is currently above 150,000 dollars, and Hsing has garnered tremendous support among crowds of undecided and independent voters while also drawing great support from thousands of registered Republican and Democrat voters.

Polling showed that Michael Hsing was at 9% more than a month ago, even before he had begun any serious monetary campaigning. Estimates on Hsing's polls now run anywhere from 14%-18%. The recent Monmouth University poll is severely inaccurate with regards to Hsing's actual support level, as anybody that has actually read the poll would know. Hsing's name is only included in the poll twice in 12 questions, 6 of which deal directly with the NJ-7 race. Furthermore, neither the Monmouth poll, nor the Stender poll take into account the fact that Hsing will grab 4-5% of total votes just because of tremendous asian-american support in the district.

Make an intelligent choice in November and decide whether or not you want to hand another congressional seat over to another run of the mill politician. Think about it.

Comment on Eyes Open

Is "Eyes Open's" wordy comment Michael Hsing's thrifty version of a 30-minute Obama infomercial?

I had to check out Hsing's website after that post, directly pulled from his website on ways you can help Hsing; "Post Blogs on the Web" I guess that person above is taking it to heart.

Third graders don't vote

As exciting to the third grade set Stender may be, they aren't pulling the lever on Tuesday.

If I could vote in the 7th district election, I would - FOR Lance. He is as sincere as they come and will do an excellent job for my mother and father in law - who can vote for him and will. Go Lance!

OE <- voting for Chris Myers for third district for the very same reason - sincerity.
