House members who voted against original bailout plan not yet won over

With the House likely to vote on the revised bailout package tomorrow, six of the seven New Jersey congressmen who voted against it on Monday have either not decided or not indicated how they will vote tomorrow.

Only Scott Garrett (R-Wantage) has given any inkling as to how he’ll vote.  On Fox News this morning, he said that the bill has barely changed.

“Basically we’re getting the exact same bill with some pork added to it to sweeten things up.  And that doesn’t make matters better. It really makes matters worse,” he said.

Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-Morristown) could not be reached for comment, but Politico named him as one of 12 House members who could switch.  The story reported that he reversed his vote from yes to no on the original bill at the last minute.

Steve Rothman (D-Fair Lawn) still hasn’t made a decision.  His Chief of Staff, Bob DeCheine, said that Rothman is “reviewing what the Senate did yesterday and talking with lots of folks.”  In explaining his no vote on Tuesday, Rothman said the bill didn’t do enough to provide relief for local banks and homeowners and ignored infrastructure investment.

Jason Galanes, press secretary for Frank LoBiondo (R-Vineland), said that the Congressman was “watching the negotiations and Senate vote yesterday closely,” but to his knowledge had not come to a decision.

Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson) has also not come to a decision, according to press secretary Caley Gray.

Staffers for Donald Payne (D-Newark) and Chris Smith (R-Hamilton) could not immediately be reached for comment.
