Lautenberg accepts a debate invitation

U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg has accepted a debate with opponent Dick Zimmer on NJN.

But the debate is set for November 1st.

That led Zimmer’s campaign to accuse Lautenberg of “running out the clock,” having turned down at least 10 prior invitations.

Sound familiar?

Democratic primary challenger Rob Andrews made the call for Lautenberg to debate a central part of his campaign.  He ultimately got the Senator to agree to do two broadcast debates, both shortly before the election – one on the radio, and one on NJN on a Friday night.  And like Zimmer, the Andrews campaign responded that it wasn’t enough.

Zimmer campaign Special Counsel Randy Mastro, who was brought on to the campaign  try to get Lautenberg to debate, demanded that the Senator participate in a debate broadcast on CBS on October 19th.

“I am astounded that Senator Lautenberg refuses to come out of hiding until November.  His campaign has been giving lip service about his commitment to holding face-to-face debates with Dick Zimmer since the primary, but with less than 5 weeks until Election Day, Senator Lautenberg has failed to tell voters why he deserves another six years in Washington,” said Mastro.  “ Zimmer has accepted invitations to more than twenty debates and candidate forums, and the one and only debate Lautenberg has accepted is in November.”

Lautenberg spokeswoman Julie Roginsky said that the national financial crisis has caused Congress – which usually recesses in mid-September during election years – to expand its schedule.

She also denied the Zimmer campaign’s contention that Lautenberg would not agree to debate any time before November 1st.  The campaign, she said, will shortly announce other debates.

"Zimmer might be better off debating himself.  First he criticizes Senator Lautenberg's use of special appropriations for worthy New Jersey programs, then he attacks the Senator for not getting enough.  Then he whines about not having debates, and complains when we agree to them,” she said.

Dirty little secret

is that no one outside of the NJ political community gives a rat's *** about debates.  Find one voter who will say "I was going to vote for him until I heard he was not debating his opponent".  In this information age, debates just become a meaningless repetition of positions we all know already.  But each election, someone thinks its a good strategy to push for them.  Amazing

Well said dc

Every time someone talks about debates, a little song goes off in their heads about people "going to the candidates debates" and suddenly they think this 40 year old melody has some relevance to today's Internet world.

dcdem I am one voter

dcdem it is not about the debate it about the sense of unfairness. We don’t need to win this way.

This is the third time in recent years that our party has done this type of non-sense. The first time was when McGreevy waited till September to resign so to avoid a special election. Then, the second time with Torricelli dropping out of the race at the last minute despite his Federal corrupt charges(and even going to the State Supreme Court to defend the last minute switch).

This third time we are going to hold on to a Senate seat by putting in a placeholder (Lautenberg). In other words, everyone knows what the leadership has planned next spring. Lautenberg is going to step down because of some illness or the like and then the Governor gets to pick the next (Dem) senator.

I turned a deaf ear - blind eye the last two times but this time I am not going along with this and will not vote for Lautenberg.

It's no excuse..

Voter apathy and enabling this sort of complete disregard and disrespect to the voters is exactly what you shouldn't be doing.

This is pathetic and unexecusable. On a saturday night 3 days before the election, unbelievable.

New Jersey voters are getting slapped in the face and urinated on by the Lautenberg campaign. And they are letting it happen to themselves.

Truly sad.

Why Doesn't Lautenberg...

Why doesn't Frankie just wait until November 5?
