Lonegan thinks Republicans should fight ethics reform proposals

Conservative activist Steve Lonegan said the Republicans’ tentative support of Gov. Corzine’s ethics reform plan is a mistake.

While more mainstream Republicans have cast the reforms as the Democratic realization of what the GOP has been pushing for all along, Lonegan – a staunch opponent of campaign finance laws in general who’s considering running for governor next year– thinks they should be fighting against them.

“Republicans should get their act together and go after this with a vengeance, because this is an assault on liberty,” he said.  “I think it’s an all-out assault on freedom of speech, freedom of association and the whole American system and tradition of open and competitive elections.”

Lonegan last year made headlines for threatening to file a lawsuit against the state’s pay-to-play laws that Corzine’s reforms would strengthen.  And this year, he became on of the most outspoken opponents of the state’s Clean Elections program, which provided public funds for candidates.

Lonegan said that the only thing the reforms would accomplish would be to make running for public office less accessible to ordinary New Jereyans, while not changing for candidates with the ability to self-fund.

“The voters don’t need Jon Corzine determining what’s right and what’s wrong in their eyes,” he said.  “We don’t need Jon Corzine telling us how to live our lives, how to campaign.”

Lonegan’s protests against public campaign funds and campaign finance reform sometimes bring eye-rolls from election reform proponents, who note that Lonegan received matching funds from the state in his 2005 gubernatorial bid. But Lonegan said that -- as long as there are restrictions on how and where he can raise money --  then he has to play the hand he’s given.

If Lonegan runs for the Republican nomination next year, he said he’ll seek matching funds again.  And he makes no apologies for taking them three years ago.

“That campaign’s matching funds were the best money New Jersey taxpayers have ever spent,” he said.

arrogant ass

“That campaign’s matching funds were the best money New Jersey taxpayers have ever spent."

I'm not forgetting about Lonegan's lawsuit team up with soon to be convicted corruptionist Dennis Oury. And I'm sure no one will forget about the hypocrisy of Lonegan - ripping illegal immigration but then hiring a few of his own to put together sings..

You have it backwards

At least there is one person out there standing up for the Constitution and right to free speech protected by the First Amendment. The proposals are going to move a lot of people out of the election process, including those who might otherwise run for office. The only people that will be able to raise any significant money to run for office or challenge an incumbent will be the rich or those backed by unions.

Lonegan is also standing up for the taxpayers because these ridiculous proposals by Corzine will only move more towards taxpayer funded incumbency protection campaigns.

Republicans should be following Lonegan's lead on this, but then again why should they start standing up for something now?

Perception is reality

I like Mayor Lonegan; he genuinely speaks his mind.
However, his arguments against public funding for legislative candidates are hollow when we consider that he accepted $800,000 in public taxpayer money for a primary in which he lost 92% of the vote. (or, he took $800,000 to win 8% of the vote - take your pick). If the Mayor is against public funding he should refuse it himself, and, if he takes it for himself, he should support it for others.

Taking political advice from Lonegan

Is like taking driving directions from a blind man.

What I want to know re: Lonegan

is why this site continues to give him a platform. It's not just Lonegan's credibility, but this site's, that's on the line, as long as TPTB at PolitickerNJ continue to do that.

that's funny..

I was wondering the same thing but for different reasons.

This site gives partisan people a forum on opinions for both sides, but seriously is the republican representation reduced to Michael Patrick Carroll and Steve Lonegan?

I know they had Christie Whitman as the "moderate" republican (Not exactly a great example, if you ask me..sure she was a moderate but even most "insider" moderate Reps aren't fans of her)

Now we're stuck with Lonegan and Carroll..geez you think you could get at least one not so extreme conservative on here to represent republicans? This is NJ..no shortage of moderate republicans in this state.

Anyway Blue Guy clearly doesn't know who owns this site..or who his father is.
