Corzine: If Lance was so independent, he would have switched parties

Governor Corzine today said that, if state Sen. Leonard Lance really is so different from President Bush, he hasn’t demonstrated it enough.

“I think there are a lot of things that Leonard Lance would agree with President Bush on. I don’t think he is turning his back on the national security policies. I think, if I hear it right, he has generally been on the same side as the president with regard to regulatory policy – that would be no regulation or limited regulation,” said Corzine at a bill signing in Princeton. “There are differences, but if there were such sharp differences I think he would have changed parties. I haven’t seen that happen.”

Corzine’s comments come just days before President Bush comes to Colts Neck to raise money for Lance, who as of June 30th only had $81,000 on hand to Democrat Linda Stender’s $1.2 million, along with fellow Republican candidate Chris Myers.

The average person parachuting into the 7th District from out-of-state might have a hard time figuring out which party Lance belongs to. His campaign commercials don’t mention that he’s a Republican, emphasizing instead his independence and environmental record. And in one of his campaign commercials, instead of supportive quotes from local Republican luminaries, he quotes Senate President Dick Codey (D-West Orange) saying “’We’d be better off as a state and a society’ with more like Leonard Lance.”

Lance’s Web site doesn’t put President Bush’s fundraising for him on its events calendar – though you will find it prominently featured on his Democratic opponent’s Web site.

Corzine said that the onus is on Lance and Myers to explain exactly how the policies they support are different from Bush’s ideology.

“The policies are the ones that have us in the fix that we see on the front pages of the papers and in the media each and every day. I think people who are running on the platform that President Bush is supportive of and has been supportive of have to explain why they’re different.”

Lance Campaign Manager Amanda Woloshen outlined some examples of Lance’s purported independence.

“Leonard Lance is an independent and has been recognized as one by Republicans and Democrats alike. He’s been called the strongest environmentalist in the legislature by Jeff Tittell of the Sierra Club, he’s pro-choice and has opposed his own party when they tried to spend and bond too much. And Leonard Lance has led the opposition to Governor Corzine’s plan to raise tolls,” she said. “Meanwhile, Linda Stender will be a rubber stamp for the liberal McGreevey/Corzine tax and spend policies that have hurt New Jersey working families.”

Where's Corzine?

Since Corzine's almost never in NJ, how'd you guys get a quote from him? E-Mail? IM? Text message?

The more Corzine talks-up Stender, the more likely she is to lose.

Switch Parties?

Why? So he would be in the Democrat Party with Wayne Bryant? John Lynch? and George Nocross?

So he can hang out at rest-stops on the Garden State Parkway with McGreevey and John Adler?

Hmm

Now there's an ignorant poster.

Heck, Stender

fails to admit that the Dems control congress. She wants to change things in Washington. Which party is she in?

Corzine needs to think before he speaks

Just because someone tries to have a moderate view and an open mind when making decisions does not mean they should have to switch party affiliations. I don't think that because Bush is coming to help fundraise for Lance and other Republicans doesn't mean those Republicans must share the same views with Bush.  If politicians only stuck to one set of ideals then nothing would get accomplished except for constant argument.  I applaud Lance's commitment to getting things done by working with politicians across party lines. With Corzine gone all the time I'm surprised he knows what is going on in the State legislature.  Because someone has a certain affiliation with a party it doesn't mean they must share all their views, just their core beliefs.

7th District

Simple Race

Lance / Ficsal conservative

vs

Stender / party partisan tax raiser

RECORD

Lance suied Governor Whitman over the pension borrowing.
Thanks to his efforts , there is a ballot question this fall about voter aproval for borrowing.
Anyone who knows Trenton Poltics knows Lance always was tough on spending and the out of control borrowing.

Stender voted YES for every tax hike as a Union County Freeholder and as an Assemblywomen.

A big supporter corrupt Schools Construction Corporation.

Supported McGreevey's tax increases on hotels, cell phones, dry cleaning inher first year in Trenton!

The choice for congress in clear on the fiscal issues.

Stender ran against the war in 2006, that is situation is clearly improved.

The economy is the issue and Lance has a better record.

Shall We Dance With Leonard Lance?

I think Leo from the 7th should make a youtube version of the Foghat song to boost the campaign.

Every time Linda speaks...

a little bit of McGreevey / Bryant / Coniglio / James / Corzine comes slopping out her taxpayer-suckling lips.

Very Disappointing

Whether or not I agree with Corzine's policy initiatives, I think he is generally a good guy -- fair-minded with reasonable opinions. But Lance is the best there is -- he is the classiest, most even-handed and knowledgable public servant we can offer DC. His legislative record truly reflects the best interests of the citizens of NJ -- a social moderate, stalwart environmentalist and a consistent, fiscal conservative. To try to taint him as a Bush lackey is just ridiculous. I am disappointed to see Corzine sinking so low in the name of partisan politics. It will make me discount future comments. (P.S. I'm a true independent who actually contributed to Stender last time around. In all objective fairness, she is no longer the better candidate for this office.)
