Congressional candidate Michael HsingBridgewater Councilman Michael Hsing, a Republican-turned-independent to run for Congress in the 7th District, doesn’t see his role in the race as a spoiler for Republican Leonard Lance. Rather, he sees himself as a pinch hitter coming in to relieve Lance, who he doesn’t think can win.
“If I compare Stender and Lance, certainly I will support Lance. But I know Lance probably will not win. If I believed Lance would win, I would not challenge him,” said Hsing. “He doesn’t have fire in the belly, and I have at it.”
Hsing pointed to what he said was Lance's less-than-impressive 40% victory in the Republican primary (although he did face six opponents).
“I can get it done. I’m really the reliever coming in at the 9th inning and trying to save the game.”
A Stender-commissioned poll last week showed her running three points ahead of Lance – 36-33% -- while Hsing came in with 9% of the vote that would presumably belong to Lance. Tom Abrams, an anti-war candidate, polled at 2%.
And Lance isn’t likely to drop out and make way for Hsing.
Hsing’s campaign manager – his 21-year-old son, Arthur – acknowleged that his father is taking votes away from Lance for the time being. But he doesn’t expect it to stay that way.
“While we may be taking votes from Lance right now, what we intend to do is take votes from both,” said Arthur, highlighting his father’s economic plan and his work towards preserving “green space” and instituting “smart growth” in Bridgewater. “Nine percent is not our goal. Ten or 15 percent is not our goal. We have a strategy.”
Hsing shocked political observers when it was revealed that he actually had more cash on hand than Lance as of the June 30th filing deadline, with about $100,000 to Lance’s $81,000. That will likely change after next week, when President Bush comes to New Jersey to raise money for Lance and fellow Republican congressional candidate Chris Myers.
Hsing wasn’t sure what his current total is, but estimated it at about $160,000.
“We’re shooting to get to a quarter million really soon,” he said.
If Hsing doesn’t win this race, he said, he will probably run for council again next year. Whether that will be easy is another question, since he’s annoyed establishment Republicans in Somerset County by bucking the party and going it alone. If Stender’s poll is accurate and Hsing does wind up as a spoiler for Lance (which Somerset Republican Chairman Dale Florio doubts), he could face a Republican challenge.
“I would probably run for council again, whether that would be under the Republican or independent tag, we’ll see,” he said.

I actually feel bad for Hsing...
Trying not to sound mean, I thought this article was a late entry to PolitkerNJ's April 1st edition...There were a lot of funny portions of Hsing's arguement. Great baseball analogy, usually a reliever/closer is someone people have heard of i.e. Mariano Rivera; lets be honest no one knows who Michael Hsing is. There is no way Hsing is getting 9%, he and Abrams will split the Ind. votes. I sorta wish his son would have elaborated on their magically strategy for victory. If their secret plan is bank on Hsing's environmental "green space" record, I'm fairly certain Lance has him covered in being a better environmentalist.
The funny thing is Lance and Stender have about 45 days to find out who will be the next member of Congress. Michael Hsing has about 45 days left of his political career in Somerset County.
Hsing's pessimism disappoints me
Linda Stender is a wasteful spender, so does Lance really have no chance?
Stender = McGreevey/Codey/Roberts Tool
Like taxes? Like spending? Like borrowing for operating? Like hostile business legislation? Like legislators who look the other way during scandals on State Homeland Security money? Like legislators who are on the public payroll? Like legislators who remain silent about legislators/power brokers who treat public money like a personal pocketbook (Coniglio, Wayne, James, etc)? Then by all means, make the entire country as successful as Camden and vote for Linda.
Michael Hsing gives a refreshing point of view
Michael Hsing gives a refreshing point of view to this race in the 7th, which is a microcosm of the national race between Obama and McCain. While he will mostly likely not win, his gumption and gusto will give him some attention, and that will attract more independent voters.
And he seems to have a good sense of himself, and a good sense of humor. His analogy of being called a 'pinch hitter' rather than a 'spoiler' shows some guts. Certainly from the point of view of Florio and Lance he will play the roll of 'spoiler', as much as Florio may wish to downplay that.
But from the point of view of the public---and the public loves 'mavericks' who buck the system--he is an exciting addition to a very predictable situation between two leading candidates who could not be more different than each other, but not more alike than the stereotypical Rs and Ds who run in the 7th.
And who can not be impressed by Hsing having his son run the race! Instead of hiring some politico top gun, or having the president come in to raise money for him, he has some one whose values Hsing himself helped shape. And what a learning experience for the son.
Nope, Hsing is not a 'spoiler'. He is not spoiling anything here. He's making politics smell real good again with his breath of fresh air.
Less than Impresive Victory?
Is Hsing for real? He points to Lance's 40% victory in the primary as not getting the job done and lack of fire in the belly.
Did Hsing even get 1%?
Who stopped campaigning and ran away when things got tough?
Short term memory?
Are you guys forgetting that "Spender Stender" almost kicked Ferguson's butt? Ferguson won, because the people liked him, but does the whole district like Lance? Sen. Lance should be careful, it looks like a close one.
Ferguson
Mike Ferguson is a good guy. However he did not win because people liked him... Ferguson won because he outspent Stender 2-1 in a Republican leaning district. I'd be surprised if 15% of the district knew he was their Congressman in an off year.
Michael Hsing is a sore loser and a spoiler whether he wants to you bass ackwards baseball analogies or not.
You Look Like A Politician, And You Speak Like One Too
Voters in the 7th district as well as in the nation as a whole must take a step back and take a stand for what they believe in. Anybody who watched the New Jersey Channel 12 debate this past week should have been able to readily see that both Leonard Lance and Linda Stender are more typical politicians that don't have an ounce of change anywhere in them. When asked to address the simple question of whether they would raise taxes, neither candidate came even remotely close to answering the question. Both tiptoed around the topic and instead talked about energy independence and spending abroad, important topics of discussion, but utterly irrelevant to the question nonetheless. Yet typically most voters would vote for either one of these candidates, which is absurd seeing as voters claim that their issue of most concern is the economy. Even when neither candidate cannot answer a simple question that is essential to their validity as a candidate and essential to the future of the country's economy, voters typically still vote for them.
We can only hope that this year's NJ-7 congressional race will turn out differently. The only candidate that has been open to answering any and all questions about the issues and his plans for the future is the Independent candidate Bridgewater Councilman Michael Hsing. He openly discusses his plans for the economy, environment, war, healthcare, abortion and more. Furthermore, Hsing's camp has raised a substantial war chest that is currently above 150,000 dollars, and Hsing has garnered tremendous support among crowds of undecided and independent voters while also drawing great support from thousands of registered Republican and Democrat voters.
Polling showed that Michael Hsing was at 9% more than a month ago, even before he had begun any serious monetary campaigning. Estimates on Hsing's polls now run anywhere from 14%-18%. The recent Monmouth University poll is severely inaccurate with regards to Hsing's actual support level, as anybody that has actually read the poll would know. Hsing's name is only included in the poll twice in 12 questions, 6 of which deal directly with the NJ-7 race. Furthermore, neither the Monmouth poll, nor the Stender poll take into account the fact that Hsing will grab 4-5% of total votes just because of tremendous asian-american support in the district.
Additionally, it is quite becoming that any of the users who have criticized Hsing on this site, such as backwardsjersey, and sloburn, have come up with nothing better than, "Hsing is being paid off by Stender/allies to try and steal votes form Lance" and calling him "a sore loser". The reason Congress is such a mess right now is that many voters either know nothing about the issues or have become miniature politicians and talk only about political maneuverings instead of ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUES.
Make an intelligent choice in November and decide whether or not you want to hand another congressional seat over to another run of the mill politician. Think about it.
