He’s a powerful Congressman from a different state, but House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Chares Rangel (D-N.Y.) is the issue du jour in New Jersey’s two competitive House races.
Rangel helped raise a lot of money for Democrats Linda Stender and John Adler with a fundraiser and PAC donations. Now that he’s under fire for several allegedly unethical practices, cash strapped Republicans Leonard Lance and Chris Myers think their more well-off Democratic counterparts should give the Rangel-related money back.
This isn’t the first time that Republicans have raised Rangel as a campaign issue. But the recent editorial by the New York Times calling for Rangel to step down from his committee chairmanship has made it relevant once again to the Myers and Lance campaigns.
“In 2006, Stender called on her opponent to return campaign contributions from members of Congress under ethical clouds. Yet despite reports of Rangel’s tax evasion and ethical woes, Linda Stender refuses to comment and continues to keep Rangel’s more than $71,000 in dirty campaign contributions,” said Lance for Campaign Manager Amanda Woloshen. “Voters want to know how many ethics investigations against Charlie Rangel will it take before Linda Stender condemns his actions and gives back his dirty money?”
Rangel’s National Leadership PAC has donated about $10,000 to Stender during this election cycle, while his campaign committee has tossed $4,000 her way. Rangel also hosted a New York City fundraiser last month that Lance’s campaign claims raised over $50,000 for Stender
Adler has also received $10,000 from Rangel’s PAC and $4,000 from his campaign committee.
A Myers campaign press release also said that Adler should return Rangel's money.
Stender and Adler each have well over $1 million in the bank. Returning Rangel’s money wouldn’t make much of a dent.
The Stender campaign responded with the tried and true anti-Bush attack, noting that the President is coming to the Garden State to help bail Lance and Myers out of their fundraising ruts.
“It's outrageous that Leonard Lance would have the audacity to attack us when he is proudly welcoming George Bush, arguably the worst President in American history, to New Jersey," said Stender spokeswoman Irene Lin. "Bush and Lance’s policies have helped create the energy crisis, our current economic crisis and the war in Iraq. Before Lance criticizes anyone, he should explain why he supports Bush’s failed policies and why he is taking his Big Oil money.”

George Bush
Bush, who lied us into war and spied on Americans illegally and reinstituted torture as an American value, is raising money for Lance and Myers next week.
Rangel donated a few grand and didn't pay a few grand in taxes.
How about a sense of proportion here?
Oh, and let's not forget the tens of thousands of dollars Mike Ferguson got from Tom DeLay that no Republican ever complained about.
I cannot believe
I cannot believe you just said that. The Chairman of the tax writing committee in the House does not pay his taxes, violates House rules and the law by not properly filing his disclosure forms (people have gone to jail for less), as well as other discretions and you claim it is no big deal? The average American would be thrown in jail for less. How about a sense of right and wrong? Adler has a habit of taking money and endorsements from entites who have been found to be less than law abiding. Shouldn't surprise anyone seeing he is backed by the Camden machine. And please provide me with the US court of law where George Bush is under indictment for the tings you mentioned?
Rangel v. Bush
I'll take Rangel's money over Bush's intentional misrepresentation of Iraq's possession of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons to the American people that has led to the deaths of over 5,000 Americans.
Which do you value more the oc? Rangel's unpaid taxes or Bush's careless disregard for 5,000 American lives?
Rangel's control apartments empire!
Do not forget these apartments on top of other violations. This guy is a Democrat cheater, that's why our cheating Democrats on this page do not think there is anything wrong with him. Yes, blame it on Bush. What was that? Not paying your personal taxes and owning rent control apartments could be blamed on Bush. No consequences whatsoever! Where is the signing sheet to the Democratic Party? I wanna be a cheater and the king of apartments too!
One Time
The day I hear of Chris Myers returning $1 of campaign contributions or denounce one Republican for ethics violations is the day I'll care about Myers constantly whining about some random issue that has nothing to do with the Congressional Representative from NJ-3.
Andy Grey...
I don't think Myers realizes he's running in NJ-3. I think he thinks he's running for State Senate.
Although, this complaint is the closest he's come to being topical.
It shouldn't matter anyway. Adler has a solid lead in Cherry Hill, he will win Burlington County, and Ocean will probably be about even. A huge win for Adler would really surprise no one at this point.
Rangel violated the law
Thank you Iamreallyaliberaldem oc for confirming that you don't care about Democrats who violate the law. Typical in NJ of the Democrat Party to turn a blind eye to their own who violate the law and thumb their noses at it. Is it in the State party's platform? But let me enlighten you on something - Bush has not given a dime to Chris Myers - or any other candidate. There is a huge difference between headlining a fundraiser and providing tainted campaign funds. Adler accepted Rangel's tainted cash. Moreover, Bush has not been accused of violating any law despite what you folks whine about. And as someone who lost a family member in Iraq, I would take Bush's assistance over Rangel's any day of the week. But keep believing that you have things locked up - the polls and the tide are turning.
