Frelinghuysen takes it one election at a time
By Matt Friedman, PolitickerNJ.com ReporterBLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- At 62, Rodney Frelinghuysen is already three years older than his father, Peter Hood Ballantine Frelinghuysen, Jr., was when he retired from Congress in 1975.
Frelinghuysen said his father left office in 1975 – when he was in his late 50s -- to spend more time with his family.
“I think it was in large part that he had five children, and I think he wanted time with family,” he said. “I grew up for 22 years of my life with my father as a member of congress, and I’m not singling out myself, but I don’t remember my father ever coming to a game or any sporting event.”
But with two grown children and a firm hold on a safe congressional district, Frelinghuysen said he’s making his decision to run for reelection cycle by cycle.
“I consider every election as a separate event. It’s been a privilege to be a member of Congress. I’d like to continue to have that privilege, but I haven’t set any parameters on the length of time,” he said.

"(Dennis) Shulman, a blind rabbi and psychologist, acted as if articles about him and his candidacy in Time magazine and the New Yorker, as well as an endorsement from the mayor of New York City, made him a celebrity and a serious threat to incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Garrett. They didn’t. Most people in his district don’t read those magazines or care what Michael Bloomberg thinks. Garrett’s district strongly leans Republican, and Bush won it with 57 percent in 2004, running more than 11 points ahead of his statewide total. Credible Republican statewide candidates always carry the district even if they are getting pounded statewide.
