When former president Jimmy Carter took the stage for a brief appearance at the Democratic National Convention, most delegates leapt to their feet and cheered.
Noticeably silent and still were a few Jewish delegates from New Jersey, who stayed in their seats.
Although at least two of them have a reputation as being quite liberal, they had a problem with Carter’s views on Israel, and most notably the book he penned on the subject: Palestine Peace Not Apartheid.
Essex County Freehold Patricia Sebold was offended by the book, but was never a fan of Carter. She was hoping and waiting with baited breath that Sen. Ted Kennedy would make an appearance tonight.
“In 1980, Carter was running for his second term. I didn’t like him then and I knew he was going to lose, so I supported Ted Kennedy. History has proven that I was correct.”
State Sen. Loretta Weinberg was actually busy talking to a reporter when Carter came on stage, but said she wouldn’t have stood up anyway.
“I’m disappointed on his stand on Palestine, and he doesn’t really see the picture for what it is,” she said.
But the most harsh condemnation of Carter came from gay rights leader Steven Goldstein, who wore a yarmulke with “Garden State Equality” – the organization he chairs – embroidered on top.
Hours before he attended the convention, Goldstein said he planned to sit the Carter appearance out.
“In the party that I love so much, in the convention that will no doubt be the greatest our party has ever had, to many Jewish voters like myself Jimmy Carter is a blight,” he said.

Makes you wonder what country their loyalty is to.
...for all the good this man has done
it's a shame some zealots cannot recognize that Carter always has worked to stabilize that region (as if anyone could do so after thousands of years of ethnic hatred). On the Palestine/Israel issue, I think he's correct. Even if he is attempting to encourage Judaeo-Christian values of acceptance and tolerance on a society bent on the destruction of "infidels".
More seriously, however, it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the region and its culture on Carter's part.
We talk about wielding "American values" on other cultures as a negative...especially when Republicans do it. But, isn't Carter doing the same thing?
This is a tough one.
A Bold Political Move by the Hero of NJ's Gays
At the National Stonewall Democrats Conference, (the national RELEVANT Democratic LGBT organization), last week in Denver, they were having a silent auction in one of the conference rooms, and one of the items to be auctioned was an autographed book by Former President Jimmy Carter. Could have maybe brought some funds in for NSD, right? Except mighty-mouth Goldsetin took it upon himself to deface the book by scribbling over the President's autograph:
"Jimmy Carter is an antisemetic pig".
How's that for mature? How's that for a powerful political statement? He is a common VANDAL! He was escorted out by hotel security. NSD is trying now to decide what action to take and whether to publicize the incident further.
Goldstein, for god's sake, for all that is holy, for the slightest spark of decency that you might still have glimmering in your dark and dismal soul... SHUT THE HELL UP!
You're embarrassing yourself and everyone else! How does Daniel put up with you? He seems so normal
