Republican congressional candidate Chris Myers today demanded that his opponent, State Sen. John Adler, remove a controversial appointee from the state parole board.
Adler is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
State Parole Board member Charles Jones drew scrutiny when he wrote a letter to Judge William J. Martini asking for leniency for Sharpe James, who he used to work for as an aide. Jones was appointed to the board in early 2006, although judiciary committee members at the time questioned whether he was qualified for the position.
In the letter, Jones said that James was unfairly prosecuted by people who wanted to “send a message.”
That letter caused Republican members of the committee to write a letter to Adler and Gov. Corzine asking that Jones should be removed from the $116,000 position.
“John Adler has an obligation to state taxpayers to convene the Judiciary Committee immediately and remove Mr. Jones from his $116,000 per year taxpayer-paid, patronage appointment,” said Myers in a press release. “Mr. Jones’ total lack of qualifications and his letter to Judge Martini are just another in a long line of embarrassing scandals courtesy of career Trenton politicians like John Adler who have fostered a culture of corruption in Trenton that has embarrassed our State and cost taxpayers billions in waste, fraud and abuse.”
Myers also criticized Adler’s silence on the issue so far. In a written statement, the Adler campaign did not say whether he would convene a meeting to remove Jones from the post.
Adler spokesman Steve Ayscue said that Myers’s outrage was “all theater and no substance.”
“While we agree that members of the State Parole Board should not be involved in federal sentencing matters, we want to know why Mayor Myers has expressed zero outrage over the fraud perpetrated on the taxpayers by his own cronies in the corrupt Burlington County Republican Machine -- fraud which continues to be probed by federal and state law enforcement authorities according to numerous news accounts,” said Ayscue. “Where is Mayor Myers' outrage over Karl Rove's refusal to testify before Congress for the fraud that has taken place in the Bush White House against the American people?”
Ayscue went on to highlight legislation Adler sponsored to strip convicted public officials of their pensions.
"Its a wee bit disingenuous for career politician Myers to discuss ethics at all given how resoundingly quiet he's been to the corruption going on right around him, in his own backyard," he said.
Not to be outdone with charges of bossism, Myers Campaign Manager Chris Russell responded.
"It's a lot a more than a wee-bit disingenuous for a wholly owned subsidiary of the corrupt Camden County Political Machine like John Adler to preach to anyone about ethics. Tell us Senator Adler, does the name Wayne Bryant ring any bells?" he said.

Chris Myers is just stupid
If he knew anything about how government operates, he'd know that you can't just remove someone for writing a letter to a judge. It's call the first amendment Mr. Mayor!!!
I think we can all agree that it was dumb for Jones to do so, definitely not grounds for removal. Chris Myers continues to run this negative campaign and the votes of NJ-3 will reject him come November, for if nothing better, pure idiocy.
Wow - Touched a nerve huh
Chris is stupid and his breath stinks so that is why voters will reject him whine, whine, whine....
If you think this is bad, wait until the thousand other shoes drop on the Senator from Norcross...
Ohhh, and I can't wait for the Wayne Bryant trial to get started - didn't his colleague, both in the Senate and county, John Adler vote for the very same things that Bryant will go to jail for? Didn't Adler vote for that last minute $1M appropriation add-on for Wayne Bryant's building?
Get the umbrella out Adler camp - the shoes are a droppin...
p.s. - After the tax increases in Cherry Hill and the hits Adler will take in the election, I bet he does not even carry his own home town.
Really?
Why even bother offering commentary if you're going to say something like Cherry Hill going Republican?
That's like running around trying to convince people that 2+2=5, then explaining them to how Chris Myers will solve their problems.
If you honestly seriously want Chris Myers to win, you should try not to associate your idiocy with Myers' candidacy.
Cherry Hill going Republican!
What?!?!
That's Right
Talk to your Cherry Hill neighbors these days. They are growing angrier by the day with the abuse they are put under by the Norcross Machine – high taxes, poor management, whistle-blower lawsuits, etc.
They may be slow to change due to ideological leanings, but after having less and less money in the pocket to pay bills or go on vacation, they have had enough and are ready for change.
Witness the last council race - in previous years it should have been a blowout - not so this time.
Please do me a favor and rest on your laurels and take CH for granted. Because the folks I work with that live in CH (yes Dems too) are voting their pocket book and will no longer support the Norcross/Adler tax of waste and corruption. You can count on it.
Food for Thought
Now the logical response from a Myers supporter to my rebuttal would have been, "Obviously, Cherry Hill is way to Democratic to go for Myers, but because of Myers positions on A, B, and C, it will be much closer then anyone expected." Instead in a grand, flamboyant display of absurdity, he actually stands by that Myers will win Cherry Hill.
Now, I'd like to propose that if you want to discuss the issues or discuss Myers' chances of winning Cherry Hill, you use objective verifiable information or evidence to support your claim. I've lived in Cherry Hill my whole life, attending East for High School. I can make up any stories or anecdotes I want about how my neighbors love John Adler and are eager to help him win in November.
But I won't do that because while it may be true. It is in fact unverifiable bull shit. So don't try to feed us YOUR version of unverifiable bull shit about what Cherry Hill voters think.
Here's some verifiable evidence to think about. In 2007, 8 months ago, Adler won re-election, 62-38.
Here's where this all becomes real important. Myers and evidently his supporters spout ideas like "the economy is basically strong" and "I bet he won't even carry his home town". Myers spends time on numerous press releases and press conferences attacking bloggers and arguing about what medals Myers won. That's an issue which will hardly impact the livelihood of voters in NJ-3.
John Adler on the other hand is proposing energy solutions to help lower the price of gas. Working on new Veterans benefits programs. Holding Town Halls across NJ-3 to listen to the voters of the district.
It should be a fun 95 days for you, you can continue to spout off your unverifiable bull shit and the outlandish conclusions that follow. Just know that it will come to an end.
Smiles!
Wow - your tirade makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Like I said, please put CH in the "There is no way in hell we can lose this" column. Some of the best losses in history are based on that arrogance.
Smiles!!
I LOVE IT!
I feel all warm and fuzzy inside when someone doesn't come up with a rebuttal to my argument and pretends like they've won anyway. What do they call that when someone has no reason to think they've won, but do anyway? Arrogance!
Smiling right back!
Witty
Imitation is the best form of flattery.
You seem very angry by the way. Why don't you go back to Blue Jersey where anger is cool.
Oh, and wait...did you hear that? Sounds like the shoe truck is pulling up...
Yep, CH will be solidly in your corner after all those shoes drop. Have a nice election season smiley.
Go for it
I don't mind at all when an anonymous internet commentator attacks me. It's fine, really, instead of quietly going away, keep ignoring my previous argument. I happily await your next post ignoring my previous points, making vague, ridiculous, and unsubstantiated predictions, and attacking me personally. I'm sure refusing to debate my points is persuading a lot of people to your side.
If you think
Anybody is swayed by these postings you are lost (and still angry - your postings show it)
As for your other comments about me ignoring your argument - not sure what you mean. I think Adler loses CH - you don't. I am thanking you for ignoring CH. I think that will help Myers. You don't.
Okie Dokie - not sure what else you want Smiley.
Anyway, good night sweety - Have pleasant dreams of a liberal lawyer from CH conquering Ocean County and Myers' own home county. Ta ta for now.

Wait...
Why does Chris Myers want Adler to fire a guy for writing a letter expressing his personal views?
Is there any evidence this guy isn't doing his job correctly?
Clarification
By this guy, I mean Charles Jones of the State Parole Board.
Nope
To answer Indy OC's questions, there is no evidence that Jones has been doing a bad job. In fact I read an article today which said that Jones has actually been a great addition to the parole board.
Just more proof of the total negative campaign of Chris Myers. This man will do and say anything to get elected, yet he has no proposals to get us out of Iraq and thinks all we need to do is make it look like won there, and he believes the economy is basically strong.
Chris, the voters of NJ-3 are getting tired of this politics as usual, which is exactly why they will elect John Adler in November.
Asbury Park Press Blasts Jones Appointment
And details the secret process where Adler led a secret meeting and then turned the recording machines off!
The following is from the editorial:
The details behind Jones' appointment in 2006 are disturbing. Senate Judiciary Committee members (led by Adler) questioned his qualifications and then took a break to resolve the matter. However, the recording of the meeting was not resumed. Jones then was approved by the committee and the full Senate on the same day. Senate President and then-Gov. Richard J. Codey said Jones was approved because he had "street smarts." Try getting a job in the private sector with that as your selling point; it won't happen.
This is just one of the thousands of embarrassing and disturbing issues where Adler's votes and leadership are in direct opposition with the voters in the 3rd Dist (even CH voters you dim wits!)
You posters trying to defend Jones is bizarre. Who suggested that strategy? Steve? Yeah - brilliant leader. That campaign management shake up really worked out well.
Fired?
But has Jones been doing a good job or not since he was appointed? I just don't see why he should be fired.
Why should he be fired?
Why should he be fired? First of all, in his letter he states that Sharpe is innocent of all charges and that this whole thing is a conspiracy out to get James. So blatant stupidity is the reason. But if that is not enough - which I am sure you will agree it is not because we have plenty of stupid people filling seats in positions within our state government - how about the fact that he was never qualified to hold the position in the first place? Take a look at the following Asbury Park Press article. He was never qualified to hold the position - period. Yet Adler led some secret back room deal to get this guy his $116k a year job. Good job Johnny Boy. Happy reading:
The resume of Charles Jones — the State Parole Board member who says former Newark Mayor Sharpe James is innocent of federal corruption charges for which he is to be sentenced Tuesday — reflects none of the experience state law requires to be on the parole board.
The resume shows Jones, 61, of Kenilworth, was an aide to James from 1994 through 2006, when he was appointed to the parole board under questionable circumstances. He was also a city code enforcement officer in Newark for three years, a supervisor of ticket counter and customer service representatives at Trans World Airlines for 21 years and a sergeant in the Army, from which he was honorably discharged with a disability after three years.
The State Parole Board released the resume under the state's Open Public Records Act but refused to do so until Friday — a day after Gannett New Jersey first reported that Jones wrote a letter defending James, who is also a former state senator.
The resume doesn't indicate how Jones is qualified for a $116,000 position that state statute requires "training or experience in law, sociology, criminal justice, juvenile justice or related branches of the social sciences."
"He seems to have been a total political hack appointee, to be generous," said Sen. Gerald Cardinale, R-Bergen, one of four Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee who are calling for Jones to be removed from office.
Jones hasn't responded to requests for interviews. A parole board spokesman defended Jones without explaining how his background matches the statutory requirements.
"Mr. Jones has served as a very active professional and productive State Parole Board member," spokesman Neal Buccino said. "His qualifications are evidenced by his career of more than 30 years with leadership roles in the public and private sectors as well as serving this country as a sergeant in the Army."
Asked how that fits the law's requirements, Buccino said, "That's my statement."
Jones was appointed to the State Parole Board by then-Gov. Richard J. Codey. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee questioned his qualifications, but an archived recording of the meeting ends as the committee took a break to resolve the matter. The recording doesn't resume, but the committee and then the full Senate both approved Jones's nomination that day, the last day of the 2004-05 legislative session.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman John Adler, D-Camden, didn't return multiple calls last week seeking comment. Codey has said lawmakers approved Jones because he had "street smarts."
After Jones wrote to U.S. District Judge William J. Martini, who is scheduled to sentence James on corruption charges Tuesday, Republican senators wrote to Gov. Corzine and Adler asking that they remove Jones from office.
In his letter to the judge, Jones doesn't mention his state position. He says James was unfairly prosecuted and calls him a "national role model" and innocent, which he deduced from following the trial that spanned more than 30 dates over three months.
Republicans said the letter showed contempt for law enforcement and the judicial system and that Jones is unfit to determine the fate of criminals.
"Jones' attitude is such that he doesn't think anything is a crime," Cardinale said. "The people are entitled to be protected from criminals."
Corzine rejected calls to remove Jones.
"Given his position on the parole board, sending this letter may not have been the best use of judgment, but Mr. Jones is entitled to his opinion as a private citizen and did this on his own time," Corzine spokesman Sean Darcy said.
Parole Board Performance
Why won't anyone say whether or not he's done a good job since he's been appointed? I see that Republicans think he's unqualified and that Democrats this he is sufficiently qualified. There's obviously two sides here. Republicans are probably unhappy that he wasn't a police officer or criminal attorney while Democrats are probably satisfied with his military background and 12 years of experience as a mayoral aide in one of America's most dangerous and crime-filled cities.
But at this point he already has the job, so isn't his job performance the most important issue here? It's not fair to say "good job Johnny Boy" when Codey may have appointed, and Adler confirmed, someone who turned out to be a competent and adept member of the parole board.
Can you read?
It is clear to anyone who can read that he was not qualified for the job. Seems that another former state official who was not qualified for a job other than he was sleeping with the Governor was forced to resign his position. It doesn't matter whether he is doing a good job or not. I will state for the record, based on his position as a member of the parole board and his assinine belief that James is innocent of all charges and there is a conspiracy against James, that he is doing a crappy job. The issue should be, why was he selected in the first place when it is clear that he did not have the qualifications for the position?? Why did Adler close the hearing, make a back room deal, and appoint someone who lacked even the basic job quailfications for the job? Woudl he be ok with a dentist performing open heart surgery? Hell, he has a Dr. in front of his name, why not?
abetternjnow
is kind of like Myers himself. Alllll theatre, no substance....and of course wasting his time bickering with bloggers.
Chances are abetternjnow will insist on replying to this because just like the Myers camp, has nothing better to do then point out the small stuff instead talk about issues (and by talk about the issues, I mean not use the terms "JOHN ADLER"...."DECORATED COMBAT VETERAN" and "TAX AND SPEND DEMOCRAT".....that would be an amazing feat.

Well I guess
My statement that "JOHN ADLER is a TAX AND SPEND DEMOCRAT but not a DECORATED COMBAT VETERAN" would seem kind of silly after that challenge.
Anyway, why won't Adler respond to repeated calls from the media? Evidently the people want to know why he led a secret back room discussion to get Jones hired.
Perhaps if one of his "citizen soldiers" from Blue Jersey called he might respond. Oh wait - no need to - he has one of the bloggers on staff now.
Smiles everyone - there will be free shoes over at the Adler camp once all the other shoes drop - come and get it!
Jumping in now!
Woeeeeewwwwwee I love to read the agnst by some posters! hehehe
Ok, the whole issue if I understand it is that this person is asking leanency for someone who has been rightly been convicted of betraying the public's trust and faith.
Adler is not going to be immune from doing things because he is told to by his machine. However, I do think that Myers needs to shift his focus on to the other pertinent issues of the campaign and leave this other stuff as filler when need be.
Now, Cherry Hill is going to be diffucult for any GOP, but a few years ago, Saxton did very well against Bass Levin. But OC is correct, people are not always going to go lockstep into that mindstep. We know many people in CH and they said that the trick for Myers is to see how many votes he can take from Adler in CH.
Oh and for the record, Ocean GOP has already started from what I hear to start the ball rolling for Myers. At the end of the day, Ocean is to Myers is what CH is to Adler.
Yes 95 days and counting
