Medford Mayor Chris Myers challenged his Democratic congressional opponent, State Sen. John Adler, to a debate over new affordable housing mandates today.
Myers has spent a good chunk of his campaign railing against a recently passed bill that bans regional community agreements (RCAs), where suburban towns would offload their affordable housing requirements on other towns by paying them fees.
Adler backed the reforms in the legislature.
Myers showed up yesterday to the ceremonial bill signing by Gov. Corzine in Mount Laurel to lead a Burlington County Republican contingent against it. Although Adler did not comment specifically on the legislation, the Press of Atlantic City ran a response by his campaign manager, Raiyan Syed, that called Myers “just another career politician who will support failed Bush policies that have damaged our economy and hurt our middle class.”
“Reading your non-response, it became clear why you didn’t even have the courage to show up yesterday and defend your vote—and that’s because you can’t defend it. Just like you can’t defend voting to increase taxes 43 times since 2002, killing our state’s economy and making it unaffordable to live, work or retire here,” said Myers in a press release. “Instead, you’d rather run and hide, and hold highly orchestrated town hall meetings where you never face tough questions about your failed record in Trenton.”
Myers said he wanted to debate in Mount Laurel “right now. No delay.”
A spokesman for Adler could not be reached for comment.

Whats he running for?
Is Chris Myers running for the state legislature or Congress? Who the hell knows? What I know is this: all Myers talks about is state issues, hey Chris why don't you talk about the issues that matter FEDERALLY to this district, because hey newsflash that's what your running for! You can huff and puff but you can't blow the house down Mr. Mayor.
But I guess you have to focus on these state issues because you have no plan for healthcare, and no plan to get our troops out of Iraq. But hey as long as "it looks like we won" it doesn't matter right?
And why is Myers running such a negative campaign? Every single press release, every single news article Chris Myers is on the attack. Why not be positive? This is exactly the thing that the voters are rejecting this year. I even noticed a whole section on the Myers website today bashing John Adler! This kind of BS is exactly why Chris Myers is going to lose this year in the 3rd district.
Ditto
I live in the district, signed up to work for Myers, went to a rally (which he didn't attend), worked the polls for him on election day ... and have not heard from the campaign since.
Myers' qualifications make him head and shoulders above Adler for a seat in Congress, but debating state issues is irrelevant, and a real turn off. Bad mouthing Jack Kelly was a turnoff, too. Ed Forsythe and Jim Saxton got elected over and over because they were regular guys, and people genuinely liked them. That's what we want in a Congressman, or any politician for that matter.
Mr. Know-it-all
Hey Mr. Know-It-All - it is a federal issue. The Supreme Court decided the issue long ago - the "Mount Laurel decision" which among other things mandated that localities provide adequate (numbers) public housing. It is a state-federal issue as the federal government has the ability to modify and change housing guidelines which the state would then have to follow. So before you open your trap again, get the facts straight. And Adler's record as a career politician is fair game. If he or you cannot back it up, then that is his or your problem. It goes to the larger point - Adler helped ruin NJ. now he wants us to send him to DC to the same thing? And to Mr. Monk, please rmember that it was Jack Kelly who threw the first stone less than a month after he declared he would not go negative. It isn't Chris' fault that Jack's shady record was an easy target. Jack should have remembered that he lives in a glass house.
If by Supreme Court...
...you mean NJ STATE Supreme Court, yes.....the new COAH regulations are a long needed overhaul in our state's affordable housing regulations and when Adler was in the Senate making the necessary regulations, Myers was doing nothing as Mayor of Medford.
So before you open YOUR trap again, understand how badly the state needed to review and update it's regulations on affordable housing.
Get over it Myers
Chris Myers needs a new plan of attack. This is not a lie...every single piece of literature, press release or link on his website include negative attacks on Adler. His campaign is extremely negative, and apparently that is all he has. You say Adler "ruined" NJ...highly dubious. Does banning smoking in public places "ruin NJ?" No, and Adler sponsored that Bill. And RCAs are horrible because they concentrate poverty in our urban areas. If Myers stands for them then he stands for continued poverty. Myers doesnt seem to think outside of the State, and unfortunately United States Congress requires that you do.
Myers: Solutionless and Negative
There's reason that Myers is running around like a chicken with his head cut off in trying to get attention from the media, as well as going negative on Adler. Of course, for the latter, he wants to distance himself from the failed policies of the Bush administration and only focus on state issues. For the former, he knows that he faces a 9-1 fundraising deficit and that his campaign is sputtering, to put it mildly But his faux indignation towards Adler over affordable housing reveals Myers to be out-of-touch and non-constructive in solving one of New Jersey's worst problems: the lack of affordable housing in the state.
But Thurman Hart over at NJ Voices has a much better rebuttal of Myers' anti-affordable housing argument than I could make, with research into Medford's affordable housing and a strong antidote to Myers' disingenuous argument that affordable housing increases property taxes. One wonders whether fearmongering and negativity are the only cards in Myers' deck.

Here We Go Again!
I guess the dems will never learn; I guess the continual "Bush v Adler and Bush v Dems will continue until November.
I am glad that the only solution that Adler and all have is Myers supporting Bush polices, Myers supporting Bush this and that?
Remember Rich Dennison??
Since when is Myers a career politican? How many years has Myers LIKE ADLER spent in Trenton signing off on legislation that has hiked our taxes and supported whatever Corzine wants?
A Fiction of Reagan's Imagination
If the best that Myers, et. al. can do is drag out the fictional Cadillac driving welfare queen for one more circle around the track then the Republicans are in for a rude awakening.
Anyone wonder why Saxton is retiring? Could it be because his former campaign aid wrote a book titled "HOW TO STEAL AN ELECTION" Or did that not make the Republican reading list?
the OC
You know, there is a NJ State Supreme Court, too, genius.
Corzines housing for ex cons wont work
Housing for ex cons and illegals wont fly in the US Supreme court . Its time to challenge Mt Laurel 1 and 2. Its time to call for affordable taxation for the middle class now.
thank you
As I have said before and will say again, I am man enough to admit when I make a mistake - thank you Adam. I made a mistake when claiming it was a USSC decision when it was a NJSC decision. However, before you start casting stones Formerly, make sure you are the Virgin Mary and have no sins. Affordable housing continues to be an issue that the federal government clearly is involved in - no one can claim otherwise. So it is an issue - one of many - that can be brought up when debating the needs of the 3rd District. Moreover, it continues the pattern of John Adler pricing out the average person from staying and retiring in NJ.
Negative?
Wanting to debate a subject is negative? I guess Andrews is the most negative candidate in history then
Fact of the matter is, you defenders of Adler REALLLLY hope Myers stops pointing out Adler's Trenton record. The largest unfunded mandate NJ has ever seen and Adler was the deciding vote! Yep, that should get him elected - in the 1st District - not the 3rd. What an idiot!
Tell you what, why don't you lead by example and not mention Medford for the next few months. Then maybe Myers will stop talking about Trenton - pinky swear!
